Hidden (Caché) (2005)

A disturbing, "get inside your body" type French thriller with two of the best French actors and good French cinema with an unsatisfying ending. Definitely worth a watch.

I actually didn't enjoy watching this movie, and gave it a low rating. But days and perhaps weeks after I couldn't stop thinking about it. Like those jokes that take a while to hit you this movie crawls inside your brain and doesn't let go. A highly recommended experience.

Expected too much from a movie with two great French actors… I failed to grasp the necessity to make the family suffer gradually, yet it did not ‘destroy’ the family, it modestly ‘distressed’ the family. The intention, as though, was simply to make Georges (played by Daniel Auteuil) “aware” of what he has done in his early childhood. A revenge on something that child did not realise it was such a big deal to someone. The last clue in the end did not surprise me, but annoyed me a little that they didn’t elaborate on it. This was not a thriller where in the end one scene shows the real culprit and where people go “Ohhhhhh!!” We needed to get in the mind of two sons more in order to understand and be able to justify what they did, I think… A big fan of European movies but felt like the film left way too much legroom for audience to ponder or perhaps it was like “Da Vinci Code”, the movie – cut so much out and lost many people along the way.

Haneke provides a great dread-laden set-up: mysterious surveillance videotapes are delivered anonymously to a family's doorstep. Then, creepy postcards. The husband seems to be hiding something. Then, everything said or done becomes suspicious and family life frays, even as the obvious culprits are revealed. Haneke may have left everything unresolved, but with no other answers in sight, this isn't plausible; instead the open-endedness functions just to leave that free-floating anxiety in the air.

Brilliant, near perfect thriller. Many will dislike the ending. With one this would have been 5 stars.

Complex story of fear, doubt and guilt. Made by a master of the cinema.

Thoughtful movie - well done - but just a bit too smart for it's own good. I don't like it when directors try to advertise their virtuosity with self conscious cleverness. As is done in this. You need to be a paying member of the 'smugness club' to to appreciate the ending.

Absolutely atrocious - so, so, so, so, so slow. I got the hidden clue at the end, but by then I really did not care! The fact I made it to the end was more an indication of how rainy it was outside rather than how good the film was. Avoid this like the plague if you enjoy a film with even the slightest amount of action.

Not a good movie at all. Far too slow at start then when it finally got going it ended with the most laughable premise. The movie is a go at the French, trying to show that the migrants/ Algerians are victims of French aggression. I am sure there is more than a little truth in the premise but the movie just went over the top. Why the Algerian would do what he did when he waited 50 years and had a wonderful son just defies believe. Totally stupid. Its a shame the director had to take a sledgehammer to make a point. A more talented director/ scriptwriter would have woven a much more credible tale.

Intriguing, with so many details hidden and left to the viewer to work out. While much is revealed along the way, plenty still remains hidden by the end.

I was unaware that this dvd was not in english. Could you please make sure that I don't get any dvd's that are in a foreign language or have subtitles please. Many Thanks, Dawn :)

Hidden well it describes the movie well but something more apt would be missing, which fits, not only the name but the plot, the premise and the story to name but a few, other words to describe this movie would be "what the?" and "Huh?", obviuosly not my cup of tea, since i have taste if you like french, arty, boring movie where you can stare at someones house, for no reason for minutes on end this one is for you, persoanlly be better of watching paint Peel, ok it's not as quick as it dries but at least the scenery changes.

Sorry, so "highbrow" that I completely missed the point Who dun what and why? isn't this the basic question to be answered for a thriller, - or wasn't it a thriller? dunno - would not recomment

Great - really enjoyed this film. You have watch it closely otherwise you will not understand the ending.

Nearly every movie that I have rented in the last 12 months which has been a complete waste of time is based on the recomendation of Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton. This film again cements my view that these two have no concept of what constitutes a decent film. The movie is dull, slow, and obviously made on a low budget. And yes, I have to admit that I was also one of those who didn't get the ending, but maybe that was because I turned it off.

Excellent film. Had me captivated throughout.

A real hotchpotch of a movie! Was expecting something worthwhile with a couple of my favorite French actors/resses but this film went absolutely round and round in circles. An ending which was really bizarre and left the viewer wondering "what the". Started off with promise but faded away to a boring story! Give a miss

Loved it. So nice to have a film where you can use your head and not everything is spelt out for you with clues etc pushed on you with flashing lights and arrows. Great suspense. Great scenes. Acting top-notch. Extra material was interesting too.

Even though this movie was presented at the CannesFestival does not mean it's a good one. Frankly I really struggled to see the point of the movie and what you can learn from it. A total flop in my view

Hidden is a multi-layered drama with a thriller surface and a disturbing view of French-Algerian racial tensions lurking underneath. Georges and Anne Laurent are a wealthy, middle class couple who appear to be menaced by an unrevealed stalker who videos their home and sends them the tapes including cartoon drawings that suggest violence. Flashbacks revel Georges’ childhood past harbours events with which he is uncomfortable, and his guilt intensifies when the cartoon becomes real. At the film’s conclusion can you find the meaningful contact in the crowd of mainly school kids?

Thrilling movie but typically french cinematic ambiguous conclusion may annoy some (not me)

Interesting movie. A little existential, I wonder whether we really care about the main character.

An absolutley brilliant film that captivates from first to last frame. Make sure you watch it all - from the very start to the VERY END. Otherwise you may miss a hidden clue ...

it was not very good at all

I saw this and found myself a little perplexed. Long and drawn out with a lot of the scenes seemingly deliberately slow. A man slowly climbs some stairs, can't they just cut to when he reaches the top? The person that I saw it with loved it because it was 'artistic'.
