Here is the powerful true story based on John Bayley's novels that earned Jim Broadbent an Academy Award for Best supporting Actor and Academy Award Nominations for Best Actress Judi Dench and Best Supporting Actress Kate Winslet.

Judi Dench (Shakespeare In Love) and Kate Winslet (Titanic) bring to the screen one of the most extraordinary women of the 20th century, celebrated author Iris Murdoch. As told by her unlikely soulmate, husband John Bayley, Iris first became known as a brilliant young scholar at Oxford whose boundless spirit dazzled those around her. Then, during a remarkable career as a novelist and philosopher, she continued to prove herself as a woman ahead of her time. Even in later life as age and illness robbed Iris of her remarkable gifts, nothing could diminish her immense influence or weaken the bond with her devoted husband.

Loved the film. Jim Broadbent played the muddle headed professor and totally devoted husband so well.

An absolutely beautiful movie, both Judi Danch and Jim broadbent played their parts brilliantly. Kate Winslet playing the young Iris also beautifully, with the story flashing between the past and present, well told, having had experience with this side of life, truly played out, brought tears to my eyes.

Nearly gave up on this movie. I would have only for Judi Dench being in it. Her role was impeccable. A very sad film from beginning to end and very slow. Dementia is devastating for those around the patient. Happily the affected seem unaffected. My mother had it.

There are horror films; boring films, disgusting films, but this would have to be the most depressing film ever made. It's a wonder the cast did not commit mass suicide after making it. If you are over 50 don't bother; under 50, the acting and direction is superb.

Beautiful potrayal of the tragedgy of one of the degenerative brain disorders....Judi Dench is powerful and hauntingly striking in this courageous movie. Hats off to the actor who plays her husband. A must see for anyone in nursing or aged care, or indeed for anyone caring for a relative with dementia or Alzheimers.

Not exactly a "feel good" movie, but an excellent portrayal of "Iris" particularly as an older woman by Judi Dench. I enjoyed the movie as a sensitive look at this tragic woman.
