The Iron Lady is the story of a woman who came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world. It is a film about power and the price that is paid for power, a story that is both unique and universal. The Iron Lady stars Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher and Jim Broadbent as her husband, Denis.

Maggie, actually
by Simon Miraudo,

You can always trust a good old fashioned biopic to sand down the edges of history's most complex and interesting characters. Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady simplifies, distorts, and grossly misrepresents the tenure of Britain's most controversial Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, as well as the era in which she governed. But it's not just blandly conceived; it's also unendingly silly. Monty Python is evoked more often than The King's Speech, and star Meryl Streep seems to be reprising her performance as Julia Child from Julie and Julia (although she's turned all the way up to '11' here, which is saying something). Worst of all, The Iron Lady is ideologically poisonous. It champions Thatcher without once calling her out. Anyone who opposes 'Thatcherism' is positioned as either sexist ('W...

Anyone who opposes 'Thatcherism' is positioned as either sexist ('What would a woman know about war?') or classist ('Look at this grocer's daughter teaching us about taxes'), as if there were no rational reason for disagreeing with the woman or her ways. In the same way an entirely-critical film would provide an unfair depiction, Lloyd's rose-tinted, tone-deaf, hamfisted, gauche, funhouse-mirror version is similarly misguided.

The picture begins with 86-year-old Thatcher (Streep in full chicken-skin makeup) tottering around her estate, haunted by the ghost of her husband Denis (a playful but out-of-place Jim Broadbent). Before you can say 'Jacob Marley', the hallucinatory Maggie begins to reflect on her days as a plucky young politician (Alexandra Roach) and eventually as the UK's first female PM. Amidst visits from her daughter Carol (Olivia Colman) and a trip to the doctor, old Margaret recalls the tumultuous events of her time at 10 Downing Street: IRA bombings, the Falklands War, and, of course, the general unrest in Britain during the 1980s. Through it all she speechifies and tells people to pick themselves up by their bootstraps. She wears her pearls and she primps her hair and we're meant to believe she's both inspirational and a human being just like us despite the fact neither Lloyd or screenwriter Abi Morgan are capable of conveying either effectively.

At least the eons better King's Speech - which conveniently sidestepped Bertie's more controversial moments in power - had the wisdom to focus on a small aspect of his Kingship (notably, his delivery of a speech) and managed to paint an effective and affecting portrait of his character. The Iron Lady tries the kitchen sink approach; no, not by evoking the kitchen sink dramas of Ken Loach, but rather by attempting to cover every single facet of Maggie's existence in just over 100 minutes. How could they have expected the final product to be anything other than reductive?

By hammering home the female empowerment angle, The Iron Lady ends up succumbing to the sexism it supposedly rails against. The film piggybacks one prejudice to enforce another, groundlessly dismissing the disenfranchised and stifling political discussion as well as differences of opinion. It does a disservice to almost everyone. Even Thatcher. We see her as a doddering old lady slowly going mad, talking to her late hubby and howling for the ravens to stop rapping at her chamber door (or something). But why? So we pity her? Isn't that the laziest way to absolve a character of their ethically dubious choices? Why feel for, relate, be compelled, or even challenged by an elderly woman who has almost no opinion on the life she's lived? What's the point of spending time with a character at the end of their time on this earthly plane when they reflect on the actions of their past without a critical eye? I'm not asking to see a Thatcher plagued with guilt; I'm merely asking to see a Thatcher that feels real.

1.5/5

Meryl Streep is brilliant as usual, have never been disappointed with any of her films. Don't know much about the real Margaret Thatcher, but this movie gave me an insight into what it takes to become the first female prime minister in Britain which still has not happened in Australia or the USA.

What an amazing woman. Even if you dislike her this movie shows draws you in to know more of her not only the personal but the political side of Margaret. She was pivotal in keeping UK above water. I dont often say I would watch a movie again but this one I would.

Absolutely loved this movie but I am quite sure not for everyone. Loved the way the story was told in flashback with her talking to Dennis. But the main reason I enjoyed this so much is because of Meryl. She was awesome playing Maggie.

Good film with very solid performances especially by the wonderful and extremely talented Meryl Streep. I probably would have liked the story to focus a little more on the politics, but still a very moving film about aging and loss, even when your famous.

Great portrayal by Meryl Streep once again. Puts into some perspective what the pressures are that have to be borne by leaders who are voted/thrust into these positions whichever side of the political argument they come from.

I really hated this. At a reality level I feel sorry for the poms - what a horrible time they have had with the IRA. But Thatcher just seems like a complete tool in this movie. The movie itself is also pretty horrible. Sorry I really dont want to watch a geriatric fuddle around for 120 mins... and I dont hate old people... its how this was done - it was just awful. Sorry 1/5

Not as good as I thought it was going to be. It was strange that they focused the whole movie on the last years of her life when she was not in good health, as opposed to some of the great events that she lead the country through.

‘The Iron Lady’ is a mishmash with a script that concentrates on Mrs Thatcher’s private life at the expense of her public one. Phyllidia Lloyd’s direction is clumsy and at time confusing, switching back and forth in time. However, what saves the film is Meryl Streep’s performance and that is worth watching. I'd give her performance 5 stars but the film itself isn't worth 2.

I don't know why the movie was called The Iron Lady. We saw very little of the Iron Lady in her prime - just glimpses of her pre-political days and a huge portion about an aged and demented lady. Perhaps this aspect should be reflected in the title. The denetia was true to life and so were the hallucinations. Merryl looked and acted the part well. The accent was well done, for an American, even if it didn't quite sound natural. Overall a disappointment and I await a follow-up on the real Iron Lady.

The life and times of Margaret Thatcher . The impact that Thatcher had on Britain is skimmed across in this biopic which spends too much time on her dementia in old age. It’s a pity because Streep’s performance in first rate and could have been used to even greater effect. 3.5 stars

It's a no from me..........I'm old enough to remember PM Thatcher and I remembered most of the "flashbacks". I can't see the point of the movie, she has always been a sort of hero of mine,I didn't want to see her like that. We all are destined for the scrap heap at some time and I didn't want to see my hero as a decrepit old woman. Thanks a lot ! Thats all the movie is, a decrepit old woman shuffling about daydreaming of the past. 2 stars just for Meryl

Meryl Steept was brilliant. The film was slow and did spend much to much time looking at Maggie in her old age. In view of the many things she did and didn't do, more of a mix of her time in office would have done the film justice. I lived through her period in office and she was one of the most hated persons of the time, Came out with some very odd sayings which only made us all realise how removed she was from the man in the street. Poor old Dennis was a bit of a comedy side line.

Brillant movie. All characters brilliantly acted. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie & mesmerised by Meryl Streep/Maggie Thatcher. I don't want to give anything away but i found this movie gives meaningful insight into an aged Maggie Thatcher no longer PM & a her younger self moving her way towards PM taking you beyond 'The Iron Lady' facade by looking back at integral parts of her political life. Not a poliitcal movie for those expecting it to be about politics.

I think this is the best movie I've seen this year - absolutely amazing. It's not about politics so don't go into it with that expectation - it's about a woman and her memories, the parts of her life that remained a part of her. It's not a flashback movie, it's a memory movie. Meryl Streep is absolutely brilliant but my favourite character is Denis. Sadly many people will miss out on this story by wanting it to be something else.

Let me say from the outset: Meryl Streep is THE finest actor of our generation. I give 2 stars for her outstanding performance. With regards to the rest of the movie, all I can say is it's a missed opportunity. This is a poorly written and directed biopic of one of the most influential leaders of the Western world. Whether you liked her or not, Margaret Thatcher broke through the glass ceiling with dogged determination, disrupted the gentleman's establishment and ruled a nation on her terms. The downfall of this movie is you only get glimpses of this through flashback, with the main emphasis placed more on her personal battle with memory loss and symptoms of dementia during old age. Although this is tragic, I think the audience would have been better served with greater focus on her overcoming the challenges of the English parliamentary establishment and her iron determination to get her own way that polarised a whole nation. Disappointing.

Just another reason to show why Meryl Streep has won so many Oscars. She is amazing. We wish there was more showing Margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister as they seemed to make it more about her declining years of dementia which I thought was a bit unnecessary. We enjoyed it all the same.

I have been waiting a long time to see this movie and was not disappointed. I loved it. The casting, the acting and the themes are so good. We've all heard how great Merryl Streep is in playing Maggie Thatcher, and she is, but also the actress that does Maggie as a young woman is just so characterful and convincing. The interweaving of public affairs and the private life is a masterpiece. One memorable highlight is Mrs Thatcher's speech to her doctor, expressing her philosophy so succinctly.

I loved the intertwining of the past and present in this film. The film shows her early political determination and aspirations and the warm relationship with her husband. This film hit all the right notes for me; the first female Prime Minister of the UK shrieking at the booming blokes, the pale blue suit in the halls of parliament amongst the dark flow of suits, her tenacious independence..... Wonderful

While Streep's performance deserved its Oscar, I found the film slow, with too much time spent on her in her old age. I think more time should have been devoted to her time in office. Let's face it - there shouldn't have been any shortage of material for them to use! And jumping backwards and forwards between her in old age and when she was in office was a bit disconcerting at times.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Meryl Streep is the only actor on screen. So dominant is she throughout the story, that the supporting cast are often hardly noticeable, even though the film is packed with many notable British actors. Streep gives an amazing performance - is there nothing this woman can't do? Never once did I think that I was seeing a performance, for me it was always the Iron Lady herself that was up on the screen. As marvellous as Streep is in this biopic of Thatcher, I can't say that I was happy about the way the film was constructed. The continual flashbacks to different periods of her life from her dementia riddled old age were often confusing and mildly irritating to this viewer. 5 stars for Streep but only 3 for the movie.

There is no script, except for the snippets of Thatcher's pre and post-political life adorned with a miner's strike here and a polttax riot there. Only the most adoring admirers of Thatcher may like this movie.

A seriously flawed and unsatisfying film. While the premise of an elderly lady looking back over her life has artistic merit and interest, far too much time is spent with the old woman and it gets tedious. The more interesting aspect of Margaret Thatcher's life and leadership is told only in snatches with too little detail and context. The political players around her appear to be in a pantomime rather than real life. And despite all the plaudits for Meryl Streep looking and sounding like Thatcher, after a while she looks and sounds like ... Meryl Streep.

A brilliant performance from Streep is overshadowed by a frankly messy script; with constant lurches in time and narrative resulting in a badly disjointed attempt to examine the rise and fall of Britain's most controversial PM. Thanks to this fragmented structure (meant to echo Thatcher's own fragile state of mind in her twilight years) the film is guilty of the cardinal sin of biopics - we never get a real insight into the woman behind the image. Instead we get glimpses of young Margaret, angry Margaret, mother Margaret, powerful Margaret et al; through a series of vignettes that are generally more style than substance. To add to the muddle, the film also inexplicably undermines its own strongly feminist stance with a completely contradictory closing scene. Rather like the Iron Lady herself; this is a film of good intentions that ultimately falls victim to its own ambitions.

Absolutely brilliant, without a doubt Meryl Streep is one of the most talented & capable actress of our time. This film is a look at the career & life of one the world most influential and remarkable women in decades, an icon in British politics, it is a look at her life/times through her eyes after the death of her loving & supportive Husband Denis, as her health & ages catches up with her. I think you would have to have an interest in English history and politics to fully appreciate how touching and moving this rendition is. I was so impressed I will be buying a copy for my own very 'English' Mum for Mother's Day and I'm sure she will enjoy it as much as she did 'Queen' with Helen Merrin in 2006.
