The Iron Giant (1999)

Great little animated story.

This is hands-down my favorite animated film. Brad Bird is a genius.

Really fun family movie - directed by Brad Bird of Pixar fame - MUST SEE for all lovers of classic animation.

As a fan of robots, my 6yo LOVED this movie. I was surprised at the celebrity cast for voices. Good movie!

Based on a book, I saw this animation reviewed on 'The Circle' and had thought of purchasing it one day. I was so pleased to find it on your movie list. I introduced this movie to my 2 children who had no idea of this movie's plot. This is a lovely story bringing meaning to a boy and a newly arrived robot's relationship. It kind of reminds you of a new pet to the family. Even adults can get a chuckle out of it. My 6yr old actually watched it twice without a word!

Very sweet, actually brought a tear to our eyes..

This film got fantastic reviews and I was sure my seven year old would love it, but he was not interested. Something about the animation style and storyline didn't appeal to him.

Solid Gold. This is a great movie. Not much more to say without spoilers.

The whole family loved this film. I actually cried at the end! The kids wanted to watch it over and over again. we will be buying this film. Highly reccommended. Powerful anti-war message that is easy for children to understand and not too much for them to absorb.

The first feature of Brad Bird, the genius behind the Incredibles. Beautiful, well animated, funny story - highly recommended.

Really delightful, a lovely roller-coaster ride for kids, exciting with a very human message. And Jennifer Aniston's best ever performance! I'd rate this with The Incredibles.

The Iron Giant is a classic -- a flawless film that is perfect entertainment for the whole family.

it is a heartwarming movie. it also shows that vin desil is tough on the outside and a big kid at heart.

Completely agree with Matt O'Brien's review. From a movie buff's point of view: I believe Brad Bird is one of the best director's of this time. Unfortunately his art form (NOT 'genre'! ;-) is animation, which adult audiences still look upon with slight disdain. 'The Incredibles' immediately shot into my top favourite movies of all times. Like any great classic movie, Bird's two masterpieces can be watched over and over again. They are gorgeous, entertaining and have a lot to tell. When you rent the DVD, don't forget to watch the deleted scenes and listen to the director's audio commentary. Very rarely will you find a director giving you such a riveting 'behind the scenes' of filmmaking, from screenwriting to post-production. Needless to say: I am a fan!

Sometimes "children's" films are thought incapable of making serious statements about "real" issues. I'd contend that children's films (and books for that matter) that seek to tackle serious issues hit the mark more often than not. "The Iron Giant" hits the mark and hits it forcefully. This is not a "safe" and innocuous film. I watched it for about the 5th time yesterday and, despite repeated veiwings, it still managed to floor me. The issue of violence as the first solution is unfortunately still timely and "The Iron Giant" is scathingly critical of this mindset. The rise of the Atomic Age in 1950's America must have been terrifying (especially for the young). In just a short couple of decades the horrible reality of conventional warfare had exponentially grown into the living nightmare of nuclear annihilation. Brad Bird captured something of this fear and tapped into the guile-free understanding so often associated with children. Watching this film makes me feel in my heart that war is no solution ... that war is a fundamentally flawed solution. It does this by giving the viewer an insight into the base factors that influence the people who make the decisions. Pre-emptive violence is logically a product of fear. Governement asseses a particular threat based on false intelligence, government acts to sterilise said threat (i.e. government is unsure of Giant's capabilty, government recieves false intelligence regarding Giant's intentions, goverment seeks to destroy Giant). For those of us that love peace and who will entertain any solution before violence "The Iron Giant" is a vindication. Watching it rekindled the anger I felt when protesting the Iraq War last year. Apart from being a powerful anti-war film "The Iron Giant" is also a film about love and friendship (you could argue that the two themes go hand in hand ... I would!). The film explores the relationship between Hogarth and the Giant in a totally sugar-free way. I found the love between these two more believable than any number of relationships in other films ("Titanic" springs to mind). Having a friend that you would risk all for is the most precious thing in the universe.

Great moral tale with an endearing metal-munching not-monster.
