A bit blood thirsty for the squeamish but some very funny moments and great acting.
Tarantino Strikes again!
Although perhaps one of the most inaccurate films found out there about WWII, it was a true cult classic!
Cruel humor and ridiculous violence,
Recipe for a 5 star Tarantino flick.
A strange movie about the screening of a Nazi propaganda movie. There is the usual brutal Tarantino violence, but each violent act only goes for a few seconds- the rest of the movie is dialogue driven. The film was inconsistent in its mood: sometimes reflective; sometimes zany; sometimes comic; sometimes gory; etc. All of the charcters were overdrawn, probably intentionally, but this made the final product quite ridiculous at times. This is a war movie with a difference.
Would have given it 5 stars if the DVD wasn't faulty. When I paused it it wouldn't restart and I had to go back to the menu and advance through the scenes. Great acting and action if you like WWII movies.
Should have know better with Tarantino as the director, so much violence throughout the entire film, the scalpings & baseball bat scene left me speechless!
Typical Tarantino movie over the top but very entertaining.Great performances by all.
Movie was okay but I expected more. The movie would have been better if it had been longer. Liked the ending but perhaps they should have stuck to history and explored that more - afterall most of the Nazis escaped to America and USSR, with theories that Hitler actually escaped and his "double" was actually found in his bunker.
Though "Inglorious Bastards: is obviously a send up on Hitler and his war machine it's a real winner. Once again the oppressed wins over the oppressor in spectacular fashion. As for Brad Pitt's team sending shivers up the spines of the Arians it's good to see them being very afraid
I Loved this movie! Another awesome release from Tarantino. As usual it had its quintessential Tarantino quirks such as his typical cameo apearence (see if you can spot him) and also a reference to his fetish for the female foot! Brad Pitt was at his usual best but also faced stiff competition from all of the cast members who where equally as good. I highly recommend this movie.
N.B. - See if you can also see the original 70's B grade War-Ploitation version of this movie, it is quite different from Tarantino version.
I think I now suffer from anxiety after watching this. Too much unnecessary violence. I think my grandfathers who fought in WW2 for our country, would be rolling in their graves. Quite offensive!
If only they had these type of squads during the real second world war...there would be less immigration to Brazil or Argentina after the war. Great Movie.
Usual Tarantino film with all the quirkiness and violence you would expect from his films. This one fell a bit flat for me - maybe the subject matter didn't interest me enough - was all a bit 'meh' - take it or leave it.
can not watch this movie,,,it was very faulty.
If you're easily offended or looking for an accurate WWII film, stay away from this. Tarantino's film is a piece of historical fiction that depicts many aspects of the war from the point of view of civilians whilst being totally bad*** and is knowingly plays with the truth of real events. If you want to see an awesome, well written and original war film then watch this one. It's not everyone's type of movie, but I LOVE it!
In the top 5 best war movies of all time.
Tarantino failed. Story-line too loose and random. Missed the mark on threading it all together so that the disparate ends came to a satisfactory conclusion. One cannot use past events as a plot-line and then just reinvent aspects of the past to justify a warped ending. Very unsatisfying and disappointing.
Was this some sort of weird wish fulfilment? "If I'd run the war a few guys from the good ol' USA would have beat those nazis in six months?" By scalping them individually? The usual Tarantio obsession with blood and death - the more torture the better apparently. An insult to the people who died and those who fought during a grinding six year war against an appalling enemy. I even prefer those bad US ''while we were winning the war for you we stopped to plunder art galleries' movies to this pathetic rewrite history fantasy.
I don't mind the gore in context, more realistic wounding and trauma in war movies might depict just how unglamorous it truly is, although until we can manage the stench, the noise and the feel of a battlefield in the cinema that's a small hope, but this movie was gratuitous nonsense. It could have done with serious editing, it was at least an hour too long for a terribly predictable story.
The one star is for the excellent performances by Waltz and Diehl.
OK - so I can see where all the great reviews are coming from - there was alot of thought that went into this one but I have to say it bombed for me. Yes, great acting but not a spectacular storyline, was way to much in this movie and I think there was alot of room for improvement in terms of drama. This is definately one of those movie you either love or hate.
This was very surprising as it was enjoyed by the entire family from 18 yr old to older adult. Graphic violence was not overdone and was entirely necessary for the storyline. Would recommend.
Weird story line but plenty of action.
Gratuitous and unnecessary violence. Pretty disturbing.
A truly entertaining fanciful twist on the ending of the World War. Briiliantly casted with all the twists and unexpected turns leading upto the brilliant climax. In true Quentin T style the film at times depicts violent situations with gruesome results but all in its stride as a war movie.
Gloriously dark, shocking and leaves you cheering the bravery of the Inglorious Bastards.
I don't like Inglourious Basterds because it is a shocking scene about swaskita on the forehead.
Thought it was an awesome story so gripping. But typical Tarantino movie, gory as anything which is a shame in a way because it was over the top.. Another thing that was hard to handle was Brad Pitts voice
Fabulous - great characters, terrific story.
One of the worst movies I have ever seen. A disgrace to the memory of the Jews in WW2. What were they thinking?
.......crikey! If only...
Very typical Tarantino, lots of dialogue and gore! The gore does get a bit out of hand at times, but the dialogue is fabulous, particularly Brad Pitt and Christopher Waltz as the arrogant Nazi hunter. It didn't drag for me and I enjoyed the characters.
This was my most disappointing dvd watched yet. Too many subtitles, wording too small on the small screen, had to strain to read. Felt too strained to watch whole movie. Movie plot seemed too thin, too violent, which caused me to turn it off.
Absolutely loved it - portrayed the way you would want it to be portrayed and then some. You wont be disappointed
Brad Pitt is appalling as the Southern Yank - his accent is terrible and the plot is very far fetched. Made me think that I would never watch another Brad movie.
Another cinematic masterpiece from the mastermind, loved it!
Wow, loved this movie, good story line, convincing acting and good specal effects...what more could you want for a Saturday night in?
The first star is for effort
I can't think of anyone who would like this film. The uniforms looked accurate. I fast forwarded through a lot and forgot to watch the end. Think it cost a lot to make, the salvos could have used that money. It was let down by the story. Some of the violence was cringworthy. Bowie's music was good
Anyone watching this and not expecting gore and blood has never seen a Tarantino movie. The cinematic use of the German and French language without subtitles was annoying and we ended up turning on the hearing impaired subtitles, so were treated to the written 'sound effects' too. A tad discombobulating. Very noisy, very gory - but also very talkfest. Wouldn't watch it again.
Another ho-hum war movie.....not too original!
Violence is almost comical and ending is predictable!
A farce of a movie...totally over-rated!
Awesome movie! Another job well done for Tarantino,
Tintin Quarantino does war. Brilliant. (nearly) Everyone dies by the end, which is as it should be in a war film, and of course Mr Kill Bill hyphen Pulp Fiction does it in ways that are bloody and obscene, which is as it should be in a war film.
Well done.
If you're a Tarantino Fan then this movie is A typical of his style of directing and for me was a very enjoyable movie. If you not a fan of Quentin Taratino's work you may find it a little lame and lacking in the story line.
All in all I loved it but Tarantino is my favourite director and it's just another addition to the Band Apart group of films, Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Resevoir Dogs to mention a few.
Gets the dawgie High Five from this lil black dog......
Not an enjoyable film. A lot of strong violence and very disjointed.
I found it a very gripping and tense movie. A very different role for Brad Pitt who managed to pull it off. The Nazi guy was the epitome of evil and quite freaky. Violent at times but also very funny. Overall a very enjoyable movie.
got sick of reading the sub titles
Tarrantino's appeal to me is more than unexpected shocking violence. It's his ability to make villans likeable both before and after we know they are beyond redemption. In this regard Christoph Waltz is delicious as the jew hunter. Also part of Tarrantino's arsenal is his use of language, with a good part of this film in French his dialogue flows naturally with tragic humour and an almost poetic pace. Most of all this is not an historic film. It would be fun to think of some year 10 student cramping this film for their WW2 report.
2 hours of my life that I won't get back.
This movie has Quenton Tarantino all over it, very different
Lots of guns and noise little storyline.
Very brutal, and I found the plot improbable. If Allied troops had behaved as badly as this lot, they would have been no better than the Nazis. I also found it quite ridiculous that a girl who escapes the Nazis from a farm in rural France turns out to be a Paris cinema-owner. The film does at least attempt to portray some Germans as 'normal', which only serves to make the brutality of the 'Basterds' worse.
Nup, pretty disappointing. I expected the violence but the lack of character and story development left me cold.
Very Tarantino. Quirky, black, comical revenge. We liked it.
A VERY FUNNY , MOVIE , VERY MUCH A TOUNGE IN CHEEK LOOK AT HOW WW2 MIGHT HAVE ENDED , A LITTLE GORY IN SPOTS ; TYPICAL TARANTINO . STILL WORTH THE WATCH.
I love all war films, but this wasn't one of the better ones. Maybe it was the Tarantino quirkiness or "it looks like Brad Pitt, but doesn't sound like him" thing? Dunno ! Can't praise highly.
Hated it , Hated it, Hated it. Don't like violence and felt this was just utter rubbish.
Had reasonably high hopes for this film but was disappointed overall. WWII where the Brits and French fail to stop Germany, thank god for the Americans... Acting was OK, storyline a bit all over the place. Unless you're a Pitt or Taraninto fan I wouldn't bother.
Unrealistic but entertaining
What a ghastly movie. Nothing but a blood bath, like all Tarantino's movies. That boy has a serious problem. Couldnt see the point of it all. Boring really
Certainly different but too weird and too violent for my liking. Lost me for a while during the middle. Okay if it's your sort of thing!
A curious attempt at cartoon style, spaghetti western WW2 story. Too gruesome to watch and subtitles terrible on a TV screen. Dialogue not convincing. I much preffered 'The long engagement', a Frnech film about WW1. Quentin could have done better.
first and last ten min great , in between average. Mostly in german and french with very small subtitles which flash acroos the screen way too fast to read. Prob best watched on the big screen
Brilliantly funny, unique, well crafted. Loved it.
I was very disappointed. I know I had to sustain my disbelief ... but in what universe does a dignitary show up for a function without even a hint of real security. It wasn't as though they were using a tiny bomb - but three hundred reels of flammable film - surely someone might have noticed. Pitt's acting - hmmmm... he's lost it.
What a great film! I don't want to give anything away, it's best to see it with no idea what to expect. Superb tension, hilarious moments, fantastic performances. Best film I've seen in ages.
This is essentially a Jew's wet dream. Brutal and disgusting. Whether you like Tarantino's style is one thing, but the underlying scenario is what is bothersome. It's obviously not meant to be historically accurate but when you have a bunch of Jews who go around committing atrocities on German countrymen (yes we're talking about the Wehrmacht here, not the SS), only the ignorant and sick will find it entertaining. Seeing soldiers, who are most likely just conscripts, getting scalped is disgusting. I don't care what happened in actual history, if you need to watch this to feel satisfied then you have serious problems. This is just a case of revenge, which is completely different to justice.
Tarantino back to form with a great cast on tap
Tarantino builds the tension around some amazing performances in this movie. At times a bit slow, and at times sadistic/sick, nonetheless you marvel how he manages to involve you in the intensity of his reboot of the Nazi/resistance subgenre. Brad Pitt is hilarious, the jew hunter beyond chilling in his urbanity.
Love this movie had to watch again
Classic Tarantino... but only if you like this sort of stuff
very well done, worth watching. faye
Didn't like it much. Besides being brutal it was very quirky and I didnt know if it was supposed to be a comedy or a drama.
quintin at his best again - nothing else to say very good film
This movie is on the surface, many longish conversations, in dispersed with moments of sheer violence. What got me in was the impending menace of all the conversations. You have a feeling that something brutal is about to occur, but you're not sure what it will be, and exactly when it will happen. The first long conversation in the farm house sets this up. Movie making at it's best, great script, great acting and great cinematography.
Not one of Tarantino's best.
Loved this one. Stunningly photographed and designed with an outstanding cast, this is great entertainment. The humour very black although I must admit I didn't particularly like the throat cutting, scalping or swastika carving. Terrific ending.
First 15 minutes were great thought this is going to be a good movie, then Brad Pitt opened his mouth that was the end the move took a nose dive and crashed and burned, it was just a load of rubbish would not recommend it at all.
Terrible movie! Wasn't expecting the gore
Fantastic black comedy. Dual story lines coming together intriguingly. The gore was not the least bit gratuitous but the perfect rage against Nazism to counteract the flippant humor. Very Turrantino. Very good!
I personally found this a very gruesome movie. Not for the fainthearted.
Outstanding effort once again by Tarantino. Classic stuff with a great twist at the end. As for the "I hated it " reviews, you probably hated Pulp Fiction as well.
I thought this film was very good. Quite humerous and "outrageous" really - a bit over the top, but enjoyable. The end was good, and not expected !
quite a good movie. it sort of jumps a bit storyline wise, but it isnt too bad
I thought this show was rubbish, too slow and Brad was very disappointing. don't bother renting it.
Found the sub-titles very hard to read but overall I enjoyed this movie
Did not know what to expect when i first sat down, but it did not take long to figure out that this was not going to be a comedy, even though there were some funny one liners they only set up what was coming next. Definitely not one for the kids, although could do wonders for the romantic side of your partner, if only so she can hide her eyes. tremendous acting by the two leads. Brad Pitt at his best, and the actor who played the SS oficer, extremely bent.( great characterisation) A large poetic licence taken at the end, but had to happen.
Classic Tarantino, bloody violent with a touch of twisted humour, not for everyone but if you like Tarantino this will be right up your alley,Brad Pitt is great as Aldo Raines and Eli Roth particularly menacing as the Nazi General
Good viewing - the violence is a bit over the top, though certainly not excessive in real terms. Brad Pitt is great as always in these offbeat kind of roles. Very long but it doesn't drag at all.
Sub-titles annoy me but with this movie worth battling through. Not a movie for the light-hearted; violence and blood-stained-pain presented in a believable way. Hard hitting and a good set up. The ending was tough, well done and may not sit easy with some.
Was it just me.... Could not "get into" this movie at all. Very slow, not Tarantino's best.
Enjoyed this movie, rather long at times but you just had to watch it. It was very interesting and kept you wanting to see what happens.
I expected a movie about the european resistance.
Not a movie that supposed to be funny.
Hence I did not found it funny at all!
some good moments, but overall a waste of my time
The shorts were the best part. I actually was getting bored watching it.
Good story line but it was too slow for me. I expected a bit more action from the Basterds.
Another fantastic trippy Quentin Tarentino movie, a bit hard to watch but great all in all
Parts of the film were brilliant, yet Brad Pitt's accent was irritating, as was is flat character. Christoph Waltz was the only character who had a rounded character, hence Best supporting actor Oscar. Weird soundtrack to a WW2 film. Just too weird too impress.
In true Quentin Tarantino style, very bloody yet very funny. The only downside was that I am not a fast reader and the subtitles seemed to whiz by. If you watch this movie and you are like me, make sure you are ready to press pause.
was ok but nothing new, except for the spelling of the title.
A typical Tarantino movie. Great action, great storyline and plenty of blood and guts.
Funny, imaginative, true Quentin Tarantino film.
BRILLIANT!!! A very clever alternative ending to WW2. How tidy that would have been. Showcased another side of Brad Pitt -a brave choice for him to do this role I think. So many excellent characters and performances in this movie. i highly recommend it but advise that it need it is a tongue in cheek treatment of a serious subject - probably not for allt
QT's weakest film to date. I'd pass...
very quentin... ie. gruesome... funny though in a ' not sure why i am laughing sort of way'
Absolutely brilliant film, whose first twenty minutes is some incredibly tense film making! As for the end . . . all I can say is "if only" . . .
Thouroghly enjoyed this one. Worth watching
Lots of violence, not what l expected from Brad Pitt. The ending was good though, but l am grad l did not see it in the cinemas. Brad has a funny accent though
Pathetic - please don't waste your time watching this drivel !!
Probably, the worst film ever made !!
A poor excuse to screen gore, violence and lousy language with a hopeless script, pointless plot and inept effects/sets.
Marvelous movie! I had a laugh at the very end. Would recommend this. Just to think it could have happened, then the war would have been over earlier.
Excellent acting by all concerned. Christopher Waltz certainly earned his oscar award. Tarantino has a style that is just his, makes his movies always entertaining. I will watch this again another time and pick up on things I may have missed first time round. It would have been better on the big screen of course.
Obviously some love it, some don't - I guess you have to watch it to decide, but just be prepared for the entire movie to be sub-titled, which is really annoying because my husband reads at the pace of a snail, and so pauses every sub-title he sees, which means I have to watch it like that!
Other wives may have similar experiences with sub-titled movies. The colour of the sub-titles across the screen means it is hard to read sometimes. Having said that, my husband (who has all but banned sub-titled movies in our house) gave it a 3, as well as me. Christopher Waltz is the stand-out character, and Brad Pitt isn't really in the movie all that much. To me, his character was somewhat confusing and in our opinion he was mis-cast. By the way, it didn't come across as a comedy, despite the trailers indicating that, it was more tongue-in-cheek than funny.
Tarantino at his most self indulgent. Brad Pitt totally over the top. piece of tripe.
Morally bankrupt revisionist nonsense from a once-great director who has lost his way. Badly paced and at times unforgivably dull. Achieves the rare feat of making his Nazi characters more sympathetic and interesting than the dullards he presents as heroes. Rotten dialogue and an utterly predictable linear storyline. Where were the twists? What happened to the genius behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs"?
Another excellent Brad Pitt movie, who does a sound rendition of a nazi hating American. While the story is not historically correct, it is full of action
Love this movie. Great cast, great acting
A fantastic film, VERY VERY violent, incredibly graphic violence involving knives, baseball bats and scalps. It's a Tarantino film, you know what to expect!!
An intriguing story, no main character in particular, just two main groups (besides the Nazi's of course), some comedy (not as much as the trailers make it seem), lots of tension, random bursts of action after very long scenes full of dialogue, lots of subtitles and a thrilling ending.
The best character is Shosanna Dreyfus, her storyline is amazing and her character is so admirable.
The worst is either Eli Roth's rather pointless character or Col. Hans Landa although he is supposed to be aggravating.
l'm a QT fan, its good but l'm not sold, sorry mocha joe.
Christoph Waltz is a revelation in this film thoroughly deserving of Oscar nomination.
Another pillow thrown at me by the wife, she watched the movie with her eyes closed. If you like Tarentino ???cult??? violence eg scalping, death & destruction excessive cruelty and a tongue in cheek adaptation of the end of World war 2; this is the movie for you. The villain Christoph Waltz was excellent in his role, Brad Pitt was disappointing, poor accent, over the top performance. Subtitles were fast & furious, and the alternative ending to WW 2 left you flat because it was pointless as you know it didn???t happen. Despite all that it was watchable and recommended due to Tarentino???s unpredictable direction but I was dodging bullets all night in my sleep. Wife gives it a 3 for what she saw, I give it a 4.
Actually quite funny in parts. Definitely worth a watch if you don't mind a bit of violence, but it's pretty tame for tarantino.
top marks to this film, the well written story line and a great cast help make it all come together.
Awesome begining but towards the end becomes a bit predictible. Can't compare with Pulp Fiction, that was a master piece.
i was a little disappointed when i saw this at the cinema, however on second viewing i found this to be a fantastic piece of film making...
Not all its cracked up to be. Thought it would be a much better film.
Very slow to begin and not that good have seen better
Awesome, although not as good as Dogs and Fiction it is still a must see in the Tarantino catalogue.
Definitely one of the best work Tarantino has done so far. The movie's got his particular touch all over. It's so well directed, so well told that even actors who are usually so bad, are amazing (Mike Myers/Eli Roth...Brad Pitt?). By the way thumbs up for Christoph Waltz, excellent acting.
Indeed a splendid piece of cinema with superbe dialogues (Well it's a Tarantino!) and a "showing off' of Tarantino style. Who else is making films like he does these days? Finally the 7th art is back.
So rent this and forget about history, Tarantino is reinventing it. I finally know how The Furher died. Awesome!
Over hyped and underwelming. Some clever, intense and nail biting scenes, but found myself skipping the movie forward alot.
Not what I thought it was going to be. Bit of a nothing movie.
i got confused as one minute you get subtitles next in English then subtitles i watched half the movie and turned it off as it was a bit over rated
A brilliant masterpiece which comes close to surpassing Pulp Fiction
This is Pulp Fiction WWII style. Dialogue is brilliant. Not to be missed this one.
Weird, not one of Tarantino's best...
Tarantino at his best. Violence with humour built in to a grand story. If only Nazi Germany had fallen as this depicts. Clever.
Way to win the war Mr Pitt sir!...if only Hitler and all his cronies were really at that cinema..this has Oscar nomination all over it...boy .this is a great flick..and the wait is worth it..a 9/10
The cult of Tarantino continues to roll on despite the decline in his work since Jackie Brown. Basterds has its moments, particularly those featuring Christoph Waltz, but little else to elevate it above being a mere homage to grindhouse cinema.
I was expecting a straight Quentin Tarantino style movie (action and violence). Somehow it has the effect of being directed by a British director as well (many parts, dialogue focus). At the end of the day, it is a so-so movie.
Fabulous, thought-provoking film. Nicely balanced mix of fast-paced action, and suspense-filled dialogue scenes. While it may not have been Tarantino's intention, this film had us discussing the rightness and wrongness of violence in war. You never know where it is going and it is better that way, so best to go in with minimal plot detail. More linear than Tarantino's usual fare but no flat spots, despite the length. Brad Pitt is excellent, as is the actor who plays the Nazi Lando, the 'Jew Hunter'. Highly recommended.
If you're a fanboy of Tarantino you will no doubt love this.
More objective viewers will find some great moments filled in with a lot of wallpaper and winking at the camera.
Just seen this at the cinema and loved it. Best QT movie since Pulp Fiction....although that probably does it an injustice as basically all his movies since PF have been rubbish!
Cannot wait to see this movie... looks fantastic!
