With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. Based on the true story of King George VI, The king's speech follows the Royal Monarch's quest to find his voice.

You too can make an Academy Award contender! All you need are these ten ingredients: 1) An inspirational true story, 2) a character with a pronounced disability, 3) Colin Firth in a leading role, 4) Geoffrey Rush in a supporting role, 5) canted camera angles, 6) a score by Alexandre Desplat, 7) Helena Bonham Carter (provided it’s a period piece), 8) a five-minute appearance from Guy Pearce and, most importantly, 9) the support of producers Bob and 10) Harvey Weinstein. Tom Hooper’s The King Speech – which serendipitously features all ten of these elements - is practically the definition of Oscar bait. It's a veritable trifle of sumptuous delights for members of the Academy to nosh on. The King’s Speech is Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory to the voters’ Augustus Gloop.

But fear not. The King Speech artfully avoids cliché, schmaltz and smugness (the hallmark of too many Oscar nominated films) to be a rather wonderful experience. It’s a lovely, heartfelt film performed impeccably by a charming cast. Firth stars as the stammering Duke of York (Bertie to his friends), who employs Aussie speech therapist Lionel Logue (Rush) to help him overcome his stutter as he prepares to take the throne and become King George VI. Do not be put off by the seemingly stuffy subject matter. It’s true that the list of ingredients for a "sexy" movie (Angelina Jolie, David Caruso, a screenplay by Joe Eszterhas) rarely correspond with those of a "good" movie, but The King’s Speech is still wildly entertaining, even if it is unfortunately lacking in swimming pool-based sex scenes. (That was a weird segue; let’s see if we can’t get back on track.)

History buffs will no doubt already be well versed in the tale of the Duke of York’s ascension in the 1930s. Proud Bertie has grown up in the intimidating shadow of his father King George V (an imposing Michael Gambon) and his older brother David (Guy Pearce). As a result, he’s developed something of a speech impediment. It’s a nasty inconvenience, and emblematic of his inability to consider himself a man with potential. Loving wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) seeks out amateur Australian actor Logue (who received his training in the “enthusiastic” theatre town of Perth) to help her stubborn hubby overcome his obstacle. So begins an unlikely friendship that would inadvertently shape modern history.

Tom Hooper – who helmed a similarly affecting movie about modern kings and unlikely friendships, The Damned United – brings a unique visual approach here. He and cinematographer Danny Cohen position their camera in a number of interesting ways. I’m not sure it really contributes to the meaning behind the film, but it separates it from more “classical” films of this ilk. And gosh, it is indeed pretty. Not to be outshone by tilt shots and astounding period detail are the film’s true stars, Firth and Rush, as the impetuous Bertie and the disarming Lionel respectively. Firth - following on from his unforgettable performance in the otherwise-forgettable A Single Man - fills his Duke of York with such pain and misguided guilt. We too feel the incredible weight of his calling, and his evolution into King George VI is gripping. Rush meanwhile, playing a failed actor with an affinity for articulation, masterfully avoids eating the scenery; he has fun with his character yet still imbues him with heart and soul.

It was revealed in the last decade that King George VI approved Hitler’s governmental “inspection” of unauthorized Jews emigrating out of Germany. This scandal is overlooked by Hooper and screenwriter David Seidler. I understand its exclusion from the film; The King’s Speech would hardly be a feel-good flick if we were asked to champion a man who first turned a blind eye to some of the atrocities being undertaken in Germany before plunging his nation into war. But perhaps if Bertie – already a rich character – had been portrayed warts and all, the audience would have a little bit more to chew on, a little more to process than that which we are given here. Instead of leaving the cinema with a smile – which we do – we could have left conflicted; we could have argued about the film on the drive home, or weeks later. If Hooper were truly interested in giving us a different type of period piece, perhaps he should have considered confronting the audience with some harsh truths, rather than oblique camera angles. Still, this is just the hypothetical difference between a very good film and a brilliant one. Just so there’s no confusion, let me speak plainly: The King’s Speech is a very good film.

4/5

Absolutely brilliant film. Warm, funny and beautifully performed, even if you know nothing about the history behind it you'll love this movie. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I loved this movie. Colin Firth & Geoffry Rush are excellent. I think it was really interesting to see the relationship between an ordinary man and a man who would become King. Public speaking is a tough thing to do even without a stammer and I reckon with Lionel's help Bertie dd a great job. Recommend this movie highly.

One of the best movies I've seen in ages. How wonderfully inspiring and of course brilliant acting by all the cast. Really good story. I really felt for the poor man. Good on him for working so hard to overcome his handicap to what he had to do.

I really did enjoy this movie, mostly because of the charactor portrayal and the very fine acting throughout. Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth were fantastic, but for me Helena Bonham Carter was a class act.

A very good movie telling an interesting slice of history. The input from Mark Logue, Lionel's grandson, was very illuminating and put an extra interest into the story and how well it was, or was not, told. Wonderful characters portrayed by brilliant actors. Not to be missed, this movie.

Having read the book first and then seeing the movie this came as quite a disappointment. The screen writers or whomever entirely changed the character played by Geoffrey Rush, which would have been alright if the character in question was a minor one, but he wasn't. The tone of the book and that of the movie were different for me. Performances were o.k .but I don't understand why this received all the high-praise it did. O.K. but that's about it.

Highly reconmend this movie - The Kings Speech, to everybody on the face of this earth. A real history lesson, for the youngen and being interested and a closest-follower, of the Queen and a selected few of the royals, just made our movie experience, more memoriable and even saw a few places, which family had toured in the mid 1990's. Lovely scenery, excellent acting and great characters too. Might have to rent this yet again, when family visit us from the United Kingdom. Thanks Again..

When I saw this at the cinema a couple of years ago, I remember saying to my companion that I could easily line up for another session and sit through this film again. It was THAT good. Have now just watched it again - and enjoyed it every bit as much. Incredible performances from Firth, Rush and Bonham Carter. Alternately witty, intelligent and moving dialogue. Didn't know much about the royals of that period, other than the infamous abdication of Edward, so this was a fascinating story. Absolutely superb.

Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are both at their brialliant best and the support cast including Guy Pearce and Helena Bonham Carter shone also. Also loved the poetry of the scene with 'Mr Darcy' Firth meeting 'Lizzy' Jennifer Ehle. Hilarious.

I loved how Rush and Firth were able to build the growing character relationship - the realities of how each felt in the situation the world has placed them in, the unexpected Kingship in war with his personal struggles and his unlikely support in the unusual (perhaps typically Australian) speech therapist. Carter's performance also realistic in how the Queen mother would have been no doubt in the same circumstances. Overall enthralling perspective of this era in history.

The premise for the film sounded quite boring, but while watching the film, I found the character study to be very good and felt very involved with both of the main characters because of it. I felt very nervous for both the new king and his speech therapist, and enjoyed the journey of their friendship.

Geoffrey Rush, Colin Friels, what else would you expect. Superb acting with a historic storyline, really worth a look if you like these guys as they really live the personality of the 'life', of who they portray, they are the epitome of real Australian professional dramatic artists.

Lives up to the hype. It mixes reality with possibility. As a movie about friendship it ticks all the boxes (partners and strangers alike). As an insight into the pressures and responsibilites of being royal it gives an interesting perspective. Thecostuming and set detail adds extra depth to the credibility.

This is one of those movies that even with viewers recimmendations, I had pre-conceived ideas that it would be high brow and stodgy. How wrong could I have been! I watched it twice in the same day. I couldn't get over the brilliant acting, the love and support between the King and his wife. I will definitely add this to my collection once the prices drop a bit. Cann't wait to see it again.

I was dubious about all the hype relating to the release of this film, hence why I didn't go to the cinema. But how brilliant are the performances of Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth. There are always such wonderful stories in history that translate to screen so beautifully. I am sure the actors were equally inspired when they read the script. I was totally absorbed from start to finish.

thumbs up for this one. Colin Firth has put in another solid performance as well as Helen Bohem- Carter, a unusually subdued role for her. It wasn't Geoff Rushs best performance but still close to the top. The story line was light and didn't get to involved in any cloke and daggar theatrics. A professional relationship between to men from different walks of life.

I know this movie won many awards but I found it a little boring. Nothing really exciting happens. Maybe it was boring because I didn't know much about the history of the royal family? I eventually worked out how the characters are related to the current day royal family. I've never seen Helena Bonham Carter in such a serious role, I've always seen her portray weird, wacky characters. Hard to imagine her as the Queen. Maybe I need to watch it a second or third time to appreciate the movie more?

I found this movie interesting; in so far as to take a glimpse back in time to see what was unfolding in that time period. It was a movie that I'm glad I didn't pay big bucks to see in the cinemas, although the acting was brilliant. The thing that I found amusing, as a massive Pride and Prejudice fan, was seeing Darcy and Elizabeth (Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle) reunited in this movie, for a fleeting minute, as the King and Myrtle Logue. Jennifer did a great Aussie accent!!

Better than I expected. I thought it would be somewhat turgid, but the historical storyline around Edward's abdication in the uncertain pre-WWII period and fine acting by the leads kept me entralled. Rush is brilliant as usual. Some of the acsents are a bit sus for the period though, even Rush's does not really reflect the true 1930's Australian and as for the Royal's, well ..... Head's up voice coaches!

Pleasantly surprised. I usually don't enjoy long-winded drama style movies, which this appeared to be at a glance - but this had some genuinely funny moments and a gentle momentum to the story. Geoffrey Rush's character is adorable, even though his wife seems a nutter (unless Jennifer Ehle is on drugs or something). His character really makes the film. "Bertie" is not particularly likable and yet inspires sympathy, which is probably exactly true to life - best acting to date from Colin Firth, brilliantly done. His wife is not likable at all, which may also be true to life!! Apart from the poor representation of "David" (doesn't address any of the real issues for his abdication, only illogically tries to makes him out as some stupid sap who can't get over his latest squeeze), this was a great story and very enjoyable. Definitely worth the watch!!

1st class acting, but the movie absolutely BORED me to sleep. Yes, it's based on history and yes, there are some good actors, but this doesn't change the fact that the screenplay was dull, unengaging and predictable. Seriously don't know what the whole fuss is about! If you suffer from insomnia, then this movie is definitely the remedy. WAKE UP people, do you seriously think this is the epitome of a brilliant historic film?? And yes, ironically I will probably be the one labelled as "ignorant"

As painful to watch as it must've been excruciating for "Bertie": stammering and freezing mid-speech as so well portrayed by Colin Firth. While the background is well-known to anyone with at least a passing interest in history - the abdication and the coming of war - the central story of the movie is a revelation for those of us born after the king's passing. Even if one doesn't care in the least about the Royal Family, at a human level the story is still fascinating and engrossing.

Intelligently and sensitively made movie. AS a history buff I loved it even if it didn't show Bertie with warts and all. Maybe a documentary would be the place for that. Geoffrey Rush was perfect. However, I am often slightly disappointed with historical films when the characters barely resemble the characters they portray....not even a little. Colin firth is a good actor and played the part brilliantly but he does not look anything like the very gently, slightly built Bertie and this spoils it for me. And please, please, please would someone teach modern actors to speak like the aristocracy when they are playing aristocrats. Angelina Jolie sounds like a middle-class house- wife rather than the Queen mum....and as for Guy Pearce's accent......!!!!

Brilliant movie both main actors portray their characters to perfection, this movie deserves all the awards it has won and more. I fully intend to purchase a copy for my home DVD collection and would recommend it highly, also believe it to be historically correct. It was lovely to have watched this movie over the weekend of the Royal Wedding of Kate

Truly lives up to the hype. This intelligent film combines perfect blend of humor, inspiration and severity of the struggles in one mans life. Rush and Firth are at their finest. A must watch for all.

This is definitely a family movie [apart from mild coarse language] Watch Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth cast a magical on screen spell over the audience as you watch with the drama of a murder mystery mixed with the emotion of real life and spirit. An experience above all else. You gotta see this movie! My rating is 6 out of five!

The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it. Colin Firth is magnificent. If anyone was born to play this role then Firth is the man. The best movie of 2011

May not win the oscar but if my vote counted it would..Colin Firth makes a Perfect Bertie, Rush is fabulous as the vocal coach the two have a bond on screen that shines through and I think Helena gives her best performance as Liz!...Love it on the big screen bring on the BLUE RAY...and the oscar goes to :The Kings Speach....also loved the Kids are alright so what does it matter what the academy vote

At last! An intelligent and uplifting movie with inspired acting. Colin Firth deserves all the awards - his King George is a sensitive, tortured soul who has a powerful dedication to duty and a warm love for his wife and daughters. Geoffrey Rush is the astute, caring and determined therapist who wins the King's trust and friendship. Helena Bonham Carter is also excellent as the charming, confident but concerned and loving Queen. I shed a tear when George realised that he had found his first true friend in Lionel.
