Story of a tramp, told in flashbacks. Only small part shows his life in Alaska. Not as good as we hoped, but still worth viewing. Seeing money being burn was painful to watch, goes against the prevailing culture.
This wasn't as good as we hoped - have seen better on the TV show I Shouldn't Be Alive.
This is really an excellent movie. A true story and tragic but gives an incite into the traumas of some young people and what makes them act the way they do.
Wow. What a surprise this was. A real wake up call of how we ignore the simple pleasures. If you love your luxuries in life though, you'll probably hate this movie.
This is based on a true story about a restless self-absorbed young man who grew up in an unhappy household. He embarks on the classic hippy journey: give away all of your possessions and head off with no real plans. It is also a journey to find the meaning of life, though this is not overdone. Alex, the central character, states: the core of man's spirit comes from new experiences, and he constantly moves on even when he meets people who care for him. This casting off of western society's shackles is something that most people have considered at some time or other, and makes for a compelling thoughtful movie.
Beautiful, moving film, wonderful cinematography. Like Damit, wished I'd seen it on the big screen. The interior life fully lived in the external world. Ideals from almost another era. From robyn
Wow this was a great story was close to home, I'm glad I saw it, a lost sole not happy with the busy Life style and hustle and bustle of today's society. Something my brother always said he was going to do. And what beautiful countryside.
I really enjoyed this movie. The music and cinematography are beautiful, and you get to see a lot of the American countryside. I would like to read the book to hear some more about Chris' motivation in going off the grid. The ending is sad, but I did not find it over the top. Recommended.
amazing story and very inspiring in many ways
It is a great movie to watch, based on true story.
There is also a great moral behind it. It has a sad end, but you need to draw a lesson of life out of it.
Brilliant. Loved the cinematography and the soundtrack is superb. Wished i had seen it on the big screen.
not too bad! if you like a long drawn out adventure story, was worth watching but would have been better of a watch had we known it was true story.
Although the acting in this was a little overdone at times, the overall effect was interesting, and even a little inspiring. The real-life photo of Chris sitting beside the bus was quite powerful. The final scene was very moving, too.
Great movie, I loved it. Although, the end was sad.
Quite good, not what I was expecting.
Bit deep and meaningful. Not for light entertainment. However, well filmed and acted.
My daughter recommended this movie and although the ending is sad, I enjoyed this movie alot. The scenery is breathtaking. I haven't changed my opinion of Kristen Stewert, She is a shocking actress!!!
Quite a strange movie, but not bad all the same. I didn't realise until I was about half way through that it was based on a true story. Not sure how true to the story it is. I kinda felt a bit angy with this young fella for breaking his parents hearts, but I guess he was just following his dream..... The scenery is absolutely magnificent, definitely worth a watch even for this. I agree with the people who say it stays with you for a period of time after you watch it....!
Wow !! What a movie. Some would say long & slow, but we were captivated throughtout. Strong story worth watching. This is one of those movies that starts in the middle but returns to the beginning to explain events to the middle, and bounces between the beginning and the middle progressing the story to the finale. I can't believe I had a baby the exact day Chris (aka Alexander) died and watched this movie 19yrs to almost the exact day of his death.
This is a beautifully made film, but I truly wish I had never watched it. The stupidity and waste it depicts is highly distressing. A young man, born with the sort of privileges most people in the world cannot even imagine, just throws it all away. It's one thing to live a life that spurns materialism, to travel and discover and learn, to celebrate the beauty of nature. It's quite another to be a complete fool while going about it. To deliberately put family members through heartbreak and agony. To be so, so self-centered. Penn supposedly avoids judging the subject of his film. But given that the movie is almost entirely told from his point of view, it cannot help but promote his utter selfishness as something brave and enlightened. Leaves a bad taste in the mouth (joke for those who have seen the pic).
An excellent movie, a young guy splitting from parents on a journey into the unknown hiking to alaska, I remembered half way through that I had seen before but is worth watching, good family movie
Very introspective and beautiful quotations to remind for life
Loved this movie - was a really moving, thought provoking and sad story. Great for a directorial debut!
Thought provoking film that has lovely scenes and a young mans story unfolds before your eyes.
I first saw the preview for this film when it first came out. I heard that Eddie Vedder did alot of the music for the film and thought it might be worth watching if only for the music.
I was pleasantly surprised and engaged throughout the whole movie and recommend it for anyone interested in true stories!
Great from beginning to end!
Wonderful. I didn't realise this was based on a true story until the very end. What the young guy did felt very selfish though and this was beautifully reflected by his sister's monologue
A thought provoking journey through life which shows so many complexities of the human spirit - triumphant but tragic, brilliant but stupid, selfish but thoughtful. This movie will remain with me for a very long time.
A meaningful movie for those that seek more than just light entertainment. Occasionally one comes across a seemingly ordinary movie that can touch the soul and leaves one with a profoundly new perspective on life. This is a movie which one might gloss over and feel disappointed because it didn't entertain with its intricate storyline. But for those who give it their attention, who seek to understand and who commit to follow the story, a moving and deeply thought provoking tale unfolds. The storyline does has 3 levels and at first challenges one's ability to follow (it became so much clearer, and the flow more intuitive, on a second screening), but if you do persevere, a truly rewarding emotional journey awaits. While the central character's life depicted may be nothing new, the sensitivity and skill used to relate to his quest challengers our contemporary view of the world and leaves one with a new understanding of a life both inspiring and tragic. The ending is sombre and sad, but does provide an impact that leaves the story in your mind long after viewing.
This is an incredibly thought provoking film. Time and time again it has come up in discussions on all sorts of matters. Highly recommend it to all and sundry.
Well this movie was a waste of time... No storyline.. It kept jumping in timeline. I couldn't keep up. Don't bother!
This movie was quite haunting, it stays with you long after you finish watching it. Only problem I had with it is that the only reason that his story is interesting is that he had documented it. Apart from that, really, he was the same as thousands and thousands of backpackers that do what he did. I don't feel he was particularly unique from that angle. But interesting none the less. Google him when you have finished watching - find out the REAL story!!!
I enjoyed this movie for the spectacular scenery and the peripheral characters. The rather simplistic central theme is seriously laboured, though.
Also, I found the protagonist a bit annoying.
A bit odd. Very hard to get into and the ending is quite disappointing. Could be better.
what a great movie it just goes to show you don't always need money or possesions to be happy he happily gave it all up for something that he really wanted to do, very much reccomended it's a shame it ended like it did.
Very intense, but a great story and some great acting by Emile Hirsch, I'm going to go and buy the book!
Dreadful, waste of a life.
I am pretty sure I had not chosen this one. So we it came I wasn't really hyped to watch it. Someone encouraged me to give it a go. I hadn't really read the brief and the picture on the cover I had only glanced at. Ten minutes into the movie I remembered the story. That I like non-fiction had me paying attention for the rest of the movie. It is a very good movie and was an excellent book. I'd have given it five stars if it had been closer to the book (which I believe to have been quite factual).
It's your turn to get this one out, but if your not familiar with Henry David Thoreau's writings make sure you at least do a wiki on him to see at least partly what drove him so. After you have watched it make sure you leave your 4wd, phone and ipod and get into outdoors -
- to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life...to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner…. (Thoreau)
absolutely enthralling movie, committment to the enth degree. On par with the likes of Gallipoli
After 10 pages of members reviews I think it's all been said, and I agree with the review by "Dooglebottom" that if it hadn't been for Christopher McCandless's inexperience and not knowing that the river may be swollen by melted snows, his death was very sad and needless. Having said that, a brilliant film in many ways. Sean Penn as a director continues to impress me. Beautiful scenic photography, good performance by Emile Hirsch who played Christopher. It is a thought provoking and very poignant film.
WOW. This movie packs a punch. I have had an emotional hangover from this film for days. It's such an interesting concept. I cannot help but admire the kid for following what felt right to him. The sorrow inspired by his disillusionment, but also his enlightenment, will move you. At least it did me.
A truly amazing film right from beginning to end. It certainly was thought provoking.Highly recommended!!
I found this movie to be a story of inspiration, but also sadness. There was a tremendous loss when this talented young man died.So mature for his young years. The movie was long, but very thought inspiring.
A credit to Sean Penn, this was obviously well researched. A very powerful story.
I did enjoy this movie however I felt it went on too long, love a true story.
A tragic true story beautifully told. Just breath-taking in so many ways!
Surprisingly wonderful movie, highly recommend it. Emile Hirsh is as always very watchable and a terrific actor and his character's story takes you on an inspiring journey. Sean Penn does a great job as a director.
Depicts the exploits of Christopher McCandless AKA Alex Supertramp. The film presents a somewhat romanticised version of events but it's not excessive. The acting is good, the scenery stunning and the events interesting. The film doesn't present events in chronological order which I found a little confusing.
Certainly Emile Hirsch gave a very good performance but overall I feel that the movie did not meet my expectations. Yes it was a good account of a real life story and the movie had the feel of an un edited family movie- important to the family but too long for the rest of us.
When I first saw the movie I checked the box- was it made in the 60s as the same themes ran through this that were so prominent in the 60s 70s? That part I liked as there was a theme about idealism, something forgotten in the modern cyberage with instant me now culture that prevades every aspect of our lives.
Oh dear... a lost soul for ever.
Superb. One of the best movies I have seen for a while. Emile Hirsch's performance is excellent as I found myself emotionally invested in his character.
wonderful movie. what a lesson in the importance of family bonding. its still in my mind . gives a person a feel for the family and friends left wondering about loved ones who choose to drop out of their lives with no apparent concern for how they might cope. Amazing self reliance on behalf of McCandless and a great lesson to all, . beware when you go eating native plants.
A beautiful and moving memorial to a young life - thankyou to Sean Penn for persisting and the the family for allowing us into your son's life.
Fantastic movie!! Found this movie very moving and thought provoking. Sean Pean did a wonderful job and the scenery and people almost make you want to get out there and do it yourself.
A very good story based on a true story. The photo at the end of the movie depicting the real person who the story is based on is haunting.
There is some rather glib new-age philosophy that runs throughout this film, tethered to "wanderlust", as the protagonists goes through an inner journey whilst at the same time journeying through the physical world. I was in a really receptive mood for this story, and even though the metaphysics and quotes were nothing new, somehow they hit a special nerve, so I really enjoyed this film. It stayed with me for days
A good movie...very long. Worth watching but definitely not a feel good movie. Will keep you thinking afterwards.
another true story that shines, absolutely awesome, from the scenery to the way the story was told the characters we meet, the lives it touched, rent this movie !!!!!, also another one where you need to look up the true story, as the end did'nt depict it very well, cant say anytihng without ruining it, but consider this, if you convince yourself of something that is not true could still you suffer severe consquences of it ?
A very well made movie. As a parent I found it to be quite disturbing, which reflects the quality of the movie.
A silly film about a silly boy. Shows just how stupid some people can be.
This is a very personal film, one that's inceddibly moving and entertaining. Rarely do we meet people in life who have the courage that this guy had to be ture to himself.
One of the best movies I have seen.
Fantastic film based on a true story, teaching us about our own lives and the way we are trying to live them. Actors do a fantastic job.
Recommended for everyone.
Good film that in my perception was about the importance of relationships in ones life. Worth watching, although its slightly slow moving. Good message worth a reccomendation.
I loved this movie. I wasn't sure how I would enjoy the movie when reading the blurb and watching the opening scenes. It seemed like such an absurd thing to do, but as the movie progresses and you gain insight into Christopher's life, it draws you in. It's the kind of movie that plays through your mind after it's finished and had a beautfiul theme to it.
This is a movie which you could debate all night. Was Christopher McCandless a brave free spirit or a thoughtless selfish idiot. It's left up to you to decide and I thank Sean Penn for not preaching. Emile Hersh is a charismatic lead with great support Kristen Stewart, Catherine Keener and Hal Holbrook. In fact where he meets up with all those itinerant travellers are the best parts of the film. When he's alone and in the wild he seems so incredibly self obsessed. The book was better however so read this first.
Could not finish the movie as it had freeze problems
and was not able to get out
I loved this. Left me pondering the life of Chris McCandless long after it ended. Fab work by Sean Penn and a great cast!
Inspirational true story. Really makes you wonder where modern society's values lie.
Can't fault it at all. Everything about this movie is beautiful!
A beautiful movie that captures a young man's anguish and youthful enthusiasm with natural ease. The film is beautifully photographed and very well paced. By the end of the film we are heavily invested in the main character and I found myself wondering what might have been.
Probably one of the best movies i have seen this year.
Some might call the main character dumb for burning his last money and living in the lonely wilderness of Alaska and those unfortunately will never understand the point of this movie. But for others it represents unbelievable courage to leave our "society" and and all your belongings behind to find something greater. The fact that this movie/book is based on a true story makes it even better.
A little slow, one is left considering whether the boy is just irresponsible or truely living the dream
Quite a thought provoking movie asking a lot of questions about society and how we act like puppets in this consumerism world of greed.
This boy suffered no hardships in his life but rejects his parents whose biggest crime is to offer him a car at graduation and argue with each other. Yet it seems that while on the road while rejecting the material things in life he is not adverse to taking from others. It was a slow movie and I had at least hoped for a visual feast but I was disappointed there as well.
A pretty good, though somewhat remanticised version, of a 'find yourself' movie. Based on a true story and a pretty good adaptation
Memorable movie. Slow towards the end. Very well made and acted. Makes you think.
This goes in my top 5 movies of all time for it's brilliant and moving script, direction, acting and soundtrack. A reminder in these days of rampant consumerism that there is beauty in the simple things and that there are greater tragedies in life than death.
This film was beautifully done. True to the book and yet more sympathetic to the Supertramp which made it even better. It is not often you find a film being better than the book however I think that this one was. The scenery is magnificent. Sean Penn is a man of many talents!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. A not to be missed experience. Bring lots of tissues ... emotional, touching, insightful, all encompassing. Wouldn't have missed this for anything. Be sure to addthis to your queue!!
A very thought provoking movie, what an extraordinary young man, perhaps there is truth in the saying 'only the good die young".
A young man determined to waste his life..great acting..great scenery..great research..pity I knew the ending as it is based on a true story....watch this..u will love it..a 9/10
You dont have to slam doors to appreciate beauty in the world...oh well 'no harm done' but not alot gained either.
What could have been a very dull story is instead an absorbing tale of interaction with a variety of characters, each with their own true-to-life tales of life?s trials and tribulations. The movie is quite long, so it is just as well that it manages to keep being interesting.
This is a deep and moving film that most people will enjoy. It is hard to write a short review because there are so many elements involved in the film. The reasons young adults may leave home....and why they may not make contact with their families again. Alexander Supertramp related well to people...the hippy couple and the older man...so while not being a loner...he certainly knew what he wanted for his own life. This film will stay with you for a long while.
Deep impact! I was still thinking about last night’s viewing of Sean Penn’s fascinating docudrama about Chris McCandless’s fleeting life this morning when I woke up. As a would-be outdoorsman and back to nature inhabitant strongly influenced by the writings of Jack London and Henry Thoreau, I admire Chris’s commitment to an ideal, but not with his means of achieving it. His amateurish poorly prepared plan to survive in Alaska’s harsh environment cost him his life, but not before his “on the road” adventures bond him with slightly off-beat characters. Using flashbacks of our hero’s odyssey with spectacular outdoor photography, and terrific acting, sparse but insightful commentary and snippets of diary entries, this one really grabbed me.
Gorgeous cinematography and well acted. However this movie is rather slow going and had a docu feel about it. Not a movie to watch if you're tired, you may end up falling asleep.
Had to skip to the end as my copy was bad, but as Adriaan previously mentioned, the portrait at the end was very effective and the similarity between Emile and John was eerie. Emile was fantastic (as always) here. Could very much envision what it was like for the 'supertramp'.
A fascinating story and movie that is very moving. The performances are great, particularly Emile Hirsch. See Adrian van Jaarsveldt's review below - I couldn't put it better!
Had too watch this one twice to really appreciate it. Excellent photography. What an unusual chap.
This one was a big let down. The guy wasn't too bright embarking on the journey by himself and not asking the locals about the weather and the terrain.
A sad story, even more depressing was that it was based on a true story. :-( At least he got to Alaska.
Think twice about daring to be different just for the sake of going against the grain.
loved it. not much more to be said. i went in with very little knowledge and no expectations and was completely carried away. visually stunning, and it has stayed with me. definitely worth seeing
A great movie, visually fascinating, the people he meets along the way are interesting. Just a great story, and I didn't even realise till the end it was based on a true story.
Don't read the review below unless you want the ending revealed!!!
I couldn't sleep after watching this. I thought about the "I had a good life" note...but what angst his poor parents went through not knowing where he was ot whether he was dead or alive. It just seemed such irony that he planned to leave and return to "society" and was unable to...and that the only visitors to the area where the "Magic Bus" was came 2 weeks too late. I found it very upsetting and disturbing, and kind of pointless.
I loved this movie. It was an inspiration, both the character it was based on and the actor who played him. The soundtrack was fantastic.
This is a truly amazing film - beautifully written - beatifully filmed - and beautifully acted. The ultimate outcome all the more sad in view of the effect this young man had on so many lives throughout his journey - and not least his family - and giving some insight into the effects of a "missing person" on them. His sister's narrative was truly moving. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! in every way.
Great acting in this movie, but I wonder at this young mans' stubbon stupidy, which ultimately cost him his life. I felt compassion for his sad death, but anger for his mindless determination.
A wounderfull story of the love and trust between dogs and humans. It seems almost impossible that huskies can survive on their own for 150+ days.
Wow what an incredible story!
Loved every minute of it.
Really great movie, one the best 'based on a true story' movie I've seen in quite a while. It was a really moving story of the tragic end to a young life. I liked how the movie moved from the past to the present and tying the whole tragic story together.
A complex film about lost youth seeking an Ideal or is it an escape? In the end he comes across as foolish and naive. Well acted but not as involving as it should be given the subject matter.
A wonderful movie. I shall never forget the acting, the events that led this special young man to the climax of his life. Marvelous scenery! Such a serendipity in the usual run of movie genre. Reccommend this movie to all who are a little more thoughtful than the rest.
I was initially a little disappointed with the movie, it seemed rather long - and while interesting, somewhat mundane.
But I was shocked by the ending - it made sense (sort of) of the whole story - and even more interesting once I realised it was a true story! This point appears to have been left out of the storyline on the Web and on the back cover?
This was true - watch it in that light and I think you'll love it.
Great that he had the guts to do what he did, but the fact that he never contacted his family to at least let them know he was alive and well left me cold. He must have hated them a lot to do that, despite what his sister says in the film. Also, the killing of the moose was gross! I was surprised that someone who was supposed to be so in tune with nature wasn't a vegetarian. In the end a free spirit and a young life ended tragically with a simple mistake. Worth a look.
I didnt really get this movie but the last 30 minutes were pretty powerful and didnt expect it to end the way it did. Pretty amazing story from an amazing person. Was very slow in parts but it was worth the wait
There was nothing about this movie that didn't touch me - totally awesome. Sean Penn has found his calling! Stunning, stunning, stunning!
i imagined this would be a good film from the trailer, but with the beautiful script, poetry and music added into the mix, and young hottie Emile Hirsh stealing every scene, it turns out to be one of the best movies of the year.
It took a little while to fully get my interest, but I persevered and really enjoyed it. A movie you think about for a while after. Beautiful scenery.
Brilliant direction from Sean Penn ensures this story doesn't descend into the usual Hollywood sentimentality. A compelling story of the search for authenticity beautifully acted.
Brilliant acting and fantasic scenery but such a frustrating (true) story. What a sad waste of life not to mention the incredible selfishness of McCandess. Movie absolutely worthwhile viewing as it has some wonderful substories and beautiful characters.
Whether you are inspired by this story to cast off the bonds of society, or you think McCandless was a selfish little turd, there is still much to recommend in this movie.
Absolutely BORING!!! Fell asleep throughout the whole movie. Not my kind of movie at all.
Slow and over-indulgent with the expectations of this audience.
Excellent film based on a true story about a guy who wants to live his life his way. Well acted by Emile Hirsch & others with a touching cameo by Hal Holbrook. A little long & direction a bit patchy but Sean Penn shows that he can shine on both sides of the camera.
Much better than I expected.
Thought provoking, clever and unique. Highly recommended, but maybe not if you are feeling a bit low...
Quite good but slow in parts.
Excellent story and well told and acted but in the end a harrowing experience
Brilliant.Moving, powerful and emotional. The journey of your life awaits in this film.
Not what I expected, pretty boring.
Excellent movie, but a tough story of family disfunctionality, and of survival in the wild. Definitely worth watching
Very good, watchable movie, emile is very good again.
It's a bit long though.
One mans journey that gets you in from the start and keeps you there right till the end!,very good.
Not my type of movie, a bit slow.
Excellent movie, stunning scenery and a moving story
Sad attempt at being arty...lack of story line
A really interesting story. But the movie did it no justice. It was really slow and jumped all over the place. Would have prefered a straight telliing of the story.
Don't you wish you could just give up everything and be totally free, free from what society tells us we must do and how we must live in this greedy and selfish capital world. What great courage it takes to give it all up, a privileged lifestyle with financial security. An experience you will never forget and truly a tragic ending for a brave man who loved life to the full. Critiics would say how stupid, but if you never tried it how stupid are you! What great qualities, freedom, bravery and spirit he possessed, unfortunately ended in tragedy. Sean Penn captured the beauty of this story, the gentle soul of this young man against some of the most breathtaking wilderness you could ever walk. Truly inspiring.
Masterpiece! A superb turn by Emile Hirsch and Hal Holbrook's brief appearance is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Beautifully shot, terrific story and amazing music from Eddie vedder. Fantastic.
Just loved this beautiful and very moving film.
This has been pretty widely criticised as an exercise in glorifying a stupid person's story. I first saw the trailer at the cinema last year and thought, "what a dumb sounding guy." But after seeing the movie and reading through pieces of the book it came from, a beautiful story unfolds about a young man finding himself. "Inspirational" is a word thrown around to describe these kind of life-affirming movies, but Into the Wild really deserves the title. It'll hopefully make you think about your life, your experiences and where you find your own brand of happiness.
This story will stay with me a while.
An absolutely beautiful movie that stays with you long after the lights come back on. The movie was at times uplifting, charming, baffling and devastating. It was beautifully shot and cleverly paced, slipping between the past and present effortlessly. Sean Penn proves that he's not only one of the best actors of his generation but a talented writer and director too.
This movie is flawless, inspiring and a true pleasure to watch, once of those movies you can enjoy just as much the second time around.
As I was watched this the story and ultimate plight of young John McCandless (or Alexander Supertramp as he renames himself) left me somewhat cold. What an incredibly dumb thing to do, I thought. And the rambling travel and adventure that led up to his last days in a deserted old bus in the middle of the Alaskan wilds, seemed to me just as pointless as his end. But perhaps, in hindsight, I was feeling grouchy and tired at the end of a long day (I watched this on a flight home to Sydney from New Zealand), because as time has gone by I feel much better about this movie. McCandless story has stuck with me and his philosophy and uncompromising stance has made me think, which is after all what good movies are supposed to do. The self-portrait of the actual McCandless at the end of the film made me sit up and pay closer attention. Here is a true story which in all likelihood has been reconstructed with remarkable accuracy. I understand Sean Penn took great pains over interviewing the characters that crossed McCandless life in the period portrayed here. Emile Hirsch gives a completely committed performance and literally wastes away before our eyes.
