We are going to Bruges so decided to watch this movie! Yes it was violent, but it was still an enjoyable movie.
Funny in parts, very violent & language straight from the gutter. Loved Colin Farrell tho.
‘In Bruges’, black comedy and beautifully executed (pun intended) with delightful performances all round. Intelligently directed by Martin Mcdonagh and even more cleverly written by him.
A tougher movie than it first appears, and pretty sad, in the end, though one is left with a ray of hope. Hard to understand all the speech at the start, but you get better at it as it goes along.
This remains one of my favourite films ever - witty, gritty and poignant. An all-star ensemble cast, stunning scenery and an innovative script that's as funny as it is quirky. Yes, there is swearing. There are also dwarf jokes, fat jokes and jokes about how boring Belgium is. Be warned - if you a fat Belgian dwarf, you may find In Bruges offensive.
Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson - doesn't get much better than that! Does get a little ridiculous in parts but overall I loved it. I can't believe how many people are hung up on the swearing.
Bruge is a beutiful place. Loved the black humour disliked the foul language it wasn't required.
This is a brilliant film. A great, original plot that asks serious questions about guilt and redemption with hilarious dry humour throughout. As for the swearing, whether you like it or not some people actually talk that way, especially (I imagine) Irish hitmen. Rating a film 1 star or less because it accurately portrays the vernacular of a particular social type is ludicrous and does not do justice to this gem of a film.
I probably would not have seen this movie had I know how much shooting there was going to be, but on the whole, it was entertaining and kept you wondering to the end.
Bruges was the highlight for me - beautiful city. Colin Farrell played his character well, Ralph Fiennes was wonderfully menacing. However at the 69thmin. the picture fragmented and so did the audio. I got the general gist but was pretty much left in the dark. Too much swearing!
After reading the reviews - it is obviously not for everyone - but 6 of us saw it at the movies - and all loved it - and we thought we would see it again - still loved it - very dark humour - fantastic filming of Bruges - Irish actors - brilliant!
not worth watching, vocabularly consists mostly of F-word, billed as action /comedy NOT!
PUTRID
LISTERENE and bleach would not cleanse the cast's mouths.
Revolting, disgusting, horrible- unless you are a bunch of Year 7 boys who want to watch lots of idiots using the 'F' word incessantly- switched off after 5 minutes - or was it 4?
ok movie interesting plot change .worth watching
Great movie - very quirky and very good English humour. Lots of bad language and gore...not for the faint hearted!
An English Tarantino movie? Really funny and very clever movie. Enjoyable from go to whoa. Don't take some of the obvious improbable scenes too seriously.
Great filming of Bruge, as a city worth going out of your way to visit. The same cannot be said for the storyline. Often poorly directed, especially with the female characters
Well paced, quirky & edgey - great British cast.
I found this really awful. I wanted Colin Farrell to shoot himself. I could not care less. Boring, charmless, feel-the-seconds-pass-like-hours painful, life-suckingly dull.
Very good.
Good story , a bit of culture ie medieval city, good characters with interresting accents - very English - in a good way
This movie stopped half way on me and I could not get it to start again.
Brilliant! I give this 5 stars simply for the incredible character development, which is sadly something most movies lack. The two main characters gave a stellar performance, providing both hilarious comedy and heart wrenching emotional scenes. I was glued the whole way through. It may not be for everyone though, as my girlfriend fell asleep.
This was laugh out loud funny, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The two lead actors have a brilliant banter through the entire film, and no stupid american ending in site. A bit confronting, and probably not for people overly concerned with being politically correct, but funny none the less.
This movie is ok if you want to see the beautiful city of Bruges otherwise the movie is not really worth watching. It lacks storyline.
Slow start, not sure where it's going, but once you start going along with the characters, it's wonderful to watch. And then Raph Fiennes comes in. And the film gets even better.
Pretty dark storyline but some FANTASTIC one line that will make you laugh out loud.
Recommend.
Lamer and darker than I thought it would be.
don't bother. didn't really go any where and was like they made this one for the sake of making a movie, low budget, no thrills, bad storyline
Yeh it was OK - got a bit silly towards the end. Was good for a change to see a British comedy rather than the usual American offerings
This is a great movie. Check it out
Interesting! Bit different, but I really couldnt get into it!
Loved it! Despite it being a story about two hitman, there were lots of laughs.
Bit gorry but enjoyed the uniqueness of this film
It's too pretty a town for these lowlifes. One of them doesn't even appreciate it. On the other hand they show some honour, at least to each other if not to bystanders. A bit of good humour along the way to the inevitable violence.
Quite a dark story line but it has a great story with some great one liners that make you laugh lots.
I guess I don't really appreciate dark humor (in response to Craig Hill's review) because I thought that I wasted an hour of my life watching this movie (fast forwarded through some of the slow parts otherwise I would have wasted more time). The plot was good, some of the character's lines where a laugh but very very slow and the soundtrack just didn't gel for me.
I have mixed feelings about this movie. It was a little slow, but there were a few parts that made me laugh. There is lots of swearing, which some may find offensive, and when the movie finished it left me feeling the whole thing was a little bit pointless, but strangely it still kept me intrigued until the end.
Not the quality of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but not a bad British gangster movie. A bit slow at times and not for people who don't appreciate dark humour.
loved the dark humour - great juxtaposition with the chocolate box appeal of Bruges.
Total disappointment! Had to have subtitles on as the Irish accent was so thick it was hard to understand what was being said most of the time.
I visited Bruges last year and so it was nice to see the familiar sights again but apart from that there's nothing positive I can say about the film.
This ranks right up with "Hot Fuzz" as one of the worst movies I've ever seen. No wonder CF's career is in decline. Not funny, poor storyline, a waste of time. Not my sense of humour at all.
Not my sort of movie, didn't like this at all.
The acting, the dialogues are superbe. Colin Farrell is excellent however I give 2 stars for the boring bits and the end that I find quite stupid. Ralph Fiennes running with a gun in his hand in the whole town and no police to be seen, also the jump and the guy is still alive.. quite absurd. Also the cop arresting Farrell in the train with the Canadians, COME ON!
Slow at times and quite funny, the dialogues and acting save that flick and I would have marked it with a 3 stars if the end wasn't too over the top.
Great movie and very funny. Reminded me in style of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - clever, black humour. Not your regular comedy though and you need to be prepared for some realistic blood and gore scenes. One of the better movies I've seen in a long time.
Quirky British gangster film - not the best in the genre. Bruges definitely the star!
Fantastic!! Many laugh out loud moments and a whole lot of swearing.
An interesting movie that looses its way about half way through and becomes increasingly ridiculous. It was as if the director didn't know which way to go. Drama? Comedy? Travelogue? Action movie?
could not understand what the movie was about, not one that i would recommend.
Some nice touches (characterization, setting) elevate this (bloody) tale of two hit men to something more interesting.
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie -found it funny and the city of Bruges is such a beautiful place.
Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson play two hitmen sent to Bruge for a "cool off" period, or so they think! Gleeson's character takes to the city and its culture immediately but the Farrell character is like a fish out of water, can't understand why he's in such a boring place.
Ralph Fiennes plays a mean "boss" a long way from the sooky romantic roles he is usually so famous for and is a treat.
For those who like Pommy humour.
one of the best movies ive seen in '09.
Must have been a slow day for Colin Farrell. Give this one a miss
Highly entertaining. Some very black humour, a lot of gratuitous mediaeval architecture and art (surely the Belgian Tourist Board bank-rolled this film), and a midget (I mean dwarf). Also good to see Ralph Fiennes break his earnest Englishman stereotype. It's quite violent and it gives "The Departed" a run for its money with it's F-word frequency - my wife hated it.
Truly a fine black comedy with great performances.
Sensitive and honourable hoods? Probably not what you’d expect! Especially when the morals and buddy-buddy relationship of Irish hit-men Ken and Ray get in the way. The thuggish life-and-death thriller is laced with dark humour, deviant characters, romance and unpredictable surprises, all embellished by the striking medieval setting of contemporary Bruges. The unlikely plot makes for entertaining fare, unless, of course, you find it all too ridiculous, bordering on the surreal and the jokes don’t tickle you know what. Gleeson and Farrell as the Irish gunmen deliver the goods making the incredible almost believable. Their foul-mouthed and intensely volatile boss Harry (Ralph Finnes) is also a deadly killer who in an ironical twist upholds his principles.
Unique movie that will not be everyones cup of tea but I enjoyed it. The language was quite strong but it suited the characters and the story. Farrell was good but thought that Brendan Gleeson was a standout - great performance.
thought it was a great concept having hit-men with feelings - funny
Quirky funny...enjoyed it. Hit men with feelings.
One of the best films I've ween in a long time
One of the best films of 2008.
I knew little about the film but it turned out to be well acted, well-written and have a genuinely surprising story arc. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are both wonderful and manage to pull off black comedy in an understated way.
This is a pretty macabre story, but I loved the black humour of it. A really good evening in, with some surprising laughs. One caveat, I had to use the subtitles until I got used to the heavy Dublin accent.
Boring! Boring! Boring! ZZZZZZ
Did not know what to expect with this one. Turned out to be very entertaining. I liked the dialogue between the characters. And the scenery both night and day. Very interesting turn of events in the end. Definitely a must see, just to watch Colin Farrell's facial expressions!
Absolutely fantastic, loved it, funniest film I've seen in ages.
Story. Script. Casting. Location. Cinematography. Soundtrack. Comedy. Drama. Must see.
great writing and atmosphere. goes the full circle and actually completes a story and makes brilliant ironic sense. witty, dark yet very beautiful. top performances and direction. A gem.
This movie is awesome! The acting brilliant!
Colin Farrell's eyebrows alone are worth an Oscar.
The humour and clever dialogue lull you into a relaxed mood, to enjoy the ancient city of Bruges. Then, gradually, subtle and sinister elements creep in to the picture. Our comic heroes are not quite the funny, bumbling fools they first appeared to be.
Suddenly you are no longer watching a travelogue of old Europe, but hurtling into a violent and possibly deadly turn of events. The end is breathtaking.
For all the above reasons, and more,, "In Bruges" is one of the best movies around.
After 5' I thought this film would be bad. After 10' I thought it atrocious, I watched for a further 20' just to be fair and experience a bad modern film. This film is an insult, and I am astonished at some of the reviews it got from "Rotten Tomatoes". David Stratton has sunk in my estimation. There is nothing of value or purpose in this film - and certainly no comedy.
If the "F" word was removed from the dialogue, the film would probably last only a minute or so. One characteristic of a moron is when you have nothing to say, swear. Here is what my daughter thought of it - "Any film that has Colin Farrell in it I avoid like the plague. I am sick of the constant swearing in films, it's so unnecessary. The scriptwriters should go to brat camp and their first challenge should be to write a 10-minute scene with no profanities in it. They'd probably all get sent home on day one."
Film makers have got to stop serving us up this tripe. Once again, I am disturbed by the fact that this sort of film making exists, and what it says about a society that it finds it acceptable.
Strange movie to rate, arthouse , not everybodies taste. Storyline slow to build, I enjoyed the irish humour b/t the two 'hitmen' Farrell & Gleeson. Note:- filthy lanuage throught out the film.... F & C... way over the top. However the Director seemed to enjoy it so much so they made a short bonus clip just on all the filthy lanuuage used in the film. Recommended if you want something a bit unusual,
Colin Farrell has never been funnier, except in Alexander...and that wasn't intentional.
