Spoiled Ellie Andrews (Colbert from SINCE YOU WENT AWAY) escapes from her millionaire father (Walter Connolly from TWENTIETH CENTURY), who wants to stop her from marrying a worthless playboy. En route to New York, Ellie gets involved with an out-of-work newsman, Peter Warne (Gable from GONE WITH THE WIND). When their bus breaks down, the bickering couple set off on a madcap hitchhiking expedition. Peter hopes to turn the inside story of their misadventures into a job. But complications fly when the runaway heiress and brash reporter fall in love. Directed by Frank Capra (IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE), IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT was the first movie to be honoured with all five major Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Clark Gable), Best Actress (Claudette Colbert), Best Director and Best Screenplay.

“They just don’t make films like they used to.” It’s easy to say this when faced with a weekend box office consisting of another comic book reboot and a lazy comedy sequel, but it’s never truer than when spoken about Frank Capra’s It Happened One Night. In this 1934 romantic comedy, Claudette Colbert plays spoilt heiress Ellen Andrews who marries gold-digger “King” Westley against her father’s wishes. Before they can consummate the marriage, her father whisks her off to his private boat, but she escapes and heads to New York to reunite with her husband. On her way she meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a recently fired newspaper reporter who agrees to help her on her journey in exchange for an exclusive story.

Of course, during the voyage the pair face challenges and adventures that ultimately bring them closer. It’s a romcom after all!

Winner of five Oscars - unprecedented at the time - this classic took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. This winning streak would not be matched until One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest achieved the same in 1975. The film is the blueprint that every modern romcom should aim towards, with witty dialogue, a strong female role, great chemistry, continuous laughs and, of course, a central couple the audience wants to root for. Most importantly, it stands the test of time and It Happened One Night remains as loved and relevant today as it was 77 years ago.

As is usually the case with great films, there are ample stories about troubled production or difficult stars, and although Gable is widely known to have been difficult to work with, a good dose of on set practical jokes put him and Colbert at ease. They were both initially dissatisfied with the script - which is hard to believe now - and were not the first choices to play Ellie and Peter. Despite the initial production hurdles, the film would not have been such a lasting hit had they not filled these roles. It’s a classic in every sense of the word.

Every romantic comedy made in the last 70 years has borrowed or stolen from this pioneering classic, screwball comedy. The "hitchhiking scene" and the "wall of jericho" are still very funny today and the film has aged very well. It deserved every one of its five Oscars including "Best Picture" and should be watched by everyone remotely interested in the genre. A personal favourite and a must see.

Its no wonder this classic movie won five Oscars. Frank Capra excels at this type of feel good movie and he doesn't let us down with this one. Gable and Colbert are in truly sensational form and their performances cannot be faulted in any way. One of my all-time favourite movies that I have no hesitation in recommending to all.

Ellie (Claudette Colbert) is virtually a prisoner aboard her father's luxury yacht moored off the Florida coast. He doesn't like the man she has just married and wants her to agree to annul the marriage. In a fury she dashes out of the cabin and dives over the side. We next see her boarding a bus to New York where she meets journalist, Peter Warne (Clark Gable). He doesn't realize until later that he is sharing a seat with a runaway heiress, a big news story, and so is in no mood to put up with her high-handed attitude. She in turn objects to his familiarity, but soon has to be more friendly when she is down to her last dollar. A long bus trip with stop-overs gives the passengers plenty of opportunity to chat and argue. Ellie and Peter do just that, and eventually come to tolerating each other's company. One of the best romantic comedies from way-back. Clark Gable is at his most charismatic, and Claudette Colbert the perfect foil for him.

Wonderful old movie. I enjoyed it just as much today as I did 40 years ago. The actors were all great, especially Gable in his comedy routine.

A pleasant surprise for an old black & white movie, with a tight script, good acting & a good ending, it was all filmed in 4 weeks! We'll watch more of Frank Capra's ( the director ) films.
