Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a tense thriller featuring Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. The film follows the parallel lives of Ming (Lau), a cop who secretly reports to ruthless Triad crime boss Sam (Eric Tsang); and Yan (Leung), an undercover police officer who poses as a Triad member in Sam's gang. For Yan, the years of living in the criminal underworld have taken their toll, and he longs to return to regular police duty. However, the only person who knows Yan's true identity is his mentor Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong), also the unsuspecting superior of Ming. When Wong's officers come face to face with Sam's gang, both leaders realize there are moles in their midst. Soon Yan and Ming must track each other down, leading to an inevitable confrontation.

Potentially a very good movie, however the sub-titles were too quick and it was too hard to keep up with the pace of the movie and fully understand what was happening.

This was actually remade in Hollywood as The Departed starring Leonardo DiCaprio, not the Richard Gere movie. One of my favourite Hong Kong cinema films. Gripping storyline, a little heartwrenching when you consider the big picture.

I thought it was ‘Internal Affairs’ lol I've been recommending this film to everyone I know, and now they are going to think it is the stupid Richard Gere movie. Infernal Affairs = Awesome Internal Affairs = Not so hot

I'd been wanting to watch this and it didn't disappoint at all. Excellent story, well paced and didn't go for hours and hours. It wasn't until towards the end I realised there was very little action in it, the story is heavily focused on the characters but they're interesting and well acted.

A fast-moving crime thriller set in Hong Kong with a gripping story and about 2 minutes of love-interest. Tony Leung, thankfully not a drug-dealer as he was in 'Cyclo', just brilliant as the police mole having to stay on his toes and yet keep his head down to avoid being picked off in the crossfire. Great entertainment.

Definately worth checking out, even if you've seen the Hollywood remake, The Departed (but try to get this one in first). Highly original and well directed, Infernal Affairs is a departure from the usual bullet-fests, or martial-arts-fanfares that come out of Hong Kong.

One of the best policiers I have ever seen. Certainly the equal of "The Departed" in action and onward movement. Exposition/explanation has been slightly sacrificed for tension. Absolutely excellent.

The film is very original and creative. No wonder the adapted Hollywood version 'The Departed' won 4 Oscar awards.

Gritty and tense Hong Kong crime drama with more than a nod to European movies. Well worth the effort.

For years HK has been coming out with silly films without substance, this film comes as a pleasant surprise, an excellent film by all standards.

To some people, the mark of a great foreign film is when Hollywood wants to do a remake of it. When you then hear that no less than Martin Scorsese, Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio are involved in the remake of Infernal Affairs, you know that this film has garnered some serious attention. And for very good reason. This movie is one of those rare things: an intelligent action movie. It does NOT have the over-the-top, fetishistic gun-play and gore of your average Hong Kong cop movie. What it has instead is excellent acting, intricate but believable scripting, solid character development and an unexpected level of pathos. The latter is especially injected by the undercover cop Yan, a good man who is increasingly desperate to extricate himself from the grubby world he is forced to inhabit. To me, this film would rate 5 paws except for one thing: annoying roles and acting by some of the female characters. It is as if the writers were unable to create solid, strong roles for women. The worst example is the female psychiatrist: she is too young/pretty/available to be at all credible. In addition, her character seems to be a token, hastily written love interest who was inserted at the last minute to fit into the "happy" ending (see the alternate "sad" ending - an extra feature - to see what I mean). As it stands, one of the best Hong Kong movies to date and a solid four paws (I would give it another half paw if the system let me).
