Winner of 5 Oscars, Hugo is the story of an orphan boy living in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Having learned how to fix clocks and other gadgets from his father and uncle, he puts those skills to use by keeping the train station clocks running. The only thing left that connects him to his dead father is an automaton (mechanical man) that doesn't work without a special key. Hugo needs to find the key in order to unlock the secret he believes the automaton contains. On his adventures, he meets with a shopkeeper, George Melies, who works in the train station toy shop, and his adventure-seeking god-daughter. Hugo finds that they have a surprising connection to his father and the automaton.

The magic man
by Simon Miraudo,

Martin Scorsese is arguably cinema’s biggest fanboy. The cliché is that he's only concerned with telling tales of gangsters getting by in his native New York. However, he's spent more of his time saving legendary prints of classic and long-thought-lost films. Although it may seem a departure for him to direct a family flick like Hugo, its focus on cinematic restoration and the magical influence of the silver screen means it’s well and truly in his wheelhouse. There’s even an academic character (Michael Stuhlbarg) who waxes lyrical about the halcyon days of silent picture shows whilst adorned with a 70s-era Scorsese beard. Hugo is an enchanting celebration of the movies and the magic-men who create them. Perhaps what's sweetest about it - what with its fawning over legendary directors - is ...

Perhaps what's sweetest about it - what with its fawning over legendary directors - is that Scorsese doesn't seem to realise he is among them.

Hugo moves to the rhythm of a different time, introducing us to the main players and Parisian train station setting with an overture by composer Howard Shore in a near-wordless prologue. We see young urchin Hugo Cabret (excellent newcomer Asa Butterfield) sneaking around the station, setting the clocks, and avoiding the gaze of war-wounded Inspector Gustav (Sacha Baron Cohen). He spies the different characters carrying on with their lives just slightly out of his reach, including sad toy maker Georges (Ben Kingsley) and his erudite goddaughter Isabelle (Chloë Grace Moretz). Inside his tiny abode above the action, Hugo works on a broken automaton once discovered by his now-deceased father (Jude Law). By stealing nuts and bolts from Georges, he believes he will be able to figure out how to get the machine working once more, and receive a final message from his dad. Instead, the automaton reveals to him the true identity of its maker – Georges, or rather, legendary filmmaker and conjurer Georges Méliès – and offers Hugo the opportunity to reinspire the deflated director and escape into the movies once more.

Screenwriter John Logan had the thorny task of adapting Brian Selznick's 533 page tome The Invention of Hugo Cabret for the screen, but Scorsese certainly suffered a similar uphill battle in recreating the experience of diving in to the much-loved book (I've not read it, but Selznick's comic/flipbook approach sounds fairly novel, pun always intended). Although its two halves - a boy searching for his father's message; an artist rediscovering his talents - don't quite mesh into a cogent whole, Logan and Scorsese's efforts are undeniably marvellous. When Méliès' films begin to fuse with reality during a climactic projection of his back catalogue, you can practically feel time stop in sync with the audience's halted breath. It's nothing short of wizardry.

Marty's frequent collaborator, cinematographer Robert Richardson, and his right-hand-woman, editor Thelma Schoonmaker, aid greatly in putting together all the different parts and keeping track of all the moving pieces. Thanks also to the talented cast of Kingsley, Moretz, Butterfield, Stuhlbarg, Helen McCrory (as Georges' wife) and, to a lesser degree, Baron-Cohen (he's just a touch broader than those around him), Hugo is supremely moving and heart-warming.

(This is all I'll say about the 3-D: though Scorsese always knows where to put the camera, and employs it in innovative and interesting ways, I still endured a couple brief bouts of vertigo and had to remove my glasses accordingly. There are numerous call-backs to the 1895 screening of the Lumière brothers' Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, where the crowd literally thought the locomotive was hurtling off the screen and into their laps. But even if the 3-D is artistically justified, it doesn't mean it's any less annoying or distracting to wear those silly glasses. When will this madness end!)

4.5/5

I loved this film. I thougt that it was going to take me on a particualr journey, but then it changed direction and took me somewhere completely different. A magical film, both in the storytelling and visually. excellent cast with a number of very fine actors in more minor roles. this film was an unexpected joy for me!

Enchanting, engaging, thoroughly enjoyable journey. It was a pleasure to watch this movie. To feel the landscape move through my living room, to see the sights and lights of Paris in a time long gone. To meet Hugo, his automaton and the other members of the train station community. I enjoyed relaxing and becoming absorbed in this film, it is in no hurry.

Given the content of the film, it's easy to see why David Stratton gave it 5 stars [and Margaret 4-1/2] - it's right up his street. Although Scorcese directed, I didn't expect a "Goodfella's" type story - but this was tedious and drawn out. After the famous clip from a Harold Lloyd film, did I not expect the boy to do much the same sort of stunt with the large clock - so ruddy obvious! Martin, hopefully you're next film effort, will be much better!

At the risk of sounding like philistines I have to say we thought it was very slow and long (feels even longer), terrible acting and a weird lame story. Didn't really enjoy the movie. Not sure what all the high praise is all about.

As intended it is a visual feast best viewed at the big screen or on a very good one at home. The film has a relatively gentle story that is neither dull nor predictable. A great one for even for kids who will enjoy the show if not the story. I would argue even the slow bits allow you relax and take in the detail.

Hugo was a delight to watch. It had lots of quirky scenes and clever and fun lines. The plot was interesting. I thought the actors really matched their characters and the lively film settings which always makes a film captivating. This "storybook" film is one for all the family and those of us that are kids at heart.

everything was good in this, acting, story, etc. the problem with this movie is that when it was released all thye critics were saying how the 3D effects were spectacular.....blah, blah, blah. ....the problem with 3D movies is that some scenes are only in the movie because it looks good in 3D. they don't help the story, or the acting. part of hugo is about how when movies were first shown, the audience ducked and screamed when a train was shown in a cinema on screen for the first time. i suppose the director was going for this as well. i'm not going to pay extra money at the cinema to see a 3D movie that critics say are the best 3D effects ever. they may be the best 3D effects......until the next 3D movie comes out.

There's something magical about this film, and I think what that magic is is that it is able to evoke the atmosphere of the cinematic 'event'. I remember how much I loved seeing "Willy Wonka..." in my childhood (yes in 1971!) at the cinema, and I feel that "Hugo" brings that same awe and fascination to the screen. Hugo is one of those movies to watch again and again.

I loved it. A warm and moving family movie that follows a young boy whose inspiration, motivation and creative mind brought him out of the shadows and back into the light. Both my 12 & 13 yr old girls enjoyed it. I think it's for children that are 12 yrs and up as they will understand and enjoy the story a lot more than a younger audience who may find it hard to follow and comprehend.

This movie really divides the reviewers, (as per the reviews below), you're either in the "love it" or "hate it" category, with no inbetween. I loved it, but agree it lost a lot of its lustre by being on the small screen. This one was definately made for the big screen & in the full 3D effect. That aside, I thought it was brilliantly written, directed & acted. For me, its a "don't miss".

My husband like this so much he's going to buy a copy and he usually sticks to Clint Eastwood type movies... me, just a big yawn. Yes, special effects , quality filming, good names in the cast, interesting characters (though not really explored) but also a weak and confusing story, unnecessary details, incorrect historical details, wishy washy ending .... It just didn't make sense.

This is definitely a difficult movie to review. If you are in the movie profession, a movie critic or a cinema buff/historian, you'll probably really love this movie. It's a terrific homage to the lineage of cinema traced back to the landmark silent films. Movies that are skilfully made and celebrate the movie industry and are well executed tend to get positive critical reviews. Robert Altman's The Player and Tim Burton's Ed Wood come to mind. It's all a bit self-congratulatory. As a piece of cinema for the mainstream, these movies tend to miss their mark. And unfortunately, this movie suffers from the same problem. I love Martin Scorsese's work, and I did appreciate this movie, but it was too drawn out and didn't hold enough interest to really hold your attention. I doubt whether kids would find this movie very rewarding, compared to other offerings which have faster pace and more entertainment. So be very careful when choosing this movie. If you are prepared for a slow burn pacing, you will find the reward there. If you are watching it with your kids, expect their attention to wonder, if they haven't already dozed off. 5 Stars if you are a cinema aficionado, but only 3 stars for the rest of us mortals.

As can be seen by the varying reviews below be careful with this one. My granddaughter (9) fell asleep, My Grandson (11) said ":just OK". I (64) was disappointed after all the awards hype. Scorsese got carried away with the special effects which were great but the storyline was slow, predictable, corny, lack luster and the characters did not not mesh. Jude Law appears for about 2 minutes, Kinsley & the boy did not "gell" neither did the bland part of Cohen with the other characters. Overall expected more but it didn't happen. Not recommended

was probably mildly interesting for the two people for whom it was written. could have done with either more humour to appeal to children or more action and tragedy to appeal to middle upper class art students, or perhaps more mindless violence to give it ma15 rating for the couch potatoes.as it was, however, pretty slow and predictable and only watched to the end out of sheer hope.

Adults tend to find this movie slow but then it's not for us. Hugo is for kids - period. Hugo is also for kids with huge imaginations and deep emotions. This is a wonderful tale of magic, illusion and dreams. This is one boys search to find out what's he's put on the earth for and he finds it in the work of George Melies one of early cinemas grand pioneers. Like all good kids stories there is darkness and death but also wonder and the power of love. While kids love the automaton, adults will more likely find humour in Sacha Baron Cohen's station guard. It's a quietly nuanced performance that had me laughing on many occasions. Wonderfully quirky British characters fill the background while Asa Butterfield commands the lead role in a clever and winning way. Love it:)

What a wonderful film story to remind us of where movies began. Clean family friendly movie that will have you gasp now and again! To enable an audience to suspend their disbelief and be moved to a time gone by. There are no big special effects, it is a simple true story that if you are willing to be the child again.....forget fast moving action and enjoy a story - much like reading a book it is fantastic.

There was so much hype about this movie when it was released and I have to confess I was slightly disappointed after seeing the movie. Yes, it is beautifully made and has a wonderful reallife background story (that I was unaware of until I Googled 'Georges Melies' after seeing the movie) but it is definitely on the slow side and charmingly old-fashioned, being set in Paris in 1931. Not a movie for younger children (too slow and boring for most), I thought my boys 10 & 13 would be bored stiff, however much to my surprise, they enjoyed it. I enjoyed Sacha Baron Cohen's slapstick antics but found young Chloe Moretz irritating - far too perfect and goody-two-shoes. (Have fun spotting actors from the Harry Potter movies!)

There were two ways to go with this movie, tinsel town (equals money) or something equating closer to realism, but dire. I found this Disney style version to be underwhelming. It was just all too twee. The interior of the many clocks a twelve year old boy was supposed to be maintaining were spotless and you could go on forever, but you can forgive all these things because it was a "fairy story" even if it really wasn't. It had a dual personality. The usually brilliant Sacha Baron Cohen didn't nail the part of nasty Station Guard and and he had the weirdest of accents, almost sounding Australian at times. I found the boy pretty annoying at times and no one has eyes that blue. 5 Oscars?.....they must have been going cheap that week.

Beautiful. The opening, Paris, the Station. Was strange to see Sasha Baron Cohen with what I guess was his normal accent. So used to him doing strange characters. Also he kind of reminded me of the the French officer from Allo' Allo' - Good Moaning..... Couple of plotholes, there was more to Georges reaction to seeing the images in the notebook than just being a grumpy old man. But the visual beauty of the film kept me watching.

What a fabulous movie - beautiful in 3D. My 6 and 8 year old viewers loved it and talked about it for weeks! Would recommend it to all for the whole family! Wish there were more movies of this quality for kids

Not for young children it would be boring for them. I thought it was about a robot and a boy not what I expected. However the picture had some beautiful magical shots there were parts that are sad and you do feel part of the movie. Older children would enjoy this movie.

This is a truly magical film. The special effects are fantastic - you almost feel transported into the Paris station setting. It is a rare treat and suitable for the whole family. We watched it twice.

A movie that's far too long for the very minor and boring story that it is. By the time there's some interesting material on the history of movies it's way too late to save the film. Along the way there are far too many irrelevant and non-sensical scenes. The worst involve Sacha Baron Cohen, whose character is annoying, ridiculous and quite out of place. His appearance destroys the mood of the film every time. All the acting is rather mechanical and forced, which at least fits the story, albeit unintentionally.

Nice movie, perhaps hyped somewhat up. I thought it was a nice store, a bit predictable and slow. My kids enjoyed it

I had been dying to see this film after several recommendations from friends and family members. We watched it in 3D, and it certainly is a beautiful film to watch. The filming and CG are matched perfectly, and the 3D treatment is free of gags. The film itself I found perplexing for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was about 30 minutes too long. The film itself I found perplexing for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was about 30 minutes too long. Character development was unsettling in some ways for such a long film: Sacha Baron Cohen as Inspector Gustave managed to work in some smut, Christopher Lee as Monsieur Labisse is at first sinister and intimidating, then all of a sudden kind to Hugo. Someone as unfamiliar as the reviewer is with the book from which the film is adapted may be bewildered by the multiple directions and vignettes that are scattered through the film. The viewer is constantly wondering which of them will carry the plot forward, but none of them do. Even though this is some of the best eye candy available today, I couldn't give it 3 stars. I recommend Tin Tin in 3D for a far more entertaining ride, beautifully animated and visually on par with Hugo.

I thought this was a heartwarming story, and a tribute to the early days of film-making was good to see. Might not be for everyone, but would probably be outstanding in 3D

I requested this one for the Grandchildren Breanna 8yrs & Hayden 11yrs but neither of them found it very interesting and I have to admit I was expecting alot better from the write ups I'd seen.

Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. What a letdown. I fell asleep halfway through. This film could have been cut by an hour which would have given it some gutso

I saw this at the movies in 3D, which was superbly handled. It's a heart-warming tale with two threads that become increasingly intertwined. There is the orphan boy who needs to find his place in the world and there is the faded movie maker who needs to get his mojo back. It's beautifully set and wonderfully acted but the plot is predictable and it is basically a kid's movie, albeit for grown-ups.

An orphan living at the Paris Railway Station uncovers a magical past. A homage to early cinema that is notable for its recreation of Paris in the 1920’s. Nice but oddly lifeless. 3.5 stars

Wow!, what an adventure. Martin Scorsese has done it again. Hugo is a magically heartwarming story. A cinematic masterpiece which pays homage to what cinema used to be. The special effects are amazing , the way the camera moves is just so fluid, you feel like you're flying. The acting by all is superb especially by Butterfield and Moretz. Hopefully you all got to see this at the cinema in stunning 3D. It was the most amazing use of 3D i've seen by far.
