Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable...and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City...and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "The Infected" - victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville's every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Running out of time, Neville may be mankind's last hope,

The movie's title says it all. Strong performance by Will Smith (and his dog!). Eerie portrayal of America in the aftermath of a transmittable toxin, so strange seeing the usually bustling and energetic city left abandoned with the exeption of one man and a whole lot of mutants!! Yikes! Well worth the watch.

Very good movie but let down by inferior special effects when it comes to the infected. The scenes with Will Smith alone in the city are emotional and captivating but once the infected come on screen the quality of the film diminishes slightly. I still recommend it as good viewing and it's also worth checking out the extra alternate ending...

Just a great, post apocalyptic movie. I am not usually a big fan of Will Smith - but I think he does a stirling job pulling off effectively a one man movie (which is a difficult job). If you're a dog lover, just beware - there is a tough scene to get through. One of my favourites.

Mixed feelings about this film. Will Smith did his best , but the script didn't really deliver. Maybe I missed the point, but did they discover a cure for cancer and it went wrong or what?..because I didn't think it was very well explained. Overall it was watchable, I liked the film production in general except for the over CGI 'd bits. However, It did have me asking a few questions, like how much of a time frame did he have to build the roller door/window barricades, and his lab & gear, or are we to presume that it was already installed and he always worked from home? How did tap into the energy grid or did he generate his power, was it all solar? ..etc. etc. One question begets another! In the end all his security was veneer thin if the mutants were able to storm through the roof and he had to resort to high voltage lighting, explode bombs, shoot. etc. How did the female and her son get to a safe destination carrying the antidote? I agree with other members a bit of weak ending.

This movie bombed. Not even Will Smith could save it. It drags along for far too long, taking its own damn time building a small amout of connection with the focus character...and then at the last minute kills off the focus of the entire movie in a rather pointless way. Unsatisfying ending. Only 1 star because I can't give it a half.

I hated this movie. Saw it at the cinema and was disappointed it degenerated into a dumb zombie movie. At the end people in the cinema actually said out loud "you've gotta be kidding" type comments at the ending. Gee, it had so much promise. The first movie where I jumped off Smith's bandwagon...then I saw 20 mins of Hancock and jumped further off.

Lame. Instead, read the book and be surprised how they could take all the basic plot points, but then wimp out with the story line. Not dark, but dumb. 0ne star for the early scenes. Watch the superior Omega man instead.

I loved this movie and have seen it numerous amounts of time and love watching it again even though i know what is going to happen. Will smith was a great actor in this movie showing great acting skills from each emotion you could think of and what it would actually do to a human being in solitude for such a long time. This movie is one of my favourites especially being excited, scared, sad, and having a good story line not like your normal zombie movies. You will like this movie if you want to see a good zombie movie.

An absolute load of trash. A biggish budget does not equate to a good movie. Some grandeur in the cinematography. Less than mediocre acting. Awful directing. Yawn...so boring you'll be glad you can fast forward. All up be warned this is one of those blockbusters where the adverts and shorts are better than the actual movie.

Will Smith - arguably the finest black man on screen. Sam the dog - briliant canine acting. Very empathetic. Script (esp ending) - (gaggingly) dodgy. Look, if you can forgive the American flag-waving and the obvious plot holes, this is an okay scary film. I'm pretty easily scared and it was certainly brown underpants time for me. This film was never meant to be an intelligent look at a post-apocalypse US but it does its job just scaring weaklings like me. Not for the kiddies but maybe a good 'date night' movie when you need a reason to get all girly and need protection from a big, strong man (thinking Will Smith here)

The first half of this movie is first rate. Will Smith is Robert Neville, immune to a virus that has devastated the world, an entirely plausible concept given the recent swine flu epidemic. Neville has almost completely cracked under the terrible burden of loneliness, his only companion a dog named Sam. The scenes of an empty and silent New York pack as much a punch as the empty London scenes in 28 Days Later. However once the laughable CGI 'Infected' pop up the movie falls apart. Why they didn't use real humans in makeup amazes me. CGI isn't frighting at all. Then they go and tack on a ridiculous fantasy ending. Awful. A movie of two halfs really.

This is like a computer game in a movie with some fine special effects and a good dose of suspense. Will Smith plays a great role and if you like the apocolytpic genre, this won't disappoint. The only down side is the usual American schmaltz - woman turns up, woman makes breakfast for hungry man, complete with perfect table setting - and the final scene is more Little House on the Prairie than a thriller, but the good bits outweigh the bad.

Yawn! Effects are good, but so what, we're used to that by now. But this film falls deeply into the usual trap of all the budget spent on effects and not on scripting. Will Smith overacts and fills time with some past roles. And if there was one more shot of the howling, wide mouthed villain I was going to scream. Why do American's continually need to smash something when they get angry?

Will Smith is good enough to carry this film but I was let down by some of the CGI which was, I believe, below par and unrealistic. After reading Rob Matheson's novel, "I am Legend", I was disappointed with this movie. Although Will Smith brings a poignant determination to the character of Richard Neville, the movie lacks credibility. This is largely due to the 100% digital zombie-like "infected" creatures, who zero believability. For a high budget Hollywood feature, I think more effort could have been invested in the portrayal of the enemy.

I think that Will Smith is not a first rate actor. He is trying hard in this movie, but at times he goes into the realms of over-acting. The film itself is also disapointing. How could such an obviously big budget movie have such an abrupt daft ending? If almost all the population died, where are the bodies? If they became millions of mutants where were they all? How come all the abandoned cars were parked neatly along the sidewalks? If everyone was dead, who was working the power plant to provide electricity? How did the the little hispanic women with the little boy get through the mutants and into the SRV. How did she know how to clean and stitch up a knife wound? If Will was unconcious did she carry him up the stairs to his apartment? The cheesy islands of domesticity and talk about the efficacy of the pseudo-philosophy of reggae singers got to me. But it gave me a clue to the level of intelligence the movie was aimed at. Please also include the tripe that the destrution was all part of God's plan. Even WIll was angry about that one. The Mutants were one dimensional. They had no weapons. They could only come out at night. If you are going to fantisise about terror it must be, one would think, more awful than you could experience in reality. But take a famous real conflict in a city, like the battle of Stalingrad, for example. The opponents there were clever resourceful adversaries who were extremely adaptable and resourceful. They could fight night or day and had a 100 ways to kill you. There weren't any dogs or animals from the Zoo, people had to eat them. What all the footage of the dog was about I could not say and a lot of film was wasted in chasing deer about. Why not build a hide and shoot one from a sniper position? If you were the only inhabitant it wouldn't be deer that you would be worrying about. The rats and cockroaches that infest New York now after being combated daily by an army of pest exterminators, would, as we say in Australia, be coming out of the woodwork. As for the little vignette at the end with the little picture post card town surrounding the little church - a plea to film makers from now on----please DONT!

This is a visually confronting movie. The story was implausable. We were expected to believe that a virus mutates the human species into a completely new species which hates us for some reason. There is plenty of deer to chase and eat but Will Smith is the single target for the mutant species. Other than that, the movie does explore the possibility of an overgrown New York and a very buff Will Smith to strut his stuff in it.

A poor remake of The Omega Man, with the late Charlton Heston (aka original planet of the apes guy for those who don't know him). Includes the "The Omega Man" light sensitive zombies etc but this time it is the U.S of A that savest he world (see the flag in the last schenes flapping like there is no other country other than "them") , interestingly the scentist responsible for the plaque is British, in The Omega Man it was the US sceintists/military that cause the plague, what should we read into this ? At least the The Omega Man it was a religious parable right up to the almost crusifiction ending, here it is a US saves US. Frankly in the circumstances one could be forgiven for wating to go down with the rest of humanity rather than endure. My advice get the The Omega Man an watch that instead.

Having seen The Omega Man (Charlton Heston) I was interested to see the remake. I thought Will Smith did an outstanding job in portraying someone who thought he was the last human survivor. Whilst the special effects were a bit dodgy at times, the story itself was quite rivetting. I found the ending a little disappointing, albeit predictable. All in all a worthwhile movie to watch which will keep you entertained from start to finish (not too long either - only 90 mins).

The initial visual effects provides for such a gripping background and atmosphere that the remainder of this film may have been doomed to be a bit of a let down. Sometimes it is all about the anticipation and the mystery. That is not entirely the case here. For me the film delivers all the way through, although the second half could not sustain the excitement of the first and the realism is somewhat lost once you have a chance to sit back and contemplate some of the larger credibility gaps in the plot. Nonetheless, this is a terrific movie. The effects are second to none and Will Smith provides another thrilling performance (but we would expect no less – he seldom disappoints). I Am Legend is a remake. It has two predecessors: The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price and The Omega Man (1971) starring Charlton Heston. Whilst I have seen neither I imagine they were very different films. When one thinks about it, the degree of “reality” made possible by CGI has really changed our expectations of movies altogether. We are rapidly getting to the stage where effects, even those as startling and realistic as in I Am Legend will no longer impress us. We will have come to expect that anything is possible on film. This is not a bad thing as it will demand more from moviemakers in terms of story.
