Actors: Dieter Laser, Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, Akihiro Kitamura

After their car breaks down during a storm in the German countryside, two young American women stumble upon an isolated villa. Offering to call them a taxi, the villas owner Dr. Heiter, a retired surgeon, invites the girls inside with the promise of a glass of water and dry place to wait for help to arrive. Too late they realize that there is something not quite right about their formidable host and the girls are plunged into a nightmare so bizarre that survival might not be worth the effort. As the deranged Doctor explains his twisted vision, the two girls discover that they are soon to become closer to each other than even BFFs would ever want to be. Heiters plan is to connect the two girls, along with a third person, a hapless Japanese tourist, to each other via their gastric systems in a daring bid to be the first person to create a Siamese triplet and bring to life the first sequence of a Human Centipede.

Was it Voltaire who said “I disapprove of your human centipede, but I will defend to the death your right to create it”? Yes, this is the movie in which three poor souls find themselves surgically attached anus-to-mouth on the whim of a crazed surgeon. The poster boasts that the film is “100% medically accurate”. Sure, ‘accurate’, but certainly not encouraged. It is a disgusting movie, but surely no one is sitting down to it expecting a Sandra Bullock-esque romcom. In fact, perhaps never before has a title provided such an accurate description of its contents. With all that being said, there is a certain unmistakable brilliance to Tom Six’s The Human Centipede. But first, to the plot! It’s your typical horror movie set up: Two young American girls – Lindsay (Ashley C. Williams) and Jenny ...

Williams) and Jenny (Ashlynn Yennie) embark on a Eurotrip with modest intentions, and find themselves trapped in the most horrific of situations. Their car breaks down (of course) and the closest abode belongs to a crazed surgeon (of course) who drugs them and chains them to some hospital beds in his basement (of course). The surgeon is Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser), who – for god knows what reason – has a penchant for conjoining dogs, and is now ready to work his magic on some human beings. He informs the two girls and his other prisoner Katsuro (Akihiro Kitamura) that they will be a part of his latest wonderful experiment: a human centipede. Strike that. THE human centipede.

And WHAT a human centipede! Three people (read: victims) joined end-to-end, forced to sustain themselves on the faecal matter of the person before them. The visual image of the centipede itself cannot be discounted as a valuable contribution to horror cinema, not unlike the famous sliced eye from Un Chien Andalou. The very sight of this monstrosity is so evocative you will have trouble ever scraping it from your memory. So, regardless of the rest of the film, top marks to Tom Six for burning our corneas forever.

We never learn the reasons why dirty Dr. Heiter wants to commit this atrocity. That doesn’t make this film more morally reprehensible than other slasher flicks, in which silent serial killers lay waste to scantily clad teenagers. In fact, The Human Centipede might even have a better moral center than those vengeance-fuelled films. There is absolutely nothing titillating here – no half-nude girls getting slaughtered after sleeping with their boyfriends. Nor does the film attempt to frighten us at any point; there are no jump-scares, no fake-outs and no satisfying, triumphant good-over-evil climax. Six drains his movie of everything we expect from a genre film. His camera moves dreamily, almost with a sense of defeatism. Yes, everything you are seeing is happening, and it cannot be stopped.

So what is the use of a genre film that doesn’t conform to the conventions of genre? Plenty. You know this movie is called The Human Centipede. You will watch the film knowing you will see a human centipede. And when it is over, you will be able to claim you have now seen a human centipede. The evocative title, the lack of motive and the absence of genre tropes are completely intentional – Six is giving us what we want, reminding us all the while that getting exactly what we want is usually the last thing we should ever really have. Basically, The Human Centipede is a better, more effective satire (experiment?) than Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.

The performance artist Marina Abramovic presented a piece at MoMa earlier in the year entitled ‘The Artist Is Present’, in which she sat silently at a table and invited museum patrons to sit across from her and stare. An entire blog has been devoted to the participants who have burst into tears. Is sitting motionless a work of art? No, but almost. As with any true work of art, it is only complete once it is deconstructed and experienced by another. Those patrons bring something indelible to that table – whether you think the whole thing is silly or not, you can’t deny their experience. The same goes for The Human Centipede. It’s not so much a film as a feat of endurance. And Tom Six isn’t so much a director as he is a ringmaster, pulling back the stage curtain and announcing to his audience: “I give you ... The Human Centipede”. Whether you look on in awe or hurl rotten tomatoes is redundant. Watching this film is to both experience it and validate it. A star rating for an experiment seems redundant. Regardless, I’ll give it four, or rather, 1.33 per link.

4/5

I started watching this movie and I got to the point where I knew something was about to happen. I paused the movie, went on Wikipedia and had a quick look at the plot. At that point I decided that I did not want to see what was going to happen. European horror movies are certainly more full on that anything they can think of in Australia or the US. So I have not watched it all and I do not intend to. I think I need to stick to happy movies for awhile.

Extreme and sick however not bad for a low budget. I liked the fact that they add a Japanese actor and plays with the culture difference. Alright the acting is not so good and it's not really scary but those who liked gore like the old Reanimator ...might like the madness. Don't take it seriously and you will realize that the acting, the story are actually quite absurd and funny. The bad guy plays his role like a Frankestein and the old Hammer Dracula... Not sure he actually knows how to act but surprisingly It is the reason why he looks like.out of this world. Definitely worth a watch!

Hmmm… reviewing the Human Centipede… what do I say? I had a lot of hesitations when watching this movie. Some friends had told me to stay away! I did my own research, read the plot, looked at some stills of the movie and decided to watch it. The title says it all – it’s about a Human Centipede. There were a few moments where I cringed but, I was always able to look at the screen. The characters were engaging – especially toward the end. It was intriguing. And disturbing. But when you know how the concept came about, it’s not as to watch as what some might make it out to be. I think more could have been done with this movie. A lot more. I will watch number 2.

It's hard to know just quite what to say about this film. Disturbing? Yes. Sickening? Yes. Scary? No. I don't find myself checking under my bed for a mad German Dr planning on connecting me to someone else's anus... Thankfully. I watched it out of curiosity after reading and hearing all the hype surrounding it. It is definitely worthy of the controversy! Think I'll pass on the sequel though...

The fact that this film stays with you makes it an important experience, would you want to be the middle? back? or head? It seems many people considered it unrealistic, but being a Europe setting invites perceptions of euro trash fetishes to lend an air of authenticity. Also the actor that played the doctor said he wasn't going for the mad scientist angle but rather the real horror of Dr Mengele. He did it so well my partner got the feeling this was a snuff film and searched IMDB to make sure the victims had done other stuff since this film. Four stars it just falls short of perfection because it shy's away from opportunities for more gore and some of the more logistical problems are not satisfactorily explained.

This movie was recommended to me because i'm a big fan of twisted psyc movies that don't involve to much blood but still gory. The opening scenes were enough for me to judge the movie, a "disaster". The acting was very bad that it ruined the whole movie. I don't mind low budget movies but I hate low budget movies that sell the movie a cheap and this was a very cheap movie. The story could have been good but the acting, setting and direction made the screen play horrible.

If you want a movie with brilliant acting and a good solid storyline, then it probably isn't the right choice for you. On the other hand, if you want to see a movie that is original, bizarre and twisted. LOOK NO FURTHER. The Human Centipede will disturb and entertain you from start to finish. You might want to keep the mouthwash handy though, because this one will definitely leave a bad taste in your mouth!

I wouldn't recommend watching this movie, it is really disturbing, sick and just plain wrong in every sense. In addition, some of the acting particularly from the two female leads wasn't that great and got quite annoying at times. I didn't know what the story was before I watched it, and I wish now that I hadn't seen it. Don't watch unless you enjoy things that are seriously sick and twisted.

After reading all of the hype on this movie and friends of mine telling me just how awful and disturbing it was to watch I couldn't wait to watch it The concept itself is quite interesting - it's a shame that the movie itself is so awful. What's awful about it? Well the 2 main female 'actors' do not play realistic roles at all, not their fault but just a bad script and equally bad acting. From the start it feels like a corny typical horror movie. (After all, what kind of movie opens up with the girl on the phone saying 'Hi. Yes, um, I was wondering if I could get driving directions to a nightclub called Bunker. Yes, Bunker. How exactly would I get there?). Of course their car breaks down and of course they find help 'just over the hill' which just so happens to be a crazy doctors house. Like I said before, the concept of this movie is great - but I think if the story was a little more realistic (maybe if a family got kidnapped or something like that, instead of american tourists), if we were shown a bit more of the actual surgery and had a bit more of a description on how his plan was to work, maybe if one of them survived and lived to tell the tale? Most of the gore is hidden unfortunately!

Neither as disturbing or as twisted as I'd been lead to beleive, Human Centipede is instead just a really bad film. Bad script, bad acting and plotholes you could walk a human centipede through sideways. You spend the first ten minutes of the film getting to know two American women only to have them relegated to non-speaking roles for the rest of the story, and it goes downhill from there.

This is the worst film I have come across on Big Pond movies and I deeply feel none will top this train wreak. 2 tourists are stranded going to a party and are unlucky enough to find the house of the villian of this film and must fight there way out. The worst acting to date with everyone looking bored or wishing they were out having actural fun instead of waiting for their paychecks. The direction falls apart very quickly and the film feels like a childish attempt to top Salo or Cannibal holocaust in gross out factor and misses by a mile coming off more forced and childish then offensive. Oddly not much violence and whats there is tame. It doesnt even deliver in the obvious way either.A horrible ending is the fuse lit to this bomb. Def one bargin basement filler to aviod. I really hated it and usually I love horror and strong disturbing stuff but this was a sad joke.
