The movie is some what dated but I enjoyed it
Very well acted movie, one of Portiers best worth watching
Pretty old B&W, but good performances by Poitier and Steiger. The movie looks good and portrays the feel of racism in small town America at that time well. A little dated with some of the cast overacting in places, but overall worth watching.
I can't go past anything with Sydney in it and he didn't disappoint.
Great 60's film. Fantastic performances and atmosphere. Topics covered by the film are still relevant today - watch the film and remember who is now the new president of the USA. Classic film that should not be missed by any serious film fan.
There's a murder in a small Mississippi town. A black homicide detective gets arrested on suspicion, freed and then helps the local police-chief find the murderer, which upsets the local rednecks who try to drum him out of town. The relationship between detective and police-chief is in turn explosive and conciliatory, but they have to get on, the detective has been told by his chief to stay, and the police-chief knows his job is on the line if he doesn't solve the murder. A sixties movie well-worth seeing with superb performances from Poitier and Steiger
Sidney Poitier is excellent in this movie - still worth watching today.
Thanks to the great acting and the direction this is still a film which captures the drama and problems of the mind set. I hope we have moved on , but sometimes i wonder. For discrimination operates in many roles.
Excellent direction and typically convincing performances by Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. Not the usual anti-racism featuring black/white Southern states, has quite a few original touches, including the widow's insistence that Poitier be involved in the investigation and her expressions of disgust at apparent injustice. Enjoyed ityears ago and enjoyed it again now.
The original and the best, Mr Poitier is superb against the backdrop of an otherwise racist, hateful & hick mob, not to mention the local P.D.
Steiger & Poiter at their best. Wonderful & powerful story line.
Well-written, tautly acted & still relevant today as the general themes are universal. I think Rod Steiger received the Oscar for his portrayal of the Chief of Police & Sidney Poitier is excellent as the "passing-through" homicide detective Virgil Tibbs.
Wonderful Rod Stieger at his best.
Crakerjack performances and storyline, looks good after the years.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great characters and an enjoyable peek at how it used to be.
Worth its classic status, as it explores the pervasiveness of racist attitudes in the US South in a very understated way, almost as an incidental to the plot. Very powerful movie.
Says it all about the South of the 60s
Brilliant acting, great story line.
a wonderful cast and solid storyline .. deservedly one of the all time greats.
