This movie retains all the fascination from its make in 1975. There's a freshness in the direction that I think is lacking in contemporary times - directors now focusing on making film in such serious a manner and thus showcasing their 'cool', making for predictable movie contrivance, and that includes Spielberg these days. Anyway, there's a great mix in Jaws: along with the horror of the rogue shark and the drama, there's wit and humour. Scheider is brilliant in his characterisation as Amity's chief of police; his face strained with fear but determined to see the island's people saved. And the film is interesting to see as a view back into the 70s.
Just watched this again after many years and was surprised how well this holds up. The special effects are dated but it is still a great movie to watch.
My 10 yr old son loves scary movies and requested this. However, he found Jaws a bit TOO scary and too gruesome! He rated it 3/5. My 12 yr old son rated it 4/5.
Believe it or not, this is the first time I have seen Jaws. It's showing its age, but is a masterpiece never the less.
The second half of the movie is more boring than exciting, being too far-fetched, unrealistic and at times hard to follow. The first half is a better story and infuriating on account of the small-town politics (or indeed politics anywhere) being played out. The long 'Making Of' feature on the DVD is worthwhile, looking back on the film 25 years later. Some of those involved - like Steven Spielberg - aged better than others.
excellant movies to watch...
always a good movie and always will be . jaws hes out there.
Classic, son loved it. A oldie but a goodie...
Despite the passing of years since its release Jaws still manages to grip your attention and scare. I like the way many of these 70's movies created a real sense of character, family and community as a background to the unfolding events. In this way it makes you feel the threat to your personal securiry even more.
What can I say that hasn't been said about this timeless classic ?
If you've seen it before see it again and if you haven't hire it now !
A great movie that kept generations of people out of the water and into the cinema !
Highly recommend. Enjoy !!!!!!
The documentry at the end of the movie is fascinating and great viewing.
I THINK ALL OF YOUR MOVIES ARE JUST FANTASTIC ALOT EASY THJAN GOING TO THE VIDEO SHOP
Classic Film. Spielburg dazzles and will dazzle audiences for many years to come. A fantastic Book to a fantastic movie. Best Shark Movie for many years.
Quite simply the greatest movie ever made.
I was a kid when I first saw this movie and it has the ability to fill your soul with terror. The likeable and colourful characters and the chemistry between them make for a great flik! A true classic that really put Spielberg on the map.
Watching early Spielberg is like watching good Hitchcock.
Bit genius, really.
Took me 25 years to see it. A classic.
Okay this movie will keep you out the water for weeks. It may be old now but it has lost none of its class. Anyone who hasnt seen this movie should. Absolute classic shark movie.
Made me afraid to get in the water
The original and the best and surprisingly still worth watching. It no longer possesses the fear factor that kept me on the shoreline for an entire summer but it holds up well as a classic of its genre. Can you believe there are people that never saw Jaws?
Unlike Joester the toaster I found Jaws a little too predictable. Admittedly the first time I saw Jaws was when I was a teenager but it certainly didn't keep me out of the water for a whole summer. What is that about???
After seeing it again recently it is nothing more than your little ol' shark meets human in water flick where you know the result is never going to be great. The shark was just too mechanical looking. Anyway it won't stop me from renting Jaws 2 & 3 just for the appeal of Roy Schneider.
That's Roy Scheider not Schneider ... good one Bad Ass.
