An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe. Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire and his street smart ex-con caretaker, The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.

All other contenders for feel-good film of the year can pack up and head home because in writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s comedy drama The Intouchables we’ve found a winner. Having already broken box office records in France, it is now the country’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

Based on a true story, the picture focuses on the relationship between a quadriplegic millionaire, Philippe (François Cluzet), and his new caregiver from the projects Driss (Omar Sy). The two are polar opposites and their differences provide the perfect ingredients for a heartfelt discovery of the power of friendship. In each other they find what they have been seeking for so long; Driss doesn’t pity Philippe’s disability and forces him to engage with life and women again, while Philippe provides Driss with a haven from his destructive environment and teaches him the importance of good, honest work.

The strength of this feature lies in the chemistry between Cluzet and Sy, whose performances are affecting and realistic. The film doesn’t dwell too long on the negatives, with Driss’ complicated family situation, crime and drug issues receiving nominal screen time; The Intouchables is instead largely focused on the influence of friendship and redemption in transforming one’s life. Music is also used to emphasise the change in mood and time with Philippe’s love of classical composers juxtaposed with Driss’ favourite band, Earth, Wind & Fire, adding to a diverse and uplifting soundtrack.

The movie has been criticised by some for several reasons, including a particular scene in which Driss is testing his new employer’s disability by pouring hot coffee on his legs. Philippe remains, of course, unaware, and in any other film this might be viewed as offensive. But with the charm on display from both Cluzet and Sy, the moment comes off simply as humorous and cheeky, and clearly no malice is intended. It’s simply the beginning in a string of fish-out-of-water situations that shape these two and their relationship, and lead to equally amusing scenes, including Driss’ first time at the opera and a joy ride that culminates in a car chase and an elaborate hoax.

The Intouchables is a crowd pleaser; an honest and thought provoking story that tugs at the heartstrings and soars on the performances by its leads. It’s no surprise Harvey Weinstein has already lined it up for an American remake.

A cute quirky french film. A bit too cheesy in parts (classic french film storyline of grumpy older man befriends struggling streetkid/refugee etc, who in turn rescues the old guy) but worth watching.

What a brilliant movie! Best I've seen in a long time. You'll be doing yourself a disservice if you let the sub-titles scare you off.

A delightful movie based on a true story. Charmed as we saw it unfold. If the Disability Scheme has to be helped by an addition to the Medicare Levy in the next Budget we should not have a problem with that if this experience could be had by all regardless of personal wealth.

Best movie i have seen in a long time. The whole family enjoyed it.I was hesitant in watching as it had subtitles- but i cannot recommend this highly enough. The connection between the two leading actors is just fantastic , i don't think hollywood should waste it's time in trying to replicate the original. It goes to show you that great movies don't have to big budget hollywood productions to be great movies

This an enjoyable and a pretty good movie but I was expecting a greater film considering all the hype. Definitely worth watching. Maybe 4 star but not quite as it is not a masterpiece.

I don't usually go for subtitled movies - but from the start I was hooked. I loved Omar Sy's character, loved to watch him dance, loved his checkiness. Knowing that it was based on a true story, made it all more enjoyable. Loved it.

Simply extraordinary. The music, the performances, the script... this is not the sort of movie I'd normally go for, but it's probably the funniest, most uplifting film I've seen in the past year. Not just worth watching -- worth buying!

What a wonderful feel good movie. I was a bit worried when I saw it was all in French but the subtitles were very easy to read and certainly didn't detract from the story. I would highly recommend this film, it is just beautiful.

Rather disappointing for such a hyped movie, as not a lot happens. While the characters are endearing to a degree they are also annoying for a variety of reasons, including severe stereotyping. There's a host of minor events through the movie that are left hanging; some are resolved in the last few scenes, while others are just left as loose ends.

Quite funny, great French film, good acting. As a French I had a great laugh but was afraid the humor will not please people who aren't in touch with the French pop culture. Apparently I was wrong when I see the other reviews. Well deserving!

Note: Subtitles. Enjoyable nights entertainment. Well acted especially Omar Sy very charasmatic character. A film about trust and honesty, and looking at the world via the vastly different eyes of the two main charracters. The 'have nots' meet the 'haves' and learn off each other. Some of the minor characters are a bit shallow and could have been developed more but I suppose the main theme was just about 2 people. Based on a true story. Maintains your interest highly Recommended
