What was Mark Whitacre thinking? A rising star at agricultural-industry giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Whitacre (Matt Damon) suddenly turns whistle-blower. Even as he exposes his company's multi-national price-fixing conspiracy to the FBI, Whitacre envisions himself being hailed as a hero of the common man and handed a promotion. But before all that can happen, the FBI needs evidence, so Whitacre eagerly agrees to wear a wire and carry a hidden tape recorder in his briefcase, imagining himself as a kind of de facto secret agent. Unfortunately for the FBI, their lead witness hasn't been quite so forthcoming about helping himself to the corporate coffers. Whitacre's ever-changing account frustrates the agents and threatens the case against ADM as it becomes almost impossible to decipher what is real and what is the product of Whitacre's rambling imagination. Based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in US history.

The movie becomes more interesting when there is a revealation about the parties to the crime. It took me three attempts to get interested and then I was caught from 60 mins onwards. While the facts become slowly evident, there is no clear divide between the facts and the lies. The revealations from that 60 min point come in quick succession and its more a matter of fast delivery for the sake of a kind of black comedy rather than understanding the mind of the criminal or unraveling the early story. The movie as well tries too hard to do a 1970's style treatment of the period (to science) like Mad Men did to the 1960's (advertising). As AF says the viewer becomes "unsatisfied". I suppose the director and writer try too hard to "unravel the plot cleverly". It's almost like the movie "Catch Me If You Can" but it started at the end and then went back to expose the story. We wait for the middle here almost thinking it's all fabrication by an obsessive employee until the cleverness of the crime is exposed!!

Its pretty funny to watch, and blows your mind if you know its based on a true story. Matt Damon did a great job. It lacked something though, that left me a bit unsatisfied. It was trying too hard to unravel the plot cleverly AND go on the main characters journey. Didn't quite work for me

I like Matt Damon but didn't particularly like this movie. I gave it two and half stars out of five.
