It was reasonably entertaining but didn't really have a story per se. Gives you a bit of an insight into what it must be like on the front line in Iraq
This is a film for those who do not expect a storyline, but hope that the movie may get better. It never does. A real snorer zzz
Men who do more than required of them
Very disappointed with this movie. I was waiting for 'something' to happen,,,but it never really did. I really don't understand how this was so highly acclaimed by the critics. A little bit too unrealistic to be taken seriously, although saying that, there was some great psychological portrayal - I presume this is the edge the director was after.
More than two hours of movie later, my partner and I looked at each other and said "oh...".
For a slow paced movie, the 2 hrs and 10 mins of constant suspense seemed to go by quite quickly (suffering 'real' anxiety while awaiting the next big bang or sniper fire). The movie is indeed a character study of one Sgt James and his bomb squad who are playing a live game of cat and mouse in the remote desert towns and villages of Iraq. Jeremy Renner is a revealation as the rogue sergaent but it is questionable whether his reckless behaviour would be tolerated on the real battlefield. While he was the ultimate rogue operator he was the ultimate contradiction by having the soul of an angel, Despite the comments of another, those desert sands, bland landscapes and rundown villages look brilliantly life like on Blu Ray. Watch for the cameos of Ralph Fiennes and Guy Pearce.
Can't believe this won 6 Oscars. It must have been a quiet year in LaLa land. I was hoping he'd get blown up and the movie would end as it seemed to go for 4hrs plus.(130mins really) The movie was too heavy for my liking as there were no lighter moments where you could recharge from the weight of the movie. Do not watch this if you are feeling down as it will not raise your spirits but you may become comatose.
I thought this movie didn't really have a strong story, it just didn't really go anywhere.
It is very grainy as well, i thought it was just me but there's another review that says so too
A totally unrealistic depiction of soldiers in war. The movie is well made but the story is just a Hollywood glizted up version of what the average person wants to hear. If you've ever served in the armed forces you will hate this overexagerated flick.
The story is basically about a cowboy bomb squad techie who breaks all the rules and places everyones life at risk because he always wants to be the hero of the day. In real life he would be court marshalled several times and kicked out of the military, and this, would be done as a favour prevent his mates beating him to death.
I gave it two stars because the sets and acting were decent. The story wasn't.
Mmmh ... very high tension ... not quite sure what to make of it ... It was very good but I felt it went a bit long as there wasn't a lot to the story line. However I did find it quite fascinating and was holding my breath much of the way through. I don't know that it deserved quite the amount of accolades it received, but I do believe it is a very worthy film from the point of view of experiencing some of the dangers the military forces really do face, whether it be the Americans or (as I was thinking throughout) our own Australians. I don't know how any mother or wife could watch such a movie if they had a son (or daughter) doing such work or similar.
I cant believe this won an academy award. Dont bother getting it Blu-ray as the film has been shot fairly grainy and therefore no advantage over blu-ray v dvd.
