It's A Wonderful Life

It’s the go-to film of Christmas, and for good reason. Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life is based on a short story by Philip Van Doren Stern, and centres on a not so-Christmassy catalyst: George Bailey’s (James Stewart) contemplation of suicide. Yes, nothing says Christmas like a desperate man on the brink of suicide. However, it is this act that conjures George’s guardian angel Clarence (Henry Travers), who shows George all the good he has done and what life would have been like had he never existed. Taking over the management of Bailey Building and Loan Society after his father’s death, we learn George gave up his dreams to stay in his hometown of Bedford Falls. Wealthy Henry F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) owns the entire town, and in turn, the people. The only thing out of his grasp is...

The only thing out of his grasp is the Bailey Building and Loan Society, but he has it in his sights and will do anything to get it.

Eventually the pressures put upon George mount, and the threat of financial ruin looms. Clarence, desperate to earn his wings, shows the despondent George, in a style similar to Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, an alternate reality where he doesn’t exist: his brother drowned because he wasn’t there to save him; his love Mary (Donna Reed) is a spinster; and Potter owns everything. George then realises, yes, It’s a Wonderful Life indeed.

This film strikes a chord with so many because inherently we are all George Bailey; someone down on his luck and at times loses sight of what their life is worth. Eliciting feelings of passion, joy, despair and hope, Capra’s classic was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture, but ultimately gained popularity in later years on television and home video. James Stewart admitted this was his favourite role he ever played and who can argue with that. After all, it’s George Bailey who reminds us all that we can be rich in more ways than our bank account - something we should all remember whether it’s Christmas or not.

Very much a product of its times, early post-war, but with a message that is still relevant. Leaving aside talking galaxies and the intervention of angels, there is a solid human drama at the heart of the movie. And it's not a joyful Christmas story, as the film's reputation might suggest. The central character becomes increasingly nasty and belligerent, traits already on display as a teenager (which really doesn't work, played by middle-aged Jimmy Stewart).

This is a wonderful old movie, beautifully acted by James Stewart especially. I think every person would benefit from watching this movie and should be watched by high school students and anyone that ever doubted themselves. Is there any among us that have not done this? Our whole family of varying ages just loved it!

A Black and White classic, I read the reviews and thought it sounded good, this was actually better than expected and like all black and whites you forget you are not watching colour and sets the mood for the times of the film. A really enjoyable easy to watch movie if you want a laid back night and be left feeling happy at the end. My 10 year old was reluctant at first but even he ended up enjoying it. See James Cagney as a young charming actor and see why he was big in those days. Love the way they talked back then too. For lovers of classic old movies and those who want to watch something different.

A nice story, a great message...but it was just way too long - it was in need of a good editor.

A classic that stands the test of time. Jimmy Stewart really is a joy to watch. Only bummer is that there was no dvd commentary or other special features, like The Philadelphia Story.

Fantastic movie, life story of a boy growing up to manhood, how he wanted different things in his life, ended up staying in his home town and making a difference. James Stewart played the lead role and did a great job of it. This is a family movie worth watching.

A little long winded in parts but mainly a lovely old film with a good story. Those who don't like too much "doom and gloom" won't enjoy this movie but it you can get past it, it's worth a look.

I first saw this movie in 1958 on my very first black and white TV. I loved it then and enjoyed it even more today. Certainly a timeless classic, with very fine performances from all the actors.
