Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction: stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse; their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception implies that somewhere within the vast crevasses of the mind lay pockets of boundless imagination, capable of forging entire universes out of thin air. This very film seems to prove the rule. Inception features worlds within worlds within worlds (or rather, dreamscapes within dreamscapes within dreamscapes). At times Inception is confusing, but it is never incomprehensible. No doubt Nolan had various plot-points tattooed to his person, just to act as a constant reminder of where all the pieces of his puzzle fit. It’s a fastidiously scripted, impeccably acted and expertly directed action-thriller. However, as a whole, it doesn’t quite compare with Nolan’s meaty thematic think-pieces The Dark Knight and Memento. The difference between those films and Inception? ...

Nolan is so concerned here with tangling up your mind, he forgets to grab a hold of your heart.

The plot of Inception is an elaborate construction (perhaps even a giant misdirection), but if you gave me some graph paper, a pencil, an eraser, and a couple of hours, I’m sure I’d be able to draw its trajectory...probably. But diagrams I don’t have, and describing the film without visual aids may prove to be a fruitless exercise. However, to fully explain why this film is so wonderful, as well as to discuss the ways in which it falls short of its grandiose intentions, you’re going to need some idea of what this damn this is about. Sigh. And I was just getting used to saying “it’s a reboot of The A-Team” or “It’s just the next Iron Man movie” and having that suffice as a synopsis in my reviews. How dare Hollywood unveil an original property?!

Imagine if you will a reality in which people can infiltrate the dreams of others. Now, if this were the case, no doubt there would be specialists available to break into someone’s mind and steal from them secrets, ideas, memories and the like. In Inception, this is exactly the case. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the best extractor in the business; the man who enters the subconscious of a mark and takes what has been requested. After a failed attempt to steal from the mind of mysterious businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe), Dom and his point-man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) find themselves on the run from their angry employers. Saito offers them sanctuary with a catch. They must work for him, and perform the incredibly difficult task of ‘inception’ – that is, the planting of an idea within someone’s mind.

Their new target is Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), heir to Saito’s primary business competitor Maurice (Pete Postlethwaite). Dom is tasked with inspiring Robert to divide up his dying father’s empire and pave the way for Saito’s dominance. Not an easy task, but not impossible. It requires the invasion of multiple dreams, and thus, Dom seeks out some talented dream invaders (inceptors?) for assistance. So begins the traditional recruitment of the ragtag team of accomplices. There is Yusuf the chemist (Dileep Rao), Eames the forger (Tom Hardy) and, most importantly, Ariadne the architect (Ellen Page). Although I won’t describe them here, their colourful job descriptions are explained during the film. Sadly, the reason for Nolan’s selection of the name Ariadne is never provided.

There is a lot of exposition to get through, and to the film’s credit, it never rushes to bombard the audience with information. Unfortunately, the supremely talented Page is saddled with a character whose primary role is to conveniently ask what’s going on, and occasionally, whose dream we are currently in. It might indeed be a role necessary for the film’s clarity; I merely wish the wonderful Page had been given a bit more to chew on. The same goes for Gordon-Levitt. Actually, the same kind-of goes for everyone bar DiCaprio. In traditional heist-film fashion, the characters (although wonderfully performed across the board) are merely archetypes. Did Nolan think that more complex characters would hurl the already-intricate film into complete chaos? Hey, perhaps it would have! But that just means it’s hard to care about anyone other than DiCaprio’s Cobb, who is given a wonderful arc involving the dream-haunting ghost of his wife (Marion Cotillard).

The more I think about this film, and the way in which its intricate screenplay unfolds, the more I respect it. The action set pieces are deliriously spectacular; one involving a gravity-impaired Gordon-Levitt in an ever-rotating hallway is wondrous to behold. The entire final act is pretty much a feat of near-genius, at least in terms of narrative composition and editing. However, what truly keeps Inception from the level of masterpiece is the emptiness of the characters. Again, if we read the film as a traditional action/heist film, I can forgive the reliance on characters that are merely a collection of tics. But Nolan wants us to delve deep into his character’s psyches, only for us to discover ... there’s nothing really there.

As a result of Nolan’s meticulous screenplay, the film doesn’t embrace the anarchy of imagination as one would hope. Compare it to that truly great film about subconscious invasion – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – and gape in awe at its calm amongst chaos; its insightfulness amongst the sci-fi. Inception isn’t a profound examination about the nature of reality. However, it is one of the most impressive pieces of action cinema made in the past decade, and it’s a delightfully twisted journey that I greatly enjoyed unravelling. Watching Inception is like being chased around an Escher staircase; at the time it is exhilarating and confusing and intense. It is only afterwards, once you’ve escaped from its paradoxical construction, that you realise there wasn’t really that much to it.

4.5/5

Epic film. Confusing at first but stick with it, the story doesn't become clear until the second half.

WARNING: Do not watch this film if you are under the influence of anything other than good, organic chocolate or a few too many kernels of salty popcorn. You need ALL your wits about you. ALL your powers of deduction. And ALL your faculties in check. Inception is one mother of a mind blowing experience. I watched it a few months ago now and I still want answers people! Deliciously frustrating in parts, Inception has all the ingredients of a typical Hollywood blockbuster - but it's so very far from typical it's ridiculous. A gargantuan budget bursting with special effects that will rock your world so heavily, you'll stop noticing the wizardry after a while - which is a great thing, and proves that story really is king and SFX should only enhance the narrative not squash it to death. Mixing stunning hyper-realism and good old fashioned thrills, spills and mystery, Inception is essentially a heist film based on a world where highly skilled people are hired to invade the dreams of others to plant thoughts and ideas - aka the act of INCEPTION. It's supposed to be a benevolent gift to have (ya think?), but of course, people get up to no good with the power. Enter Leo Di Caprio - uber intelligent thief, suitably enigmatic, focussed, and mouthwatering to look at (well I'm running out of superlatives here, gimme a break.). Hired to pull off the ultimate Inception in exchange for a much sought after reunion with his children, Leo's character buries himself deeper and deeper into the layers of unscrupulous minds - risking his sanity, his children and inevitably, his life. Plenty of heart-pounding moments that will have you asking a trillion questions and shaking your head long after the credits have rolled. Happily, this is one movie where I was actually filling in the blanks for my husband (for a change). For a truly satisfying experience, I would recommend you watch this with an aficionado who has seen it a few times.

Good special effects and it tries to be clever- but it really left me cold and unconnected with the characters (somehow mercenaries doing industrial espionage are unappealing and hard to relate to). Also hard to follow the plot at times. My partner kept watching, even though I gave up about 30 minutes in (I really tried, but just couldn't get into it). It is often compared with Source Code - I asked my partner what he thought and he said Source Code was the better film out of these two..

Very non linear but full of good ideas. Possibly the battle on the snow planet went on for too long but as an entertaining mental challenge it was great. The acting was good and the visual appearance excellent. The CGI made it interesting (albeit adding a bit more complexity to who was doing what to whom).

This movie is a masterpiece. In recognition it was 2011's equal highest Oscar winner, with 4 statues . However there were 2 travesties of justice. 1. Christopher Nolan did not receive a nomination for best director. Too his credit he was able to put together the movies's dream sequences as 3 levels of exciting action, simultaneouly occurring at 3 different time speeds. Absolutely pulled this off!. 2. Hans Zimmer, although nominated, did not receive the Oscar for best Musical Score. His soundtrack is the best ever to accompany an action movie. It culminated at the end of the movie with the stirring track "Time", which played to a clever & beautifully emotional movie ending. Luv it!!

Leo Di Caprio stars in this movie & I never saw one of his movies that was not full of suspense, drama & action. This did not go against the flow of quality movies starring Leo. Somethings about this film are reminiscent of "Shutter Island" which, also starred Di Caprio but this one will please Sci-Fi lovers as well as suspense lovers.

Personally I love asking people what they thought about this movie on a weekly basis, its easy to predict soon after what they expect from movies as well as how after there understanding for film goes. At no point while watching this film did I not believe Nolan was after making something accessible and enjoyable but that was the issue. After seeing Memento and realizing what potential the director holds I could not help but feel like he had missed the ball here. Now to explain how; when you talk about dreams we are in ourselves illustrating to people a place in our mind that almost is impossible to be expressed in words. It is easy by looking at films like The Cell and the Science of Sleep that Dreams should be a land of wonder.... and not something real and normal. There are other issues like the idea of waking dream, maybe a subtle hint at Philip K. Dick... but it comes of as an interesting idea that never captures its full potential. Outside the main characters many people feel like cameos or tools for the main plot. Maybe im being too critical on the film... but honestly I would of been happier if we were talking about the life in the matrix and not dreams... Would of made more sense to be honest. Regardless its a good film to waste time on...

Critic review summed it up perfectly. "All very well done etc, but after you've seen it you realise there wasn't really much to it." . You have to hand it to Leonardo, he was at his best as were the remaining cast , and the special effects were spectacular, but throughout there was a niggling uneasiness for me and I have to say I didn't really settle into enjoying it. Not for everyone including me. A film about DREAMS & the human minds potential and what it can create. The characters delve into the layers of dreams and attempt to influence other peoples minds. Director Nolan has a vivid imagination and the film can be confusing so much so I put on the subtitles so I could understand what was happening a bit better. The large scale special effect are excellent, lot of crashes and shootings but people to not get actually killed as it is only a dream. I found it a bit heavy going an anti climax and can only give it 2 stars

This one is a thinker! Don't bother watching it unless you want your mind to be tested. I loved it as it is consceptually magnificent. All of the cast provide great performances but I felt the film lacked a "human element". It felt a little too long and don't even think about coming into this film half way - you will end up asking too many questions and not enjoying the subtlties of this film.

Loved this movie. I enjoy Di Caprio doing dark stuff, and Ellen Page was amazing. I don't like movies that throw you into it then catch you up later, but it was a fantastic movie. Took a lot of concentration, but you couldn't look away from the screen. I recommend it to all of my friends. A definite five star

It;s certainly the next Matrix. The dream navigators are out trying to explore peoples subconsious to implant or gain information from their dreams. There's an architect who builds the dream, a forger who brings imagination to the dream and then there is Leonard DeCaprio who has been involved in navigating dreams for a little too long. So long he's losing a grip on reality and wondering which world he prefers and whether thats the dream world or not. A film which keeps you wondering as the spinning top keeps spinning : )

A ‘contemporary’ thriller, leading the mind on a gripping journey, distorting the perception of time and place, of reality and fantasy. This film pays immense attention to detail and is graphically captivating, leaving the anticipating the next twist in the plot. Too many other reviewer’s criticize the complexity and difficulty in understanding the film. If you don’t want to concentrate, Jennifer Aniston has some god awful romantic comedy you can use to pass by your time.

What is there to say about this movie? I loved it. Especially while I watched it - I loved the ideas - but I think it's not going to be a memorable movie or a movie I need to watch again in future. It's incredibly visually complex (and very suited to the big screen), but is at heart a simple story, which is also obscured by the amazing amount of Bond-style action. It felt like you were playing a good computer game. It reminded me of The Matrix. It reminded me of Strange Days (a favourite). It reminded me of one of those short SF stories you read that are a world unto themselves while you read them and give so much satisfaction, but they never become your favourite story ever even though you'd kill to write like that. Great visuals, a strong set of ideas and a simple story backed up by good performances by the cast - it's an A-grade movie all round. Be warned though - it's long and the person I went to the cinema with said it was boring and he felt no empathy for the characters. He's right in that - there was none of the usual manipulations to create a strong bond between viewer and protagonist. The viewer was told a story about a romance, but there was no 'romance' as such. Maybe if it had that connection factor then it would be a more memorable movie and move from fantastic to great. Or maybe it didn't need it - you will have to judge for yourself.

I enjoyed this movie very much and managed to follow the storyline easily, remembering of course that it is a sci fi and don't try to 'understand or rationalise' the way the film goes. It is well acted and a very unusual plot/theme, plenty of car chases and gun fire for the boys but has a love story entwined for us romantics. You have to follow and watch but it is a great movie to sit back and escape from reality.

this is one of the best movies to come along in a long time. it is thought provoking, mentally stimulating, beautiful to watch. the actors are all well cast and play their roles brilliantly. i cannot fault this movie note - if you enjoy being told what exactly is happening in a movie, this is not for you, the beauty of the movie is that it allows you the freedom to think and form your own concept of what is happening, not some cookie cutter idea from a production line of action/drama movies

Very well executed, amazing visuals and the most complex storyline since The Matrix. In fact, there are quite a few echoes of The Matrix in this. You've got to pay attention in this one, as you can quickly lose track of what is going on. It's a great concept though and quite intruiging in the end. By the way, for those members with an iPhone, try the Inception app. It's free and pretty cool.

This movie is hard work. I had to force myself to stick with it, hoping that something Di Caprio was in would be a decent story. It was so hard to distinguish the dream state from reality that the viewer gets lost along the way. It seemed to be just a good excuse for meaningless violence.

There is much to admire about this movie but it left me feeling cold. The premise is interesting but I felt I've seen it all before (even the TV series Star Trek has played with the concept of multi layered 'realities' and of course there is The Matrix and Dark City). However, compared to The Fountain it comes across as a little, might I say, conventional in its execution. 3.5
