Boys of summer

How I Ended This Summer is a frustrating movie. It is unspeakably gorgeous to behold, endlessly enthralling … and yet, all I can think about is the immense stupidity of its protagonist. Grigoriy Dobrygin stars as Pavel, a young, airheaded meteorologist working an extended shift at an isolated Arctic station with the expert Sergei (Sergei Puskepalis). The duo butt heads, but Sergei eventually trusts Pavel enough to man the station while he goes on an impromptu fishing trip. While Sergei is away, Pavel dare not play, especially after he receives a devastating message from home base: Sergei’s wife and son have died in a car accident. Pavel is ordered to tell Sergei as soon as he returns, and they must wait for a ship to arrive and take them home. But let’s take a quick break from the plot to...

But let’s take a quick break from the plot to describe what is most wonderful about this film, and that is the cinematography by DOP Pavel Kostomarov. He uses his lens to film absurdly long-shots, and takes advantage of the film’s deliberate pace to feature extended single takes. Thanks to Kostomarov and director Alexei Popogrebsky, How I Ended This Summer is a marvel of visual composition.

Less effective is the characterisation, specifically of young Pavel, whose never-ending sequence of outrageously stupid decisions make Greg Focker seem as cool, calm and collected as Don Draper. He begins by refusing to tell Sergei of his family’s passing. Fair enough – it’s a tough sell, and I certainly don’t envy his position. But we know that Sergei will eventually find out, and the later it is revealed, the angrier and more violent he will become. Thus, that disastrous piece of information floats between them for much of this film like a ticking time bomb that we genuinely dread going off. But it feels insincere, especially as it becomes blindingly apparent that Pavel has no real reason for keeping the news hidden, and certainly not to the extent that he continues the charade of hiding it from his co-worker.

When the news is finally imparted, the duo devolves into murderous adversaries with a particularly bad case of Arctic madness. The film’s final third is undeniably thrilling, but by this point the machinations of the plot have well and truly shuddered and clanged into view. Popogrebsky defends his characters decisions, claiming that they are consistent with the actions of people caught in the isolation of the Arctic tundra. Maybe we urban folk will never truly understand the motivation for such madness. If you’re able to suspend your expectations of reasonable characterisation, How I Ended This Summer is a haunting, thrilling experience. If you demand reasonable motivations, you’ll find it exasperating. I guess I’m somewhere in the middle.

3/5

A couple of meteorologists at a remote Russian weather station find their relationship deteriorating after a tragedy. Although visually interesting the story isn’t particularly convincing given the motives remain unclear. A sort of mood piece. 3.5 stars

I enjoy a slow-moving movie if it's got a good story & good acting behind it, but the first half of this movie was as exciting as watching paint dry, it made The Tree of Life look action-packed! The 2nd half was more interesting simply because of a very supenseful cat & mouse chase between the two lead actors, but my husband & I were both quite bewildered as to the motives of each character, as there was no explanation in the minimal dialogue. In a word - BORING! Hard to fathom that it has won so many awards.

Don't bother. Nice photography but that's all it offered. The film reminded me of the deathly slow panning often found in French films, probably best watched intermittently or whilst on recreational drugs, neither of which I do. Don't waste your time

Remember to go to "set up" before watching the movie and select English subtitles on. I agree with the review by Simon Mirando, three stars for scenery / location/cinematography. It is about "arctic madness", as Simon Mirando has mentioned. Slightly reminiscent of Tarkovsky's movies, such as Solaris, Stalker, etc. Overall slightly disappointing, slow and incoherent /illogical plot. But I suppose madness is not logical... There are some director's comments in the extra features, of interest, explaining for instance what is "isotope beacon".

This film drew me in slowly with it's beauty and simplicity. You could feel the stress and tension building between the two characters due to the isolation of the arctic and this leads to the rather rapid decline of sanity with Pavel. Fear of Sergei and his obvious mood swings, led Pavel to not tell him the terrible news of his wife and son. Would he be shot by Sergei as had happened previously between two Russian workers? This fear leads him into a state of paranoia. The cinematography of this movie was stunning and the acting was great.

I couldn't get into this movie. I watched it to the end but not enough really happened in it. I wouldn't bother with it.

Turned it off after about 25 mins. Very slow. It's supposed to be a thriller. Perhaps I was too impatient......

I knew this was going to be slow and prepared my husband for the same. It's a really great portrayal of going out of your mind.

The cinematography / scenery were amazing and I enjoyed the film overall and the tension was thick and gorgeous throughout... but I really thought the story just took a leap of absurdity by failing to give adequate motivation for the actions of the characters, well, one character, Pavel. Why on earth Pavel was so determined not to pass on the news, and to prevent Sergei from hearing the news from others at the radio base was never really explained. Has Sergei done something in the past to make Pavel fear him? Is Pavel just a HORRIBLE BLOODY PERSON? It's a beautiful - looking film and I think its worthwhile at the very least for seeing some amazing and beautiful shots, the film overall was nice, but personally I could have done with cutting the time and adding more logic, or at the very least, seeing more through Sergei's eyes than Pavel's.

Wasn't aware that this film was not in English - managed to watch the first 40 minutes, so very boring and definately not a thriller at all - perhaps it gets better, but it was just so slow, we gave up on it.

What a mixed bag. Stunning cinematography, some extremely slow views that somehow captured the viewer's thoughts. Strongly drawn characters. But the script (and editing?) did not blend with or extend the very good bits. Partly the timing - moved in tiny bits and then leapt miles; partly the logic - why was he afraid to pass on the news? why did he get so paranoid? Why did the person who was to suffer from hearing the news, act with such equanimity when he finally found out? Why was the base so inept at reaching them? And what did the radioactivity, introduced at the very end, have to do with anything? And what was the news anyway? Were they dead or simply injured?

This is the best film I've seen all year. It takes a while to get going but that's all part of the build up. A psychological thriller up there with the best of them. Brilliant!

I really felt this movie failed to deliver on it's reviews in the media. It lacked direction and cohesion of the characters. Was really looking forward to seeing this film after hearing so much about it but was left quite disappointed.

This was definitely excruciatingly slow and drawn out, however I presume that is what living the life portrayed in such isolation would be - excruciatingly slow and drawn out. Therefore from that perspective this movie was amazing. The cinematrography was also done in long, long segments - but was absolutely beautiful in a rather bleak and grim way. I can see why this received the award/s. A little difficult to watch, however difficult as it may be to sit through - in my view it was a pretty amazing film. Certainly not for everybody - if you're not prepared for a slow and bleak movie then this is definitly not one to watch.

A very odd movie about a very odd inter-personal conflict in the very place on earth where conflict should be avoided. The story develops slowly and painstakingly and doesn't make a lot of sense.
