In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organises a group of Jewish American soldiers to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution. Later known to their enemy as The Basterds, Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

A war movie about war and movies

Does Inglourious Basterds attempt to erase every preconceived notion of wartime bravery? Does it tear page after page from the history books (like so many Nazi scalps) and hurl them into the fireplace with reckless abandon? Does it course its way through your veins, pumping venom and bile into your heart and leave you begging for more? Yes, yes, gloriously yes! Quentin Tarantino has delivered the most satisfyingly delicious picture of his career. It is a rip-snorting revenge tale, a throwback to the spaghetti-western, an exercise in extreme-conversation and a love-letter to cinema. Consider this review my love-letter to Tarantino.

Inglourious Basterds is the director's most adult film to date. It's deliberately paced and features some of the meatiest and most thrilling dialogue of his impressive filmography so-far. Each and every one of the films numerous characters are unquestionably memorable, whether they are lovable or detestable or desirable. Here is a master filmmaker taking complete control of his craft and fine tuning every last detail to deliver the best possible final product. Even the spelling of the film’s title has been ingeniously altered. Of course, Inglourious Basterds is the correct spelling in the Wonderful World of Quentin, where Nazis yak about Apple Strudels, American soldiers collect scalps like baseball cards and the fate of the world rests in the hands of a couple of movie buffs. So much to love, yet so little room to write!

So, once upon a time: Those titular Basterds are tearing up Nazi-occupied France by killing and scalping as many members of the Third Reich as they can get their hands on. The ragtag group is led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) and includes a baseball-bat-wielding maniac nicknamed The Bear Jew (Eli Roth) as well as German-born murderer Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger). Obviously, The Fuhrer is none too pleased with the exploits of these Yankees. Thank goodness then for Nazis like Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl), a genuine war-hero who took out almost 300 Allies on his own. Propaganda minister Goebbels himself has directed a film about Zoller’s heroics and plans to screen it for the entire German army high command. The entire German high command packed into a cinema for one night only? Send in The Basterds!

In my synopsis I haven't even mentioned the film’s two main characters: Shoshanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), a young French-Jewish woman who is hiding in plain-sight as the owner of the aforementioned cinema; and Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), a charming and unsettling Nazi detective nicknamed The Jew Hunter (for reasons that surely do not need to be explained). Although many will walk into the cinema to see Brad Pitt kicking Nazi butt, everyone will leave talking about Shoshanna and Hans. Christoph Waltz will also win the Best Supporting Actor at next year’s Oscar ceremony. Trust me on this one.

You'll be glad to know that I have barely scratched the surface of Tarantino's war flick. No matter how many ways I try and describe the plot to you, there is nothing quite like watching the film unfold in front of you. Tarantino is in no rush to get to the final showdown between The Heroes and The Villains. He spreads it out over five gorgeous chapters that slowly unveil the major players and their motivations. A couple of key scenes run close to twenty minutes in length, which is something you never see. One notable sequence begins with drunken joy and ends with bloodshed. In between, we get to enjoy some of Tarantino's finest work as characters teeter between friendly conversation and murderous rage. Could any other director pull this off? He's obviously aided by a stunning cast who do not disappoint. Even Pitt's relatively one-note Lieutenant manages to evolve into a hilarious comic foil, even if he does play second fiddle to the stunning Christoph Waltz.

I'd be lying if I said that Inglourious Basterds has a lot to say. It does not try and explore the themes of cruelty during wartime; nor do The Basterds act as an extended metaphor for something in today's society. This is the kind of picture that says more about its filmmaker than it does its subject. Much like Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell, here we have a director compiling his favourite elements of cinema and turning it into this unique beast that is still undeniably their own. Tarantino's filmmaking is (and has always been) breathtaking, but there is something about seeing him work with all this World War 2 iconography that is completely exhilarating. It opens up a whole world of possibility - Tarantino could literally delve into the depths of history and play with anything he wants to. Am I being too hyperbolic? Inglourious Basterds demands it. Films like these are rare and we have to grab onto them whenever we get the chance.

5/5

Tarantino Strikes again! Although perhaps one of the most inaccurate films found out there about WWII, it was a true cult classic! Cruel humor and ridiculous violence, Recipe for a 5 star Tarantino flick.

A strange movie about the screening of a Nazi propaganda movie. There is the usual brutal Tarantino violence, but each violent act only goes for a few seconds- the rest of the movie is dialogue driven. The film was inconsistent in its mood: sometimes reflective; sometimes zany; sometimes comic; sometimes gory; etc. All of the charcters were overdrawn, probably intentionally, but this made the final product quite ridiculous at times. This is a war movie with a difference.

Would have given it 5 stars if the DVD wasn't faulty. When I paused it it wouldn't restart and I had to go back to the menu and advance through the scenes. Great acting and action if you like WWII movies.

Movie was okay but I expected more. The movie would have been better if it had been longer. Liked the ending but perhaps they should have stuck to history and explored that more - afterall most of the Nazis escaped to America and USSR, with theories that Hitler actually escaped and his "double" was actually found in his bunker.

Though "Inglorious Bastards: is obviously a send up on Hitler and his war machine it's a real winner. Once again the oppressed wins over the oppressor in spectacular fashion. As for Brad Pitt's team sending shivers up the spines of the Arians it's good to see them being very afraid

I Loved this movie! Another awesome release from Tarantino. As usual it had its quintessential Tarantino quirks such as his typical cameo apearence (see if you can spot him) and also a reference to his fetish for the female foot! Brad Pitt was at his usual best but also faced stiff competition from all of the cast members who where equally as good. I highly recommend this movie. N.B. - See if you can also see the original 70's B grade War-Ploitation version of this movie, it is quite different from Tarantino version.

If you're easily offended or looking for an accurate WWII film, stay away from this. Tarantino's film is a piece of historical fiction that depicts many aspects of the war from the point of view of civilians whilst being totally bad*** and is knowingly plays with the truth of real events. If you want to see an awesome, well written and original war film then watch this one. It's not everyone's type of movie, but I LOVE it!

Tarantino failed. Story-line too loose and random. Missed the mark on threading it all together so that the disparate ends came to a satisfactory conclusion. One cannot use past events as a plot-line and then just reinvent aspects of the past to justify a warped ending. Very unsatisfying and disappointing.

Was this some sort of weird wish fulfilment? "If I'd run the war a few guys from the good ol' USA would have beat those nazis in six months?" By scalping them individually? The usual Tarantio obsession with blood and death - the more torture the better apparently. An insult to the people who died and those who fought during a grinding six year war against an appalling enemy. I even prefer those bad US ''while we were winning the war for you we stopped to plunder art galleries' movies to this pathetic rewrite history fantasy. I don't mind the gore in context, more realistic wounding and trauma in war movies might depict just how unglamorous it truly is, although until we can manage the stench, the noise and the feel of a battlefield in the cinema that's a small hope, but this movie was gratuitous nonsense. It could have done with serious editing, it was at least an hour too long for a terribly predictable story. The one star is for the excellent performances by Waltz and Diehl.

OK - so I can see where all the great reviews are coming from - there was alot of thought that went into this one but I have to say it bombed for me. Yes, great acting but not a spectacular storyline, was way to much in this movie and I think there was alot of room for improvement in terms of drama. This is definately one of those movie you either love or hate.

A truly entertaining fanciful twist on the ending of the World War. Briiliantly casted with all the twists and unexpected turns leading upto the brilliant climax. In true Quentin T style the film at times depicts violent situations with gruesome results but all in its stride as a war movie. Gloriously dark, shocking and leaves you cheering the bravery of the Inglorious Bastards.

Anyone watching this and not expecting gore and blood has never seen a Tarantino movie. The cinematic use of the German and French language without subtitles was annoying and we ended up turning on the hearing impaired subtitles, so were treated to the written 'sound effects' too. A tad discombobulating. Very noisy, very gory - but also very talkfest. Wouldn't watch it again.

If you're a Tarantino Fan then this movie is A typical of his style of directing and for me was a very enjoyable movie. If you not a fan of Quentin Taratino's work you may find it a little lame and lacking in the story line. All in all I loved it but Tarantino is my favourite director and it's just another addition to the Band Apart group of films, Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Resevoir Dogs to mention a few. Gets the dawgie High Five from this lil black dog......

Tarrantino's appeal to me is more than unexpected shocking violence. It's his ability to make villans likeable both before and after we know they are beyond redemption. In this regard Christoph Waltz is delicious as the jew hunter. Also part of Tarrantino's arsenal is his use of language, with a good part of this film in French his dialogue flows naturally with tragic humour and an almost poetic pace. Most of all this is not an historic film. It would be fun to think of some year 10 student cramping this film for their WW2 report.

Very brutal, and I found the plot improbable. If Allied troops had behaved as badly as this lot, they would have been no better than the Nazis. I also found it quite ridiculous that a girl who escapes the Nazis from a farm in rural France turns out to be a Paris cinema-owner. The film does at least attempt to portray some Germans as 'normal', which only serves to make the brutality of the 'Basterds' worse.

This is essentially a Jew's wet dream. Brutal and disgusting. Whether you like Tarantino's style is one thing, but the underlying scenario is what is bothersome. It's obviously not meant to be historically accurate but when you have a bunch of Jews who go around committing atrocities on German countrymen (yes we're talking about the Wehrmacht here, not the SS), only the ignorant and sick will find it entertaining. Seeing soldiers, who are most likely just conscripts, getting scalped is disgusting. I don't care what happened in actual history, if you need to watch this to feel satisfied then you have serious problems. This is just a case of revenge, which is completely different to justice.

Tarantino builds the tension around some amazing performances in this movie. At times a bit slow, and at times sadistic/sick, nonetheless you marvel how he manages to involve you in the intensity of his reboot of the Nazi/resistance subgenre. This movie is on the surface, many longish conversations, in dispersed with moments of sheer violence. What got me in was the impending menace of all the conversations. You have a feeling that something brutal is about to occur, but you're not sure what it will be, and exactly when it will happen. The first long conversation in the farm house sets this up. Movie making at it's best, great script, great acting and great cinematography.

Good story line but it was too slow for me. I expected a bit more action from the Basterds.

Parts of the film were brilliant, yet Brad Pitt's accent was irritating, as was is flat character. Christoph Waltz was the only character who had a rounded character, hence Best supporting actor Oscar. Weird soundtrack to a WW2 film. Just too weird too impress.

In true Quentin Tarantino style, very bloody yet very funny. The only downside was that I am not a fast reader and the subtitles seemed to whiz by. If you watch this movie and you are like me, make sure you are ready to press pause.

BRILLIANT!!! A very clever alternative ending to WW2. How tidy that would have been. Showcased another side of Brad Pitt -a brave choice for him to do this role I think. So many excellent characters and performances in this movie. i highly recommend it but advise that it need it is a tongue in cheek treatment of a serious subject - probably not for allt

Pathetic - please don't waste your time watching this drivel !! Probably, the worst film ever made !! A poor excuse to screen gore, violence and lousy language with a hopeless script, pointless plot and inept effects/sets.

Marvelous movie! I had a laugh at the very end. Would recommend this. Just to think it could have happened, then the war would have been over earlier. Excellent acting by all concerned. Christopher Waltz certainly earned his oscar award. Tarantino has a style that is just his, makes his movies always entertaining. I will watch this again another time and pick up on things I may have missed first time round. It would have been better on the big screen of course.

Obviously some love it, some don't - I guess you have to watch it to decide, but just be prepared for the entire movie to be sub-titled, which is really annoying because my husband reads at the pace of a snail, and so pauses every sub-title he sees, which means I have to watch it like that! Other wives may have similar experiences with sub-titled movies. The colour of the sub-titles across the screen means it is hard to read sometimes. Having said that, my husband (who has all but banned sub-titled movies in our house) gave it a 3, as well as me. Christopher Waltz is the stand-out character, and Brad Pitt isn't really in the movie all that much. To me, his character was somewhat confusing and in our opinion he was mis-cast. By the way, it didn't come across as a comedy, despite the trailers indicating that, it was more tongue-in-cheek than funny.

Morally bankrupt revisionist nonsense from a once-great director who has lost his way. Badly paced and at times unforgivably dull. Achieves the rare feat of making his Nazi characters more sympathetic and interesting than the dullards he presents as heroes. Rotten dialogue and an utterly predictable linear storyline. Where were the twists? What happened to the genius behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs"?

A fantastic film, VERY VERY violent, incredibly graphic violence involving knives, baseball bats and scalps. It's a Tarantino film, you know what to expect!! An intriguing story, no main character in particular, just two main groups (besides the Nazi's of course), some comedy (not as much as the trailers make it seem), lots of tension, random bursts of action after very long scenes full of dialogue, lots of subtitles and a thrilling ending. The best character is Shosanna Dreyfus, her storyline is amazing and her character is so admirable. The worst is either Eli Roth's rather pointless character or Col. Hans Landa although he is supposed to be aggravating.

Another pillow thrown at me by the wife, she watched the movie with her eyes closed. If you like Tarentino ???cult??? violence eg scalping, death & destruction excessive cruelty and a tongue in cheek adaptation of the end of World war 2; this is the movie for you. The villain Christoph Waltz was excellent in his role, Brad Pitt was disappointing, poor accent, over the top performance. Subtitles were fast & furious, and the alternative ending to WW 2 left you flat because it was pointless as you know it didn???t happen. Despite all that it was watchable and recommended due to Tarentino???s unpredictable direction but I was dodging bullets all night in my sleep. Wife gives it a 3 for what she saw, I give it a 4.

Definitely one of the best work Tarantino has done so far. The movie's got his particular touch all over. It's so well directed, so well told that even actors who are usually so bad, are amazing (Mike Myers/Eli Roth...Brad Pitt?). By the way thumbs up for Christoph Waltz, excellent acting. Indeed a splendid piece of cinema with superbe dialogues (Well it's a Tarantino!) and a "showing off' of Tarantino style. Who else is making films like he does these days? Finally the 7th art is back. So rent this and forget about history, Tarantino is reinventing it. I finally know how The Furher died. Awesome!

The cult of Tarantino continues to roll on despite the decline in his work since Jackie Brown. Basterds has its moments, particularly those featuring Christoph Waltz, but little else to elevate it above being a mere homage to grindhouse cinema.

I was expecting a straight Quentin Tarantino style movie (action and violence). Somehow it has the effect of being directed by a British director as well (many parts, dialogue focus). At the end of the day, it is a so-so movie.

Fabulous, thought-provoking film. Nicely balanced mix of fast-paced action, and suspense-filled dialogue scenes. While it may not have been Tarantino's intention, this film had us discussing the rightness and wrongness of violence in war. You never know where it is going and it is better that way, so best to go in with minimal plot detail. More linear than Tarantino's usual fare but no flat spots, despite the length. Brad Pitt is excellent, as is the actor who plays the Nazi Lando, the 'Jew Hunter'. Highly recommended.
