Indochina during the 30's. One of the largest rubber-tree plantations is owned by the French colonist Eliane, a proud but imprudent woman. She lives with her father and her native adoptive daughter Camille. At an auction Eliane gets to know the young officer Jean-Baptiste; after a short affair she refuses to see him again. But in the meantime Camille falls deeply in love with the young man, so Eliane takes the necessary steps to cause a transposition of Jean-Baptiste onto a far island. Though Camille gets married to another guy she goes on a long journey throughout the country in order to find the man she loves.

Great story and you felt like you had watched an epic. But I would have enjoyed it more if about 30 mins were taken out.

This, the second disc, from Quic flix seemed to "jam" in the same spots as the earlier copy. However I was able to get through to watch this time "most" of this movie. I did enjoy this but comments about english subtitles being hard to keep up with are valid. Slow moving melodrama with fabulous Vietname scenery is worth a look.

Beautiful movie, great acting especially Catherine Deneuve! The subtitles is bad, not enough time to read.

Location, photography stunning. Good yarn centred around historical fiction. Only problem is that the subtitles sometimes are not on screen long enough to read them.

Terribly cliched themes set against the turmoil in Vietnam during the French Occupation. Beautifully shot as a period piece. Worth a look if you've visited Vietnam or you like Vietnamese scenery, but very thin on historical accuracy.

If you dont speak french you may not be able to follow this film; the subtitling is BAD; incomplete, small font, inadequate time to read and poor colour for background. Otherwise very pretty and a decent story too.

A Classic. What more can I say.......only critisism was the speed of the subtitles require full attention which took you away from the incredible cinematography.

An appealing film I enjoyed apart from the very frequent instances of too short exposure of sub titles
