Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective John Spooner's (Smith) investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny (Tudyk), appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin (Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots.

Entertaining 3D action film, (now also available in blue ray and even in 3D blue ray)!
My only objections are to the excessive product placement(s) and glorifying/excessive usage of guns.
The moral and philosophical questions of artificial intelligence were interesting. Probably deserves 4 stars overall.

If you enjoyed the books, don't bother. This has very little to do with the books. Also Will Smith plays the same character that he always plays (Men In Black movies, Independence day etc.). It would seem that he has a very limit range. If you can get through all of that and enjoy movies that are more about special effects than actual story, then you will enjoy the movie otherwise, don't bother.

Asimov fans would like it but there is a sense that something is missing... ah yes, all the clevel deductions are gone and are replaced by chaise scenes and annoying extras.
Nevertheless, it has more thought in it than most action movies and is worth watching... oh and Susan Calton seems lost half the time (and is not the strict and calculating genius she is in the books)... and she is hot (as opposed to the book), but I'm totally cool with the latter unfaithfulness to the original story.

Adapted from the famous novel by Isaac Asimov that began an award winning series of science fiction this screenplay is lighter in its treatment of the moral and ethical questions raised by the Laws of Robots. While it excels in computerised action scenes it avoids the hard questions and settles for soft romance and the triumph of a good heart in a robot that developed a personality and a conscience. The animators are winners here with considerable support from Will Smith who keeps this film watchable.

Watch this for Will Smith and the cool FX; if you are looking for an intellectual exploration of man vs. machine add the Battlestar Galactica 2003 mini-series to your queue instead.

Will Smith is as dependable as ever in these roles: the devil-may-care action figure with plenty of attitude and personality. It's a pity his co-star Moynahan is not quite up to scratch; though this is a minor concern. The film itself is thoroughly fascinating with glimpses of possible futuristic technological advances - as in The 6th Day - and the entire viewing experience is most definitely not to be missed, least of all by sci-fi action fans.

The usual and reliably funny performance from Will Smith brings a needed down-to-earth element to this futuristic wham-bam-thankyou-robot-mam killer.
The last 20 minutes or so of this film were so intense that I'm renting it out simply to gear myself up for it. For those of slow neural kinetics and information overload tendencies, watch out! Don't blink or you'll miss it.

While not the top Sci-Fi, as for action seekers, iRobot can be more impressive that Minority Report, however this film has less interting amount of elements both in visual & suspense. With a title sounds like a product from Apple, Smith plays a detictive who is not confortable with the AI surroundings of the future, & even attempt to accuse one with murder. But laws are written where all the robots has to be in complient to protect their owners. Question is, how COULD a machine disobey that law.
