After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of Prince Edward VII's (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. Based on the true story of King George VI, The king's speech follows the Royal Monarch's quest to find his voice.

Absolutely splendid performances from Geoffrey Rush (does he give any other kind?) and Colin Firth. A wonderful film that made me feel good from the top of my head to my toes.

I had put off seeing this because of all of they hype surrouding it and to be honest I had no clue what it was about (generally not into 'historical' things). I was pleasantly surprised. Was a well acted, beautiful moving that flowed along quite nicely. Glad I finally watched it - well worth a view.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Colin Firth as Prince Bertie is likeable enough for you not to be put off by his rudeness and Geoffrey Rush plays his part perfectly s the irreverant Australian. The relationship is complex and you get a real sense of the depth of it without any triteness. I can see why it was a biggie on the awards lists. A good historical piece and an excellent way to spend a couple of hours engrossed in this story.

Superb film, great acting from the 3 main characters and a truly fascinating story about royalty and the "upper class" in Britain. Geoffrey Rush proves yet again how versatile an actor he is. One of my favourites.

Perhaps inevitably, I came at this with high-ish expectations (given its Oscar win), only to be confronted with the kind of slick sentimental entertainment that wins these kinds of awards. Admittedly well acted by Colin Firth (king) and Geoffrey Rush (speech therapist), the string section was slathered on too thickly and the plot far too schematic (initial success, rejection, reconciliation, final success) for my tastes. Still, the British history lesson running astride the personal drama was interesting.

I'm not a big fan of the Royals, but still enjoyed this movie. The extras on the Blu-Ray were really good to check out after watching this one.

A good reconstruction of the relationship between Lionel and King George VI (if not entirely historically accurate); great acting; it makes you wonder what the world would have been like if the King had not had his speech impediment helped by this expatriate Aussie speech therapist!

It was all it was wrapped up to be ... great acting, great story, great scenes/costumes etc. Really wonderful. I really liked the historical aspects of the monarchy and the infamous Mrs Wallace as well. Geoffrey Rush was as usual fantastic, but Colin Firth - a simply wonderful performance.

A great tale and great performances from all the extraordinarily talented cast. Although slight changes were made from the actual events, it was a ripping rendition of a truth within our time. Bravo.
