The spooking

The success of Paranormal Activity really did revitalise the horror genre. First of all, it proved that you don’t need a big budget to craft an incredibly intense and genuinely enjoyable film experience. How could Hollywood continue to justify their unscary onslaught of toothless remakes and less and less profitable torture pornos? PA director Oren Peli – with just $15,000, a couple of craigslist sourced actors and a single camera stationed on a tripod – spooked audiences to the tune of $193 million worldwide. James Wan’s Insidious (produced by Peli) will also be able to claim similar returns. Made for only $1.5 million, it’s already grossed more than 30 times its production budget. I know, I know, the financial triumph of a film has no place in a review of its quality. But when it comes ...

But when it comes to Peli’s productions, it's worth addressing. Paranormal Activity also proved that a movie  should never be critiqued according to its budget; if we were going to applaud an ultra-cheap film for being able to compete – both in terms of quality and monetary success – with the big boys, then we could no longer give them a free pass for their failings. Paranormal Activity wasn’t “good for a $15,000 movie”; it was just plain good (great, really). Insidious however - despite having some fun tricks up its sleeve and a few genuinely scary scenes - is just a bit too silly to take seriously, and too grim to call fun. The problem is not that the film looks cheaply made (because it doesn’t); it’s that the direction is so joyless, and Leigh Whannel’s script too often betrays its characters. This is not the rollicking rollercoaster frightfest Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 were, nor is it a playful genre throwback like Drag Me To Hell, or even a touching family film like Poltergeist (which Insidious apes most). There is no such thing as “good for $1.5 million” movies; there is only “movies” and Insidious isn’t a very good one.

Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson (excellent actors elevating the material) star as married couple Renai and Josh; mother and father to Dalton (Ty Simpkins), Foster (Andrew Astor) and a baby that probably had a name, but I can’t remember it being mentioned, and can’t find it listed on IMDB (we film reviewers are human too!). Renai has been having a hard time of late – references to postpartum depression are alluded to yet never explicitly mentioned – so she’s quit her job, and the family has moved house to shake things up a bit. Dalton ventures into the attic and sees … something; something that sends him into a mysterious coma.  Three months of inaction later, Josh and Renai bring their comatose son back from the hospital and set him up in his bedroom. Almost immediately, they begin to witness some ghostly goings on in their manor. At first they’re subtle, but eventually they evolve into full blown “specter walking round the house” type hauntings. I’ll give Renai and Josh credit; unlike so many before them, when the terror gets real (blood on the bed sheets, alarms going off) they move out immediately. The horror follows them to their new house however, and Josh’s mother (Barbara Hershey) suggests they call in paranormal expert Elise (Lin Shaye) and her two associates Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) for an explanation.

Although the premise is actually rather novel – and the eventual explanation of the source of the scariness is certainly unique –  the execution is severely lacking. Wan, best known for directing Saw and establishing the series’ visual style, takes as inspiration not the fast motion torture sequences from his directorial debut, but rather the first Saw’s best scene: Adam (also Whannell) tentatively wandering around a darkened apartment, using the flash of his camera to intermittently light his way. Wan plays with darkness often and effectively. He sets up intriguing sequences, builds our tension … and then squanders it. Scenes end abruptly – not scarily, abruptly - leaving us to scratch our heads over what we've just witnessed. Perhaps the blame should be equally distributed to Whannell, who allows characters to disappear for long stretches of time without explanation (Foster and the unnamed baby are literally absent for the film’s final 45 minutes, which merely proves they are plot devices). Even Byrne, who is established as the film’s anchor in the first act, is completely dismissed in the finale. She is given absolutely nothing to do except look concerned. Also, the comic-relief double act of Tucker and Specs seems so out of place in the unrelenting bleakness of the scenario established here (although the Recovery reunion was welcome).

2.5/5

Didn't like it. Not much of a build-up to the climax. The viewer was just sort of thrown in from the start with not much context.

A well crafted re-working of Poltergeist that’s well acted by all, smooth direction with creepy suspense and some good jump scenes. Light on the violence and leans more towards the creepy then gory with a building feeling of dread. My only gripes are the Twist at the end is too obvious and When they played Tip Toe through the tulips its more strange then creepy and would had worked better if they played it off key to reflect the creature playing it from Ordinary to a more sinister version but these flaws are forgivable and its def worth a rental for those into more scary and less gory horror films.

Good spooky movie and the music definately fitted in quite well. A number of times i jumped which for me signifys quite a tense triller. I have to agree with another reviewer here with the song tiptoe through the tulips, i'm certainly going to get goosebumps when i hear that song. i know the ghostbusters were a little corny however for me that broke the suspense and made me laugh. Overall I really enjoyed the movie, good thriller and not the same old horror movie.

After verbal recommendation I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting more. It is quite a creepy film though. Nice to see Rose Byrne here.

Reminds me of Poltergeist, which I think is a much more memorable/cult film.

If you like scary movies, then this is worth seeing. I would give it 6 & a half or 7 out of ten on the spooky scale.

This is obviously a horror by numbers film and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Brings to mind Poltergeist, only not as cool.

The overwrought opening credits complete with Dario Argento-esque theme music was the giveaway - Insidious was not going to a modern horror film but rather a slightly tongue-in-cheek homage to the hokey fright films of the 60 and 70's, hopefully with a few modern twists thrown in. And so it proved to be, with director Wan rounding up all the usual scarey subjects - a supposedly haunted house, cute all-American family, assorted unexplained happenings and a rising sense of dread. The problem for Insidious is that walking the line between smug parody and being a genuine scare-fest is a difficult task. And it's one that neither the director or the solid cast (Wilson is always good, Byrne is good but underwritten here) can ultimately pull off. The end result is an odd mish-mash - a not particularly funny black comedy and a horror film that's not especially frightening.

All was going fine in the movie, you know, kept on the edge of my seat and starting to get the thrill that only a good horror can give then......in came the ghost busters and that spoilt it for me. The whole movie turned tacky and unbelievable after that point. Still a few more scares to be had after that though after their arrival but it brought the movie down. And why didn't the husband's mother step in earlier if she knew all this??? Would've been more credible if the gift that the boys father had was slowly worked into the film through suggestive scenes rather than spelt out to us. But the acting by the boy"s parents was superb, with the mother, the Australian Rose Byrne, being exceptionally good. And I wasn't bored....

Something NEW in a genre that has been done to death. Provides some good "jumpy" moments and the clever use of Tiny Tim's "Tiptoe through the tulips" will ensure I can never hear that song without getting a shiver down my spine. Overall a very entertaining movie for fans of the horror/supernatural genre - although the "twist" at the end was obvious and not suprising in the least.

Not a movie I would watch again. It turns into a paranormal thriller with a boy's spiritual being becoming trapped in another dimension due to his astral travels through the night. His dad has to rescue him and a spiritual guide is called upon to help. You can imagine how it ends.

Starts off well, really freaky, especially the music (violin music and tip toe through the tulips song!)! but unfortunately kinda loses the plot after 30 minutes or so. not the worst horror movie I've seen and definitely not the best, but it was kinda entertaining. there is some interesting extras too.

A bit daft. Had it's scary moments but just got way too far fetched and over complicated. Interesting watching the bonus material with the writers talking about the horror genres... but that was the most interesting part.

This is one of the better horror movies. I thought that nothing new can be said in the "ghost story" subject, but this movie proves otherwise. Better the Paranormal Activity if you ask me.

Wow! One of the best horror flicks I have seen in years. Most of the horror movies these days end up being laughable, but this movie truely frightens!! No gore, just good old fashioned heart stopping scares. I watched this with my teen daughter who also said it was one of the best movies she had seen this year as well as best horror flick. She ended up so spooked she slept with me for the night!!

A fairly compelling horror flick with a great cast. The entities needed a second viewing and the explanation of the director to be fully understood. The ending (like any flick with a follow up version plaaned) was too abrupt.

Better than Paranormal Activity, yet is predictably paced, character definition is poor, motives are mind boggling even for a horror film. Had it's moments.

When I first got this DVD I was thinking "this will be another bad modern horror movie." Then I saw it and had a heart attack for 2/3's of the movie. Very good suspense and terrifying things, also a great story and amazing ending. Unfortunately bad acting and unrealistic ages for the mother and father (about in their late 20's with a 7 year old son) made this movie worse, but other than that, 3.5 stars.

Not knowing the cast of this one I wasn't sure but now very pleased I had requested it. It started off as the usual 'haunted house' scenerio but very quickly takes an unusual turn into the realm of astro travel, soon found I was sitting on the edge of my seat and certainly wasn't expecting the surprise ending. An excellent movie if you like a thriller into the supernatural.

By far one of the best Thrillers of all time, the first bit of the movie you kind of feel that you have been along this storyline before, but as the story unfolds a deaper more thrilling ride of the imagination unfolds. As unreal this is you are sucked into believing each suspense moment right to the end where you are left on the edge of your seat....... truely thrilling !
