I enjoyed this Movie, Meryl is a great character actress. It was quite an emotional movie giving us an insight into Margaret, her marriage and relationship with her husband.
Meryl Streep is brilliant as usual, have never been disappointed with any of her films. Don't know much about the real Margaret Thatcher, but this movie gave me an insight into what it takes to become the first female prime minister in Britain which still has not happened in Australia or the USA.
What an amazing woman. Even if you dislike her this movie shows draws you in to know more of her not only the personal but the political side of Margaret. She was pivotal in keeping UK above water. I dont often say I would watch a movie again but this one I would.
Great movie. Amazing insight into an amazing person
Absolutely loved this movie but I am quite sure not for everyone. Loved the way the story was told in flashback with her talking to Dennis. But the main reason I enjoyed this so much is because of Meryl. She was awesome playing Maggie.
Great movie! Amazing lady
Good film with very solid performances especially by the wonderful and extremely talented Meryl Streep. I probably would have liked the story to focus a little more on the politics, but still a very moving film about aging and loss, even when your famous.
Really interesting insight into such an influental political leader. Meryl is amazing as always and really embodied the character. Could have placed a bit more focus on her time as PM.
Didnt watch full movie, Meryl Streep was so boring and her voice got on our nerves (so false)
I found the whole thing boring.
Meryl Streep plays this role absolutely fantastically- so convincing. It was a good film & I liked the way in dipped in & out of different eras throughout her life. Good ending too!
Not a great movie but very well acted. Meryl Streep is incredible.
Meryl Streep is magnificent, but the film is c**p.It is not about the 'Iron Lady' but a near senile old woman having occasional, poorly presented flashbacks
Great portrayal by Meryl Streep once again. Puts into some perspective what the pressures are that have to be borne by leaders who are voted/thrust into these positions whichever side of the political argument they come from.
Quite enjoyed this movie...it was very well acted but not stupendous
I really enjoyed it. Husband said it was a bit slow
Good movie if your into Politics.
A little disappointing. More could have been made of her political life, not her old age and illnesses. The special features were OK (as well).
I really hated this. At a reality level I feel sorry for the poms - what a horrible time they have had with the IRA. But Thatcher just seems like a complete tool in this movie. The movie itself is also pretty horrible. Sorry I really dont want to watch a geriatric fuddle around for 120 mins... and I dont hate old people... its how this was done - it was just awful. Sorry 1/5
Not as good as I thought it was going to be. It was strange that they focused the whole movie on the last years of her life when she was not in good health, as opposed to some of the great events that she lead the country through.
‘The Iron Lady’ is a mishmash with a script that concentrates on Mrs Thatcher’s private life at the expense of her public one. Phyllidia Lloyd’s direction is clumsy and at time confusing, switching back and forth in time. However, what saves the film is Meryl Streep’s performance and that is worth watching. I'd give her performance 5 stars but the film itself isn't worth 2.
I never liked Margaret Thatcher and I'm not a fan of Meryl Streep but I'll admit I enjoyed the movie. It shows her in her later years. I felt pity for her and Meryl Streep did a very good job. The movie is worth a watch.
I don't know why the movie was called The Iron Lady. We saw very little of the Iron Lady in her prime - just glimpses of her pre-political days and a huge portion about an aged and demented lady. Perhaps this aspect should be reflected in the title. The denetia was true to life and so were the hallucinations. Merryl looked and acted the part well. The accent was well done, for an American, even if it didn't quite sound natural. Overall a disappointment and I await a follow-up on the real Iron Lady.
Meryl Streep very clever again. Great story of an amazing iron lady. A little sad in later years.
Meryl Streep is brilliant , enjoyed this movie so much !
Sad & brilliant simultaneously
The life and times of Margaret Thatcher . The impact that Thatcher had on Britain is skimmed across in this biopic which spends too much time on her dementia in old age. It’s a pity because Streep’s performance in first rate and could have been used to even greater effect. 3.5 stars
It's a no from me..........I'm old enough to remember PM Thatcher and I remembered most of the "flashbacks". I can't see the point of the movie, she has always been a sort of hero of mine,I didn't want to see her like that. We all are destined for the scrap heap at some time and I didn't want to see my hero as a decrepit old woman. Thanks a lot ! Thats all the movie is, a decrepit old woman shuffling about daydreaming of the past. 2 stars just for Meryl
Meryl Streep was brilliant as Margaret Thatcher. I wasn't a real fan of the way the film kept moving from present day to memories. It made it disjointed and confusing at times. Overall worth watching though.
was a bit long and boring and felt real sorry for thatcher, great to see things that we can remember in our time
A real star vehicle for Meryl Streep. She's brilliant, but the movie is just so-so.
Excellent movie -- Streep is frighteningly good and a dead ringer for Thatcher. My only negative is that the transition from brilliant politician to controlling despot was a little abrupt. Highly recommended.
Meryl Steept was brilliant. The film was slow and did spend much to much time looking at Maggie in her old age. In view of the many things she did and didn't do, more of a mix of her time in office would have done the film justice. I lived through her period in office and she was one of the most hated persons of the time, Came out with some very odd sayings which only made us all realise how removed she was from the man in the street. Poor old Dennis was a bit of a comedy side line.
Hi the disk is faulty and I'd like another copy I have watched half cante watch the rest I can't seem to locate the complaint section?
Thanks
Embarressed to admist I even rented this one. WHY OH WHY did it receive such good reviews. Must have been money involved.
Would have liked more about her in her prime than in her regressive years. Great woman that the left love to hate as they do to anyone who's against getting a free lunch.
Too hard to follow. too in depth. didn't even finish it
Meryl was great but generallya bit boring!
Brillant movie. All characters brilliantly acted. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie & mesmerised by Meryl Streep/Maggie Thatcher. I don't want to give anything away but i found this movie gives meaningful insight into an aged Maggie Thatcher no longer PM & a her younger self moving her way towards PM taking you beyond 'The Iron Lady' facade by looking back at integral parts of her political life. Not a poliitcal movie for those expecting it to be about politics.
Bit confusing at the beginning but worth the wait. Certainly gives an insight to a politicians life and the sacrifices they have to make, especially when in the top job. Family suffers, but in the long run, so do they. Not bad - give 2.5 star rating
This movie is an insult to the first female leader, to portray here as a dithering old lady is so disrespectful, no mater what your political stance, don't waste your time on this rubbish.
Could have been much better. Great acting but found the flashbacks and her dead husband appearing every five seconds distracting from what should have been a strong political story and journey.
Great film. Really shows her in a human light so to speak. interesting for people who like that genre of real life type films.
Excellent movie. flashbacks well done Great acting
I think this is the best movie I've seen this year - absolutely amazing. It's not about politics so don't go into it with that expectation - it's about a woman and her memories, the parts of her life that remained a part of her. It's not a flashback movie, it's a memory movie. Meryl Streep is absolutely brilliant but my favourite character is Denis. Sadly many people will miss out on this story by wanting it to be something else.
I thought it was quite boring. It's all about flashbacks of her life but more about her having moments with her dead husband. Dissapointing-as a person who loves politics, it was a let down.
A good movie, Meryl Streep brilliant in the role of Margaret Thatcher, but it was way too long & dwelled too much on the present instead of showing more of the political side of things. Worth a watch though
Yeh, a bit on the slow and boring side...............
Good movie but drags at times, especially with the scenes of Thatcher as an elderly lady. Streep puts in a great performance but even her acting skill cannot stop the inconsistent flow of the storyline.
Let me say from the outset: Meryl Streep is THE finest actor of our generation. I give 2 stars for her outstanding performance. With regards to the rest of the movie, all I can say is it's a missed opportunity. This is a poorly written and directed biopic of one of the most influential leaders of the Western world. Whether you liked her or not, Margaret Thatcher broke through the glass ceiling with dogged determination, disrupted the gentleman's establishment and ruled a nation on her terms. The downfall of this movie is you only get glimpses of this through flashback, with the main emphasis placed more on her personal battle with memory loss and symptoms of dementia during old age. Although this is tragic, I think the audience would have been better served with greater focus on her overcoming the challenges of the English parliamentary establishment and her iron determination to get her own way that polarised a whole nation. Disappointing.
Could've been a lot better but worth seeing for the historical interest & Meryl Streep's acting
really badly produced and though I was fascinated by the lady and what made her tick, there was no detail into her rise to power at all, just spasmodic clips from various scenes in her life. After the whole movie I hadnt really learnt much about her all and I thought it coudl have been handled a lot better.
I dont know who the director or producer were, but in the hands of someone else it could have been a great movie...but it wasnt
I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this considering I've never liked the woman or her politics. Merryl, as usual, was fabulous, it's worth seeing just for her performance.
This was great - really interesting perspective on dementia and grief and the amazing events that led to Thatcher being the most powerful woman in the world. Not much policitcal analysis but interesting to see those events from her perspective.
Beautiful film. Much more human than I thought it would be. May be a bit slow for some but I thought it was a lovely portrayal of the woman behind the name.
Just another reason to show why Meryl Streep has won so many Oscars. She is amazing. We wish there was more showing Margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister as they seemed to make it more about her declining years of dementia which I thought was a bit unnecessary. We enjoyed it all the same.
So wanted to see this movie - - left me feeling deflated - - thought it would be more. Meryl Steep was great though.
I have been waiting a long time to see this movie and was not disappointed. I loved it. The casting, the acting and the themes are so good. We've all heard how great Merryl Streep is in playing Maggie Thatcher, and she is, but also the actress that does Maggie as a young woman is just so characterful and convincing. The interweaving of public affairs and the private life is a masterpiece. One memorable highlight is Mrs Thatcher's speech to her doctor, expressing her philosophy so succinctly.
I loved the intertwining of the past and present in this film. The film shows her early political determination and aspirations and the warm relationship with her husband. This film hit all the right notes for me; the first female Prime Minister of the UK shrieking at the booming blokes, the pale blue suit in the halls of parliament amongst the dark flow of suits, her tenacious independence..... Wonderful
While Streep's performance deserved its Oscar, I found the film slow, with too much time spent on her in her old age. I think more time should have been devoted to her time in office. Let's face it - there shouldn't have been any shortage of material for them to use! And jumping backwards and forwards between her in old age and when she was in office was a bit disconcerting at times.
I thought this was a brilliant performance by Meryl Streep. Absolutely brilliant! Don't believe the film was as kind to Thatcher as some critics/audiences made out.
It was worth watching for Meryl Streep's performance - well deserved Oscar there - the story was good, but not quite enough depth for me.
Just OK. Meryl Streep is amazing but much of the film is her as an elderly lady pottering amount. Would have loved to see more of the flashbacks. I don't feel I learnt as much about this person's career as I could have.
Brilliant film with real news footage included of the miners' strikes and poll tax riots. Staggeringly brilliant performance by Meryl Streep. Highly recommended, but a sad film too with Maggie Thatcher's descent into dementia sympathetically portrayed.
This movie was a great letdown to me.Don,t know why she was given her award, i have seen her do better.
Sorry but i hated it, disjointed and boring!!
You could be forgiven for thinking that Meryl Streep is the only actor on screen. So dominant is she throughout the story, that the supporting cast are often hardly noticeable, even though the film is packed with many notable British actors. Streep gives an amazing performance - is there nothing this woman can't do? Never once did I think that I was seeing a performance, for me it was always the Iron Lady herself that was up on the screen. As marvellous as Streep is in this biopic of Thatcher, I can't say that I was happy about the way the film was constructed. The continual flashbacks to different periods of her life from her dementia riddled old age were often confusing and mildly irritating to this viewer. 5 stars for Streep but only 3 for the movie.
Interesting enjoyable movie, passionate portrayal
I really enjoyed the way the film was made, you either love it or hate it, I love how everything she touched brought back yet another memory, clearly though if you don't understand the concept through her looking glass its not going to interest you... it's true ....It used to be about making a difference. Now its about making themselves into someone. Sad truths.
The question is: Why was this film ever made? It is certainly not engaging except, mildly, as a study of old age. There is no script, except for the snippets of Thatcher's pre and post-political life adorned with a miner's strike here and a polttax riot there. Only the most adoring admirers of Thatcher may like this movie.
What a pity that the writer of this screenplay decided to base this story around an elderly lady, rather than a vibrant tough Prime Minister, it makes the movie unfit for viewing consumption!
Very disappointing and disjointed. I have nothing more to say as this film isn't worthy of more comment!
A seriously flawed and unsatisfying film. While the premise of an elderly lady looking back over her life has artistic merit and interest, far too much time is spent with the old woman and it gets tedious. The more interesting aspect of Margaret Thatcher's life and leadership is told only in snatches with too little detail and context. The political players around her appear to be in a pantomime rather than real life. And despite all the plaudits for Meryl Streep looking and sounding like Thatcher, after a while she looks and sounds like ... Meryl Streep.
A brilliant performance from Streep is overshadowed by a frankly messy script; with constant lurches in time and narrative resulting in a badly disjointed attempt to examine the rise and fall of Britain's most controversial PM. Thanks to this fragmented structure (meant to echo Thatcher's own fragile state of mind in her twilight years) the film is guilty of the cardinal sin of biopics - we never get a real insight into the woman behind the image. Instead we get glimpses of young Margaret, angry Margaret, mother Margaret, powerful Margaret et al; through a series of vignettes that are generally more style than substance. To add to the muddle, the film also inexplicably undermines its own strongly feminist stance with a completely contradictory closing scene.
Rather like the Iron Lady herself; this is a film of good intentions that ultimately falls victim to its own ambitions.
Wasn't as good as all the hype would have led me to believe.
As always Meryl Streep was brilliant. Shame the story let her down somewhat.
I would have liked to have seen more of how Margaret Thatcher's career came about (more detail).
A powerhouse performance by Meryl Streep, but the convoluted storytelling indicates some really sloppy writing. This could have been a fantastic film, but just falls short.
Absolutely brilliant, without a doubt Meryl Streep is one of the most talented & capable actress of our time. This film is a look at the career & life of one the world most influential and remarkable women in decades, an icon in British politics, it is a look at her life/times through her eyes after the death of her loving & supportive Husband Denis, as her health & ages catches up with her.
I think you would have to have an interest in English history and politics to fully appreciate how touching and moving this rendition is. I was so impressed I will be buying a copy for my own very 'English' Mum for Mother's Day and I'm sure she will enjoy it as much as she did 'Queen' with Helen Merrin in 2006.
