When Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz), a British-born dealer in regional, “outsider” art, travels from Chicago to North Carolina to pursue a local painter for her gallery, she and her brand-new husband George (Alessandro Nivola) extend the trip to include an introduction to his family. Madeleine relies almost entirely on her sister-in-law, Ashley (Amy Adams) to help navigate family dinners, church meetings and Ashley’s baby shower, all while desperately trying to close the deal on the artist. Tensions mount when Ashley goes into labour and each family member’s priorities, Madeleine’s included, are confronted.

This is a very good film that rewards repeated viewings. There is a lot going on under the surface in this story about George (Alessandro Nivola) a successful young man who takes his adoring and equally successful wife Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) back to his parents home in small town America. Amy Adams is wonderful as Ashley the not too bright girl with a heart of gold who is the heavily pregnant wife of George's younger brother Johnny (Ben McKenzie). Johnny in stark contrast to George works in a lowly job at a local business where he packs goods. Ashley and Johnny live with George and Johnny's parents. It soon seems likely that Ashley and George have history together and that the effects of decisions that were made in the past are still having repercussions in the family. Great performances, great film.

Pointless and boring. Everyone in this sad family and their neighbourhood are people to run a mile from rather than spend any time with.

Family story of two brothers each with very different tastes in the choice of girlfriends and wives. Entertaining to see how the story unfolds.

Sorry, I guess this was supposed to provide some serious insights into something, but Amy Adams was the only thing that got this movie any stars at all.

i enjoyed this movie even though is somewhat different. Really liked the main female characters and illusion of happy families doing everything right but being so unfulfilled and distant from each other....good reminder for us all to be real and open and to try and drop the barriers by thinking others are different from us.....let go of fear

Amy Adams was great, but what an annoying character! Couldn't get into this at all - couldn't see the point to the movie.

Boring, didn't find any comedy in it. The most interesting character was the brother Johnny.

This film is worth seeing for the performance of Amy Adams and I found this movie thought provoking and watched it twice. The most pivotal scene to me was George singing the hymn at the church social, a hymn about redemption of sinners and 'coming home'. What had he done, was he the father of Ashley's baby and not Johnnie? What did Eugene tell Madelaine? What was the relevance of the missing screwdriver? So many questions unanswered!

Strange movie that fails to adequately explore the dark undercurrents which are hinted at. In the end you feel as though there is another story which has not been told. Still the performances are very good and it avoids the eccentric but lovable relations predictability of most movies of this type.

Amy Adams deserved her Academy nomination. I wanted to like this more than I did. Strong accents cloud the clarity. A quirky movie that, understandably, could annoy some. I liked it, I didn't love it.

Intriguing Art-house movie. I was going to rate it 2 stars but watched it the next morning & changed my opinion. Study of a families emotions in 'religious down south'. A family that lacks communication skills, and is dominated by a 'Mother's love' meets a genuine sophisticated loving NEW in law. An insecure, arrogant immature, son married to a sweet loving 'airhead' is jealous of the 'adorded' older brother. Also a study of how each person deals with grief. Some deleted scenes should have been left in ?? Ps Glad I live in australia!!!

I did watch the whole film, only because I wanted to know how it ended but it was absolute torture, I found the characters annoying, frustrating and for the most part, stupid with the exception of the "lead" couple.

if you like quirky offbeat movies it might be for you. The strong Southern accents might annoy some people though (the movie is set in North Carolina). It just didn't do it for me.

Disappointing. I suppose its an OK story showing how people's values differ and that you just don't give up because of that, but I found it hard to really care. Amy Adams was a delight but I think her performance was all the more stand out for me because I read how she felt she couldn't pull it off all the time she was shooting it - worked to her advantage I would say.
