Strong sexual references and coarse language

Director: Seth Gordon
Actors: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Donald Sutherland, Lindsay Sloane, Ioan Gruffudd, Jamie Foxx, Julie Bowen, Isaiah Mustafa, Wendell Pierce, Bob Newhart

For Nick (Jason Bateman) Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option so with the benefit of a few too many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers...permanently. There's only one problem: even the best-laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

by Simon Miraudo,

Can murder ever be funny? Absolutely. Just ask the Coen brothers, who have spun some of the vilest, most violent attacks in cinema history into comic gold (see: Burn After Reading, Fargo but not The Ladykillers). Of course, the killers in those aforementioned films are hardly sympathetic, so perhaps the question should be: Can movie murderers ever be likable? Ah, now we’re narrowing it down. A quick Google search of ‘funniest movie murders’ returns 17,800,000 hits, while ‘likable movie murderers’ offers a mere 852,000 pages. Perhaps Hollywood doesn’t believe audiences will identify with a murderous protagonist, hence the few movie heroes plotting cold-blooded execution (excluding those lovable paid assassins). The irony is … we would! If cinema can be enjoyed as a form of wish-fulfillment,...

If cinema can be enjoyed as a form of wish-fulfillment, then such films would definitely appeal to that little voice at the back of our heads that ponders – even if just for a second – what it would be like to dispatch of that enemy, undo the existence of that chatty cinemagoer, or take sweet revenge on your obnoxious supervisor.

With that, we arrive at Seth Gordon’s Horrible Bosses, a comedy about likable wannabe-murderers; perhaps the best film about such a subject, but, as established, maybe the only one too. Nick (Jason Bateman) lives to work; he’s happy putting in outrageously long hours if that means he can one day reach the top of the pyramid at his office. To do that, he’ll need to eat the, erm, excrement of his jerk boss Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey), and lots of it (not literally though; this isn’t a Tom Six film). His high school buddies, Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis), are similarly outranked by terrible human beings at their workplaces. Dale is a dental assistant to Dr. Julia Harris (Jennifer Aniston), a psychotic maneater who confuses rape threats with gentle flirts. Kurt, meanwhile, is not only mourning the death of his sage-like factory boss Jack Pellitt (Donald Sutherland), but is forced to contend with Jack’s newly-promoted cocaine-addled douchebag son Bobby (Colin Farrell). After downing a few too many beers and sharing their war stories, the guys jokingly suggest that their lives would be better if their superiors were dead. The seed, albeit ridiculous, has been planted, and the trio slowly considers how to go about taking Dave, Julia and Bobby out of the picture. After speaking with murder consultant ‘Motherf*****’ Jones (Jamie Foxx), they decide to kill one another’s bosses, Strangers on a Train style.

If the film works at all – and it mostly does – it’s because of Bateman’s performance (speaking of sympathetic: he could have played Patrick Bateman and made him seem adorable). His boss is the only one that seems like a comic exaggeration of a real person (kudos also goes to Spacey for hamming it up in style), and his frustrations evolve into a quiet rage that make his evolution into a killer (or at least an almost-killer) believable. Aniston and Farrell both play awful creatures, and are fun in the roles, but don’t seem to be cut from the cloth of any real human beings that I’ve ever seen. Day’s Dale and Sudeikis’ Kurt are nice comic foils, but despite having even more of a reason than Nick to kill their bosses, they seem to be mostly going along for the ride. The problem here is with the screenplay (first by Michael Markowitz, then rewritten by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein), which isn’t as dark or raunchy as it should be. Sure, it’s funny, but not nearly as funny as it should be. It relies too often on coincidence; the lazy-kind, not the tragic-damnation-of-the-cosmos kind employed by the Coens. At one point, the screenwriters seem to forget completely that Aniston’s Dr. Harris is even a character in this film. Gordon maintains a peppy vibe (which doesn’t quite mesh with the film’s themes) but keeps things moving fast enough for us to at least momentarily forget about the machinations of the plot as they’re happening.

Will Horrible Bosses herald a new age of movies in which we get sympathetic heroes with at least one murderous bone in their body? Maybe. The trio of hopeful-killers here are indeed likable, but their targets never really seem human, so their plans don’t seem out of the realm of relatability. Horrible Bosses seems to be afraid of its own premise; it sells itself short and avoids all risks. Although it may not be a new landmark in movie comedy, it offers enough laughs to warrant a viewing (although I suspect you’ll have a better time discussing it with friends later, and sharing tales of your nightmare workplace, and toying with some very bad decisions of your own).

3/5

Awful try at a Hangover style movie - moved the bar ever higher with crude and unrelenting disgusting "jokes". A waste of acting talent with the likes of Spacey in this. I wouldn't bother watching it as it fails badly in plot, character development (all heros I wanted to strangle as they were so annoying).

Formula, formula, formula. To me this felt like a heavily-watered down Hang-over. BTW what do you call a Chik Flik for the Boys? If there isn't a term it's about time we came up with it. Anyway If Hollywood is going to do a remake, there should be some board over there who stipulate that it must be BETTER than the original ... or at least funnier. Yes Bateman was cute and earned the empathy of the audience, but just because Anniston plays a different role to her stock-standard one, that does not mean she can act. Yes girls, the male interest next to you will probably love this, as it's blatently obvious that it was exclusively written by and aimed at those Y chromosomes. Most girls won't enjoy the unrealistic female stereotypes. But yes I did laugh enough to not regret the two hours invested.

There are two things about this movie: First its not bad but it is not a big screen movie it is a very good night in. When watching this its hard for me not to compare this with the Hangover (parts Un and Deux). Both are part of the new American Teenager at 38 genre that is floating around but this has some greater writing, better humour and far more interesting characters (including the sat nav). On a lower budget I'm sure though Kevin Spacey's & Jennifer Aniston's (partially) undeserved paypacket(s) probably kicked it higher this film made me LAUGH (out loud). Chuck the series Secondly as I watch it the quirky little guy in the film (Charlie Day) kept reminding me of the Morgan Grimes character in the Chuck series as he was earlier on but didn't remain in later episodes - could have been almost interchangeable. I do not want to take away from Charlie Day he was good and funny and his character would have been a perfect Morgan. Conclusion I loved the horrible bosses they were horrible and the movie was funny.

This movie is your typical 21st century 'Guy Pal' type comedy. Take one everyday guy, add a reasonably good looking guy, don't forget your loose canon guy - stick into the mix some racial minorities we can stereotype, plenty of drug references, liberal use of the F word (We've got our MA rating and we're gonna use it!!) and most importantly lets decorate these scenes with either neurotic or simpering females who spend their time ruining a guys life or... ruining a guys life. Because in these movies: women can't win. They are either crazy or painfully submissive; and both will spend their screen time bothering men with neediness, nymphomania or marriage fixation. How many more of these can the studios batter out? Avoid.

An enjoyable, but uneven, comedy that is ultimately carried by the always-reliable Jason Bateman. The concept is a good, if not particularly original one, and there are laughs to be had, although they are becoming a little scarce by the film's final quarter. Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell are memorable playing almost cartoonishly against type, while Kevin Spacey is suitably deranged. Some tighter writing and a slightly more subtle approach (I know it's a comedy, but Bateman's character is the only one that seems to even remotely resemble a realistic human being) might have elevated this to something out of the ordinary.
