Director: Clint Eastwood
Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Ed Westwick, Judi Dench, Jessica Hecht, Gunner Wright, Josh Hamilton, Jeffrey Donovan, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Lucas, Damon Herriman, Lea Thompson

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years. Hoover was feared, admired, reviled and revered, a man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted prize. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.

Clint Eastwood directs an all-star cast including Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer and Judi Dench as Hoover’s overprotective mother.

Although his standing as one of cinema's great icons will never be challenged, Clint Eastwood has surely evolved into one of the drabbest, stagiest, and most emotionally disconnected directors in Hollywood. Like Hereafter before it, J. Edgar is cast in a pall of greys and off-greys, and populated exclusively by characters who exist only when there is a camera trained upon them. The notoriously fast-working filmmaker - Eastwood favours only one or two takes - strands his talented cast in bad makeup, worse accents, and with clumsy dialogue courtesy of Milk scribe Dustin Lance Black. Throughout it all is his plinkly piano score, which isn't so much a signature of his craftsmanship these days as it is a harbinger of stilted line readings and telemovie-esque melodrama. Pretty though. The only thing in the film that is.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI, from his thirties up until his death at age 77. During his 40-odd year tenure, Hoover established the Bureau as a force to be reckoned with, thanks to his insistence on the preservation of crime scenes, the scientific analysis of evidence, and the then totally-cuckoo concept of cataloguing fingerprints. When we first meet him at a septuagenarian, he's dictating his life story to a young agent (Ed Westwick - Chuck Bass!) for an upcoming autobiography. He's also caked in old age makeup that recalls Biff Tannen in Back to the Future 2 (in fact, as the decades pass and the wrinkles increase exponentially, the entire supporting cast begins to resemble Biff; even Naomi Watts).

Hoover, his loyal assistant Helen Gandy (Watts, who becomes a nonentity in the story mere moments after her introduction) and associate director Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer, we hoped for a better follow-up to The Social Network than this), make their mark while investigating the 'Crime of the Century': the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby. Over the years, as part of his unending pursuit of public adulation and unparalleled power, Hoover wades into murky waters and digs for dirt on Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, and John F. Kennedy. These inquiries take a backseat in Eastwood and Black's tale, however, to Hoover's clandestine romantic relationship with Tolson, and how the expectations of his cruel, determined mother (Judi Dench) came to distort his perception of right and wrong.

If the above reads less like a concise synopsis of a film's plot and more like a general synopsis of Hoover's life, that's because the film doesn't really have a narrative to hang its fedora on. J. Edgar is a compression of events, both real and imagined, expressed with no rhyme or reason across a wildly oscillating timeline. We jump back and forth - no, you never get used to seeing DiCaprio and especially Hammer wearing their bizarre, old-man skin suits - and wind up drowning in a sea of extraneous characters and listless conflict. Though Black's Milk had an almost identical framing device - our eponymous hero recalls his life story for the public record - that film had verve, wit, and vibrancy (and shape). Perhaps a funereal tone is best suited to Hoover's tale, but that self-seriousness certainly doesn't do all the silly dialogue any favours.

All intriguing elements of Hoover's life - including, but not limited to, his secret relationship with Tolson, the way in which his obsessions helped to define American paranoia for the next century (and beyond), and his long-rumoured predilection for wearing women's clothes - are given fleeting, cursory nods. As such, we're only privy to a glimpse of the real man (the one sequence that examines the cross-dressing is perhaps the only sensitive and subtle moment in the entire piece). DiCaprio and Hammer work hard, but under Eastwood's half-hearted direction they merely seem like teenagers - wearing their father's suits, and with talcum powder salt-and-peppering their hair - out of their depth on a high school stage. During a pivotal fight between the two, Eastwood forgives a shot in which the camera is bumped. For a film about a persnickety detective, this thing feels very rushed.

Don't know why a movie with such fantastic actors and director should be so boring - but it was!

Great movie. Leonardo Di Caprio does a fine job on JE and the story is pretty well history with a little licence. Judy Dench plays mum well.

A relentless presentation of the man showing both his enormous achievements in crime detection being overshadowed by his human frailty. The ending says it all.

Excellent performance by DiCaprio. Unfortunately, film length couldn't fit in all of Hoovers actions, but good coverage.

I thought it was an interesting movie but definitely not a great one. Knowing more about the man and that whole history would certainly mean you would get more out of it.

A crazy man made to look a bit normal by a American Patriot. Hoover was more insane than Stalin .The truth would have been better than this load of fiction.

Perhaps if I knew more about American History prior to watching this movie I might have been able to enjoy it. I found there were lots of unexplained references that would make sense to other people, I confess I knew very little about Hoover before watching this movie. As other reviews have said it's quite dark, we adjusted the tv colour and brightness just to be able to engross ourselves in the story rather than struggling to adjust with each new scene. The makeup of Jolson was terrible, and his movement as an elderly man seemed awkward and unconvincing. In the end the story was good, but overall a disappointment.

DiCaprio is a very good actor....but I agree with Zel...he played the role like he played Hughes in the Aviator. Eastwood has made some good movies but this one was just okay. A bit slow and the make up was not good. Not a happy story but it's not suppose to be.

Really slow and you really need to pay attention to get into it. But the main thing I found hard is the muted colour throughout the movie, it makes it really visually boring too. And Leonardo just reminded me of when he played Howard Hughes in Aviator.

The life and times of J Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI for 48 years. A film that tries to get under the skin of Hoover but ends up being neither fish nor fowl. Most of what we already know about Hoover is up on the screen, including speculation about his sexuality, but the whole thing is a bit tired. Di Caprio is not particularly convincing or even shares a likeness to Hoover, and the old age makeup of his partner, Tolson, is awful.

The biopic must be harder to do well than other films -- there are so many clunkers out there (Nixon, Hoffa, I'm sure there are others). They tend to run long and rely on either mimicry or the wilful ignoring of what a person was really like -- these are all areas of peril. In this case, Leonardo is just too Leonardo (I'm saturated with him) -- I have no memory of what Hoover was really like -- and the film is too long. Eastwood tries to play around, weaving past and present together (OK, long ago past and less long ago past), sometimes with too clever editing, and this feels heavy handed. Whereas the story itself should be interesting (those files!), Hoover comes across as an unsavoury character, not a flawed person for whom we can have some sympathy. One has to wonder why Clyde Tolson, Hoover's ostensible romantic partner, would stay with such a misguided lout.

Not brilliant. Leonardo Di C played a good lead but J Edgar as a character is horendously boring. The story of his rise and manipulation of power makes it worthwhile watching. Not fun but interesting.

‘J Edgar’ concentrates on the private life of J Edgar Hoover (di Caprio) and the influence that his mother (Judy Dench) has over him and his relationship with his confidant and lover played superbly played by Armie Hammer. I enjoyed the film, never having been a fan of Hoover nor his politics, but it was sensitively directed and well written avoiding clichés and stereotype.

Leo de Cap is a great actor and I thoroughly believed his performance as Hoover. Interesting slice of FBI / USA history . Photographically dark.....might as well have been shot in B&W . Only watch if you're interested in the bio of the man

Vaguely interesting for the history, but I didn't feel anything for the characters. All the performances were good (although Tolson's makeup was such a distraction). Story telling via narration was not a good choice.

Good movie, with great acting by Leonardo DiCaprio and good supporting cast. I was reminded of the old saying: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilence" and J. Edgar Hoover put that into his way of life and of running the FBI. The movie is very dark - by that I mean, almost every scene is shot in a dark setting, although I have no idea why? Worth seeing. Recommended for the acting.

Thought this was brilliant!! Quite slow to begin with tho, almost turned it off, but after about 20mins, it gets good & only improves as the movie progresses. Thought DiCaprio was brilliant in this role. Great insight into Hoover's personal life without debasing him too much. Eastwood has hit the nail on the head once again with his directing. Just a shame the film was very dark all the time, it made it quite annoying.

A good portrayal of the man who had the mud on everyone while keeping his own secret life, well secret. And to think these are the type of people that hold true power.

NOT RECOMMENDED. I agree with Simon Miraudo's review so no need to go into detail. screenplay, direction & make-up poor more suit as a tele- movie. The actors tried hard but had poor tools to work with. You do see a portrayal of an evil, dishonest, egotistical man that held his country to ransom to support his disjointed perception of what is right and wrong. Mind you was not all bad as he did improve the reliance on forensic evident. The story should have been much better, you certainly see how power corrupts and the growth of paranoia in the FBI......... actually my wife didn't she went to bed 10 minutes into the movie.

Not being a fan of Clint Eastwood as a director, I wasn't expecting much... And I was right. I was amazed by how he managed to make J.Edgar Hoover's life so boring when there was so much to tell. On the bright side, Leonardo Dicaprio is amazing as usual (even though the makeup makes him look ridiculous), had he not been in the movie, I would probably have stopped watching it.

This is 'ok', the film quality harkens back to a 50s taped movie – even if its effective. The story is good, but as a movie I compare it to the Aviator where Leo conjures another prominent American - the Aviator was better. I wanted to rate this higher because Clint directed and it was good as a historical piece and as a political piece but not too much else. 2.5/5

It's very rare that I struggle to get through a film. But this one I did. Not convinced Leo was the best candidate to play Hoover. I feel a bit like I wasted my time watching this unfortunately, and I was really keen to learn the history! Maybe it's just not my cup of tea.....

Interesting enough as a piece of history. But what's happening most of time is very hard to see, the movie is so dark - at least on the DVD. The framing of a life story being dictated as an autobiography makes sense, but confusingly jumping in and out of different decades is unhelpful in trying to follow the story. For Clint Eastwood as director, this is a surprisingly poor effort.

A film that doubtless had a multi-million dollar budget and yet somehow managed to emerge with a cheap telemovie-of-the-week feel about it. The actors aren't at fault - but fingers could certainly be pointed at the screenplay, the makeup ( yup, it's bad) and the director. Eastwood has come a long way since the stunning Mystic River - it's just unfortunate that the journey has been progressively downhill.

I found this movie to be riveting from beginning to end. I know some people have said the makeup jobs were poor and I would have to agree somewhat but the storyline makes you forget that and I think Clint Eastwood has a way of capturing you into the feel of the movie. I didn't expect to cry but I did and I think Clint always shows things in a way that captures your emotions. I really did enjoy this film.
