Great Horror/Schlok film. Filled all expectations for a horror film. Had some faults on 2 parts of the film, but got over them to enjoy my nightly dose of horror. HATE getting faulty DVD's from this company though :(
The first hour or so was boring and predictable, with annoying characters that you don't care about. However, the last half an hour truly got my pulse racing. Not as good as the Saw franchise, but definitely lives up to its reputation in the horror genre.
disturbing depraved puts you right off hostels if travelling great and very gory loved it
The first half of the movie has no plot development and is basically breasts and more female nudity. The 2nd half gets better, but to say it is in the same league as Saw or Wolf Creek is a bit far fetched. There is no suspense, and the plot is predictable.
love horrors this was a good movie I would watch it again
This movie played every trick in the book to be shocking. Failed due to bad acting, bad story, bad everything. A complete load of disgusting gore-fest junk.
Small budget film, but great story - makes you scared to travel to Eastern Europe - good revenge ending though.....
This film was horrendous to watch. It has certainly put me off watching horror films for a while. Give a "Chick Flick" anyday!!
I'm not sure what to say about this film. The characters were shallow and annoying for the most part, however the storyline was gripping for the last half and our predictions in the first 30 minutes were completely inaccurate. Great if you love horror and don't mind obnoxious American males.
If you like gratuitous violence and nudity, then this is the film for you! Light on plot, with a story revolving around 3 American tourists who get kidnapped and tortured after arriving at a strange and creepy youth hostel. Characters are essentially one-dimensional and boring, but the film is actually well-made. Could have been better.
My wife and I both enjoyed Hostel - lots of scary effects - the cgi effects were outstanding. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes this genre.
The depiction of explicit violence is nothing new (see 60's cult director Herschell Gordon Lewis). What makes this movie different is that such explicitness is now mainstream, big budget and receives wide release. The movie starts well building up tension but, like many of these types of films, loses it to some extent by showing scene after scene of violence until it becomes predictable. Nevertheless, it is well made and open to intrepretation by those so inclined.
This movie would rate highly in the gore factor but was lacking in the suspense factor. I enjoy more of the SAW type movies that have both less gore and more suspense.
I wouldn't have rested until i had seen this movie but if you have a sensitive stomach i wouldn't recommend it.Truly horrific, gory and did make me dry reach which is never really worth it, is it?
Lame. No story line. More for shock value than anything else.
If you are squeamish then don't watch this DVD, as the last half hour contains the most disgusting and depraved violence I have ever seen on film. I felt uncomfortable watching this to the end. The movie itself is well made, but this is not what I call entertainment.
Bizarre but what else would you expect from Tarantino. The movie lacked in storyline. Just when it gets gory it starts to make sense.
This movie was tamer than I had been led to believe, nevertheless it did have its eye shutting moments. Loved the ending.
I turned it off! Absolutely stupid and disgusting in beginning.
Vicious and violent to the extreme. Did not invoke any positive emotion in me at all. The violence is senseless but you can imagine it actually happening somewhere in our society.
I loved it bits made me sick the horror was fantastic!! The best I have seen in ages. If you love gore & gross this is a BIG MUST SEE
This film is rubbish. After all the hype, I had looked forward to seeing it as I'm a big horror movie fan. Very disappointing!! The "Saw" series is brilliant by comparison. To be avoided at all costs.
I have been a fan of Eli Roth's work since Cabin Fever and found this film is one of his best. 3 horny young guys go looking for to get laid and end up going to a Hostel after being booted from a club(a fight) and their hotel after a stranger tells them there are ladies looking for hot amercians for sex with no strings attached. They meet a strange yet handsome gentleman who alarms them with his sudden pass at one of them. They find out the place is a setup for a thrill kill business for profit.
Excellant acting thou Jan Vlasak was badly miscast as a killer(he usualy plays good guys and bad is not his bag he looks more like someones Uncle then a killer plus hes a handsome guy), excellant effects and quite savage in places thou thats usualy what I like but perhaps a bit too much female nudity (I would have prefered to see Jan's bod but that's who I am and not the point of this review) but overall its a powerful film and well worth a view but not for the faint hearted
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I liked this movie. Many young guys to readily relate to the first 30 minutes as a trio of friends do their European tour thing. But then it just descends into grotesque and gorey cinema. Sure he's capitalising on Wolf Creek and Saw but it kept me nailed to my seat for the whole show. Totally socially irredeemable.
Who thinks of this type of movie? As gross as the plot goes this one keeps your heart pumping and you just can't believe that someone could think up such a concept. You just keep telling yourself this is a movie, but can't help wondering could this type of depravity really go on?
Definitely not for those about to back-pack through Europe or with weak stomachs! Decent story with a few gory twists & turns, and although it took until halfway through the movie to actually show the gory bits, I couldn't look away. One for the boys I think!
One of the best movies of 2005.
Not a good movie at all. I thought it was just trying to "cash in" on the Saw movies ,except this is totally devoid of any storyline. When it starts you think it is about drugs, then moves into porn and finishes up a "gore fest" Quentin Tarantino must have needed the money to be involved in this crap in any shape or form. Don't bother !
Where was the horror in this one, it was just a gore fest, started off like a european porno movie and progressed into just blood and guts and body parts. An extremely boring story line. Don't waste your time with this one, I couldn't wait till it finished so I could go to bed, a great way to cure insomnia, I reckon because it put me to sleep. yawn.
