Hurts so good

Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker is one of the most thrilling action films I’ve seen in the past few years. It features set piece after pulse-quickening set piece. But unlike other action films, you do not look forward to each subsequent moment of action. The next action sequence might take the life of a beloved character. Without ever telling us much about the characters who inhabit the film, we understand and deeply care about them. It is a film you want to end as soon as it begins, provided everyone survives to the final credits. That is not a criticism. The Hurt Locker takes place in 2004, during the early stages of the Iraq war. The Bravo Company are in the final weeks of their rotation and are looking forward to heading home.

None more so than the members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which include Sergeant Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) However, they are soon joined by a new unit leader, Sergeant James (Jeremy Renner), a bomb-diffuser who is equal parts adrenaline junkie and suicidal maniac. The film follows their attempts to survive the most dangerous job in one of the world’s most dangerous places.

Bigelow displays the surest hand of any filmmaker of the past year, deftly balancing layers upon layers of increasing conflict. A man diffuses a bomb; he is flanked by his immediate unit members, who are themselves also protected by soldiers, who are each enclosed by dozens of Iraqi civilians in the surrounding buildings, amongst which hides a terrorist. The geography of every situation, despite its structural complexity, is immediately understandable. Despite the sprawling danger of every situation, Bigelow never forgets to bring the camera up close on Sergeant James face, as beads of sweat collect and eventually drop onto the red and blue wires in his hands.

The film was written by freelance journalist Mark Boal, who himself was embedded for a time with a U.S. army bomb squad. While the tension of the bomb diffusing sequences must be attributed to Kathryn Bigelow, credit for the engaging character drama which carries the film belongs to Boal. It is both the most flattering and somewhat indicting portrayal of soldiers from the second gulf war. The men of the Brave Company are unspeakably brave and devoted to their nation’s cause, for reasons they do not discuss, and perhaps do not even understand.

Renner gives one of those performances that makes you want to see everything he has ever acted in prior. He reminds me of a young Mel Gibson; equally charismatic and dangerously unhinged. Mackie also proves himself to be one of the best and most interesting actors around; his is a more subtle performance, but it feels the most real. The cast is also fitted out by numerous character actors; some quite famous and surprisingly given little screen-time considering their stature. Their appearance in the film reminds the audience that no-one, whether they be little-known indie actors or Oscar-nominated movie stars, are safe in the EOD.

Many words have been written about the politics (and lack thereof) in Bigelow’s war film. Some believe that the film does not address the war enough, whereas others believe that the mere fact it does not comment on the war is a commentary in itself. I wonder if it’s possible for a film set during war to be about anything other than that very war. Take a film like The Deer Hunter, which was set during the Vietnam War, but was not actually about the Vietnam War. It was about a generation of boys fighting a battle they did not understand. It was about the effect war had on them, and how they changed when they returned back home. The Hurt Locker asks a similar question, although for a new war and a new generation. That is, does war create soldiers, or is this generation made up of soldiers waiting for a war? As stated in the opening credits of the film, “war is a drug”. It’s true that war can get into our blood. The film just questions whether or not it was there all along.

4.5/5

Gripping, realistic I guess, portrayal of one of the background trades of modern day terrorist warfare. A movie (or documentary) to get one thinking about what a strange world we live in when children can be used as bomb devices. Ghastly!

Slow, characters are supposed to evolve throughout a movie, you learn to love or hate them; these were stagnant, the movie ended and I was indifferent to them. And what is it with these Blair Witch style cinematography movies? Is it a money saving venture? Or a way to reduce the backdrop required, whichever it does not improve the viewing. The storey (or characters) did not progress, it was like watching a heap of similar scenes one after the other. Would not reccomend, or even mention this movie in passing; below par.

Excellent movie. But you must keep in mind, the war is just an scenario, the movie is about human struggle. How the war has affected the main charcater and changed him. Very solid acting through the entire movie. A different twist to the war genre. If you are expecting a bullet flled explosion fest Hollywood movie, you will be disapointed. Very tense and slowed paced, full of long awkward silences but treated masterfully. Most certainly a one of a kind, but not for everyone for sure.

I loved this movie and I am a chic. This movie portrayed for me what a real hero is. Hard to watch visually at times I admired the leading man's character and sensuality. Duty, courage, integrity. For all mine clearers worldwide..I admire your efforts so much. Point and shoot idiot scripts pale in comparison to this clever script.

A pointless film - but it didn't illustrate the pointlessness of the Iraq invasion. I didn't have any sympathy for any of the characters who were rather flat ... Characters lacked insight - the film makers didn't leave the viewers with any insight either ... pointless.

Every soldier has a tale to tell. Some do, most don't. If you're an Ammunition Techician Officer you will shudder at some of these scenes. Some soldiers, and some of the more intrepid high risk sports people out there, will understand the need to experience the jaz (adrenaline) rush that surviving near death brings.

Yes, we get it. War is futile now please move on to some other themes. The level of realism enhanced by the cinematography is admirable and the near end scene is very tense (I'm sure you'd know which one I'm referring to if you've seen it) but this movie really does drag on with nothing. A slightly above average film. Why the Academy selected this for Best Picture surprises me.

Good movie, but not Oscar worthy. My ex-soldier husband found it implausible, and downright silly. Too many real-life inconsistencies with what combat is really like. He claims the only similarity is the dust! Basically, it was a good movie, but don't think it gives you any real insight into what the Australian, USA and British soldiers really face every day. Far too much hype and maybe quite a bit of politics behind the Oscars.

Now, I thought this film was good. I loved the fact that I didn't know what was going to happen next and it kept me engaged. But in my opinion I don't think it was worthy of an Oscar winning film for Best Picture (thats why I rented it). But in saying that the Direction from Kathryn Bigelow is excellent and their are some really beautiful cinematic moments in the film.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It deserved its awards. War movies are not my first choice and I wanted to see why this movie won awards against the much hyped film Avatar! I agree with members who said that members who trashed it had missed the point. What a refreshingly different style of film making, depicting and telling the story of daily life as soldiers in bomb disposal units (experts and specialists in their field). The edginess and tension created by the director, camera work and of course the actors, make the viewer feel connected with the experiences these specialist soldiers would encompass in a day, and how they would behave in the "hurt locker" at the end of their day. This film is edgy and rivetting viewing. It comes together on so many levels. We are not told all the facts about the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. Over the centuries wars have changed along with technology. All wars are frightening but not having a clear idea from moment to moment day to day where or who your enemy is and whether this is your last minute alive is fairly hard to comprehend. When some of these men finish their grim tour they also face an incomprehensible return to their lives and families who do not understand what they go through at all. Very thought provoking and even though I am not a war movie enthusiast I will see this movie again.

Organised the popcorn and turned the cinema sound up to get emersed into this gripping portrail of life as an IED expert in an unforgiving mortality based environment. Afterwards we spoke at length about the movie and I was suprised by how much he had taken in. We also enjoyed the DVD extra's. My son thought it was cool how the movie arrived in my letter box...and so did I. Thanks Quickflix.

A perfect lesson on why foreign soldiers should not be in Iraq. Do politicians ever see movies like this? The film well captures the randomness, confusion and capriciousness of war, but that in itself does not make for a good movie experience. Didn't think it lived up to what I'd heard about it. Quite well done but perhaps a bit predictable - starting to become a 'genre'. Acting ok but not outstanding.

This is one of the most compelling films I've ever seen. I saw it at the cinema more than 12 months ago and I can still remember so much of it. It is a real war film, not some cheesy genre piece like Green Zone. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I just didn't see the point in this movie. But maybe that's deliberate - that this war has no point? The main character was just plain annoying and the story didn't seem to lead anywhere. I even watched it twice to try to look a bit deeper but it didn't make any difference. It's OK as a snapshot of the war but it didn't resonate with me.

Terrific. A slightly different take on what it must be like in war.

Not your typical "blockbuster" action movie. This movie successfully portrays the real-life situations that soldiers face in Iraq. It doesn't have your typical timeline of an action movie either where there is a 15 minute car chase or war scence in the dying minutes and then the good guys win. The Hurt Locker seems to stay on one level for most of this movie, but still seems to draw in the viewer. Great movie which definitely opens your eyes to the realities of war!

WOW!! What can I say? This was an excellent movie, and really shows what our soldiers may be encountering on a daily basis.. Kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved every moment.

Fast, action packed and very tense - a good movie to watch on your own in a dark room.

The mood of this movie is one of discomfort and edginess. There is little overall structure and you don't know what is going to happen next. Also you don't know who the enemy is or what they look like. The characters themselves struggle to make sense of it all. The viewer never gets the chance to relax. This is exactly what the director is trying to convey because this is what it's like in modern day warfare in Iraq. The exposure to constant danger affects the characters and they react in different ways. However, the maverick sergeant who breaks the rules would not last two seconds in a real army, but don't let that dilute your enjoyment of this movie.

The strength of this film is in it's visuals and it's sound. It gives you some inkling of what it must be like to be a part of a bomb disposal team. The whole film is very tense. The problems I had with it were Jeremy Renner. I felt he was miscast. I also didn't think much of the lame script. Overall pretty good though. Not sure it was better than Avatar though.

Average war flick. GungHo Americans putting their lives on the line needlessly for reasons known only to themselves. Would any sane person sign up for one rotation, let alone a second ? You have the robot, why not use it ? Why go chasing baddies down dark lanes if you didn't have to ? Tale of courage ? Not for me. Stupidity yes.

For a movie that was held in such high praise by its makers peers I was a little disappointed at the result. Worth a look but nothing to rave about. Now Top Secret......there is a good war movie.

As interesting and at times suspenseful as this movie is, it really has no plot or storyline. Its "just a bunch of stuff that happens". Try to enjoy the ride without expecting a great ending.

This movie is definitely lacking something...oh, PLOT. That's it. No development of any character, and only a related set of bomb-diffusing events to hold the movie together. Extremely lame. Have to admit that the bombs do go off to great effect.

Brilliant. Watch this film. I liked Avatar, however have no doubt this film was a far more worthy recipient of the Best Film Oscar it received in 2010.

This MOvie is a JOKE! wHO gave the job of creating war in the world in the name of peace and order and gave the task to the Americans! R u kidding me? The Oscar to this movie just shows us how corrupt and disgusting the USA is and how they believe that their way of living should be for the rest of the world? Who are they to believe and brain wash us on this? ThEIR SUFFERING FOR PEACE! THEIR SUFFERING IS TO MAKE MONEY IS THEIR BUSINESS. Suffering is found in each and everyplace they touch! Facts are there to see. The rest of the world and other countries suffer thanks to their actions. The world would be best without them. Pls dont help the world we dont need their help. Keep it to themselves. American Nationalism, prejudice and brainwash. Americans need a mirror to themselves. Their civilization is coming to their end. Just like the Romans, they abuse everything! Universal law all has an end. If you believe the Americans are the police of the World you will enjoy this movie. If you believe and research and know enough to clearly see that the rest of the world suffers more with their intervention and that a lot of people more than the soldiers that die in their wars created with lies dies due to their actions you will hate this movie. Whoever to believes and pity and has compassion for this Violence and supports US ARMY has to question their own values. Deeply dissapointed on this movie. SAdly to see the american same record of "poor us, we suffer to keep you safe" Lies they create wars because is their business, thats how that country has grown by killing and stealing others their things and make the world believe they have the right to kill in the name of God, but others cant as they are the good ones! HOW SICK THEY ARE! DISGUSTED!

Considering the duration of the movie and not being a fan of Army, Soldier flicks, I was heaps surprised seeing myself enjoying The Hurt Locker. I understand why it got some academy awards. The actors are excellent and the tension is gripping. An excellent movie with the type of realistic feel to it. MUST SEE!

Don't waste your time. Cocky, tough men attempting to dissarm bombs in the war zone...sometimes they succeed (so let's have a drink to celebrate)...sometimes they don't (so let's have a drink to commiserate).... that's IT. I'd have given it a 0 but I needed to give it something after sitting through 2hrs of American egotistical S@#$T. How on earth did this win the award over Avitar??? Which was a beautiful fantasy movie... till (once again) the military began blowing everything up.

Set piece after set piece of tension filled build up and action. Just superb. I can't believe this film was made on a shoestring budget, it sure doesn't show. Having seen Avatar in 3D on the IMAX screen, I am still happy to say that The Hurt Locker was a worthy best picture winner. Amazingly real, well crafted and acted. Don't miss. Oh, and Mark N - you say that there is nothing fascinating about defusing bombs in a war zone. Are you fair dinkum? Love to know what job is fascinating...

As usual, the oscars is all political. I found this to a glorified war movie (another one!) with one set piece after another (albeit they were well done). There is/was never anything facinating about bomb defusing, even if it's in a war zone. Never are the characters intensions fully known, we are just led from one defusal to another and it's all marviously glorified, as only hollywood can serve up. It's all well made and the acting is good, so you don't have to worry about that. However, there are much better movies out there that don't glorify death

A superb, thought provoking film and one of the best I have seen in years. Wonderful acting and storyline and incredibly well directed. I am glad that the subject of this film is about the men of EOD as so many films of this genre cover just the line regiments. EOD have an unenvious task of dealing day to day with unexploded ordinance, IED's and suicide bombers. They are some of the unsung heroes of wars. I recommend this film to anyone who is interested in what our brave servicemen and women have to contend with when our respective governments send them to war. My top score 11/10.
