Director: Clint Eastwood
Actors: Matt Damon, Cecile De France, George Mclaren, Frankie Mclaren, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr, Richard Kind

Hereafter tells the story of three people who are touched by death in different ways. George (Matt Damon) is a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile De France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus, a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might-or must-exist in the hereafter.

by Simon Miraudo,

I’ve never thought the ability to speak to the dead would be at all appealing; never enjoyed hearing people talk about their supposed run-ins with late relatives, be it in the waking or dream world; never liked watching Crossing Over with John Edwards. My problem with the last example is fairly cut and dry: the act of “cold calling” is exploitative, and unfair to those in mourning and to the legacy of the deceased. I think I understand why many people like the idea of being able to reach out towards those in the afterlife. When someone dies, it’s as if they’re heading to a holiday destination that we too will inevitably visit. And if our family and friends arrived at a mysterious location without dropping us a line and telling us the weather was fine, we’d be rightfully concerned. It’s no...

It’s no exaggeration to say death is one hell of a scary concept. That fear has essentially defined the entire progress of man: from the formation of religions and civilisations, to our eventual creation of - and the subsequent evolution of - art, all in the pursuit of understanding our ephemeral lives (also, sex; sex is responsible for the rest of our actions on this earthly plane). In the last century, our creative exploration of life, death, and whatever-comes-next stretched into cinema, where the spirit world has been portrayed in many ways: a comforting, bureaucratic office space (A Matter of Life and Death), a painting in motion (What Dreams May Come); Enya’s vomit (The Lovely Bones). Hereafter offers us Clint Eastwood’s interpretation of life after death. How does it stack up? Well, say what you will about The Lovely Bones, but at least “Enya’s vomit” is an interpretation.

Eastwood and screenwriter Peter Morgan agree on one thing: there is an afterlife. Aaaaaand that seems to be the extent of their willingness to discuss the topic. Matt Damon stars as George Lonnegan, a clairvoyant who can supposedly communicate with the dead; he merely needs to touch someone and he can channel their dearly departed. Lonnegan’s storyline is but one of the film’s three separate threads; each thread is equally unremarkable. Cecile de France plays Marie Lelay, host of what appears to be a four-minute news program, and survivor of the 2008 Indian Ocean tsunami (which is powerfully depicted in the film’s opening sequence). She crossed over to the other side, and has returned to reality a changed person. She writes a book about it. Cough. The final thread involves 12-year-old English twins Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George McLaren), who endure a tragedy and, as you might expect, eventually touch base with both Marie and George.

Hereafter plays like Crash crossed with Touched by an Angel. It’s both on-the-nose and painfully vague. It assures viewers of an afterlife, yet describes it as merely being a place where “you can be all things and all at once”. Talk about non-committal. You see, what I loved about Alex ProyasKnowing (and go with me on this) is the way it encouraged characters to take a leap of faith, and embrace death knowing there is an afterlife, but never going so far as to promise it to its characters. Hereafter asks for no such leaps of faith. It offers no poignancy or spirit; merely an obtuse interpretation of the never-never, book-ended with shrugs.

Ultimately, my ideological problems with the film are not as serious as my technical problems. An ambiguous film about the afterlife could definitely work if executed in finer fashion. Eastwood’s cut and run technique (he prefers only one or two takes) may work with pros like Matt Damon and Cecile de France, but it’s just unfair to force the young McLaren brothers to work under such conditions. All scenes with Frankie and George are stiff, forced and brutally unnatural. The script is already painfully expository and obvious, it could only be considered passable if performed with nuance, and you ain’t getting nuance from an inexperienced kid offered only a couple of takes to nail his lines. Maybe they were given a few more takes than Eastwood normally allows. It really doesn't seem like it though.

At least Hereafter gives us another gorgeous Clint Eastwood musical score; it is perhaps his only directorial fingerprint that is welcome. He doesn’t direct the way he acts; there is no dry sense of humour, and no gravitas. He’s so concerned with churning out a film every calendar year that he’s become a one-man Ford production line. Hereafter fails to deliver on the promise of its opening scene. It’s a film about the very thing all humans obsess over, yet it is of absolutely no consequence.

2/5

Well if you read through the first dozen or so reviews below this, you'll probably form the opinion that you'll either love or hate this movie. And probably see a few spoilers as well. It seems some people don't know the difference between a review & a summary. The opening 10-15 minutes is visually brilliant. A technically challenging but excellent CGI replication of the event in question, which probably used up most of the movies' budget. Make sure you see the making of it in the special features. After that however, the movie flows into two or three other parallel but seemingly unrelated stories which you switch between throughout the movie. They do move quite slowly; don't watch this if you're sleepy or have a poor attention span (not recommended for Gen Y). Whilst it might seem boring, I sense that there was a deliberate deftness here to the sensitivity of the subject of people dying & the grief that those left behind endure. It does all intersect in the end, but it takes a long time getting there. The supernatural stuff isn't all that heavy; the director & writers aren't out to make any religious or psychic statements. It's more a story about grief & closure, & it makes me wonder just how many people we intersect with every day, are carrying the same burden.

This is a great movie, excellent three part story line which all comes to an interesting conclusion. Thought all the main actors did a sterling job, especially Matt Damon and the delightful French lady (Cecile De France). You can say what you like but Mr Eastwood certainly puts together entertaining movie's. This would be one of the most under rated films I have seen for some time, definitely worth a watch, in fact I'd watch it again with pleasure.

A couple of individuals touched tragedy cross paths with a reluctant psychic who communicates with the dead. After a fairly stunning opening this exploration of death settles into a story of the search for the unknowable. Interesting but lacking soul. 3.5 stars

Usually, I steer clear of anything that smacks of the supernatural/ghosts/spirits, but this movie got me and I loved it. The protagonist has the gift of seeing into people's lives except he regards it as a curse and tries never to use it. There's a marvellously realistic and scary tsunami in Indonesia in which a terrified Frenchwoman nearly loses her life, there are two little boys in London living with their unreliable, junkie mother and trying to escape "the welfare". One of the brothers is killed and the other brother, in grief, withdraws from life. The seer is in London and, fortuitously, is able to help the child and falls in love with the Frenchwoman. There's a lovely scene at a cooking school and a glimpse into the life of a TV frontwoman. the whole thing works and is brilliant. Could watch it again...and again.

I think this movie was great. Clint Eastwood's Directing abilties really touches the heart. There was a particular scene with Marcus the schoolboy and Matt Damon that really brought a few tears to my eye. I recommend this movie to those who love stories about people connecting and finding eachother through different circumstances in life.

Some wonderful performances, however Matt Damon’s character was a little dull and I found myself frustrated at his inability to see other possibilities about his future. Sound quality was poor at times; just because someone is speaking another language doesn't mean we don't want to hear!

This is the most boring movie I've seen in a long time. The tsunami sequence in the beginning was impressive and scary and well done. But the rest of it was just tedious. The basic premise of the movie is sound but they didn't do it right. Every sequence took too long to play out and I found myself saying to the tv: "oh come on already!" I didn't feel anything for the characters and even at the end when I found out what happened to everyone, I couldn't have cared less. A great disappointment and I was sad about that because I really wanted to like this movie.

This movie was promising from the start but then falls into the easy way out with BIG coincidences and an (happy of course) end that I found terribly awkward. When you get to the end you realize that you have just watched a boring US movie or/and the worst flick Clint Eastwood ever directed. A waste of time! How Eastwood was interested enough in life after death, already sounds so wrong as the scientific facts discussed in this movie. It's like the guy who wrote this didn't look mucscientist science has proved especially psychiatric facts about near death experience. Garbage!

if you like the tv series 'the One', or if you believe there is more to life than empirical rational science, then this is the movie for you. Not a happy subject matter but it is directed by Clint Eastwood, who apparently has a special interest in life what happens when we have a near death experience and the acting by Matt Damon and Cecil de France is very good indeed. Well worth watching if you can handle the subject matter.

I wouldn't recommend this movie and thought it was probably the worst movie Matt Damon has been in. The acting is good, but the storyline and plot lack depth. The ending is pathetic, just shrivels into nothing. No sense of being left with anything. Like they just stopped filming and didn't finish it off. Even the psychic connection bits were badly done. Pick something else this is snail paced. 1 star because of the acting.

Loved this movie. Matt Damon is fantastic and this is another wonderful movie directed by Clint Eastwood. Can Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood do any wrong?

Truly and utterly dreadful. Like being forced to read a saccharine new age book. And I really take issue with the take home message which seems to be that we can only cope with death and loss if we know there is something to look forward to "on the other side". The dialogue was so bad at times it was funny. Clint's directorial near death experience.

I loved it....until everything finally came together and I settled in for the REAL story to begin and the CREDITS started rolling! I wanted so much more. Especially from Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon. I was left wondering what the point of the movie was. I really wanted to explore the whole 'Hereafter' part of the movie. Not just dance around the edges.

Why do people type cast actors - it just leads to disappointment when they do something a little different. We loved this movie - plan to watch it for a 3rd time tomorrow. Matt Damon plays with maturity and sensitivity. Everyone in this movie is wonderful, the special effects are amazing, the locations very natural, the story is realistic and believable. I would have liked it longer because I didn't want to leave these characters. Don't expect action in this, it's a gentle, bitter/sweet story that comes together in the end. Not enough stars to rate it properly.

Sorry to say that I was disappointed with this.I'm a huge Matt Damon fan normally. His performance was okay;and the young boy who played Marcus was a standout for me.However;the journalist character was someone I just couldnt like or feel any empathy for;and her portions of the movie ruined it for me.Movie felt overly long as well.

Excellent storyline BUT slow! Not Matt Damon's usual type of movie but he played his part very well, three people from different backgrounds(and countries) that cross paths and influence each others lives in important ways, the young boy who looses his twin Brother is so heart breaking, lost & shy but has great determination in finding a way to contact his twin after his tragic death. Well worth watching and the ending is lovely.

Slow moving but worthwhile. Fantastic opening and lots of interesting things to discuss after watching. Thought the young boys story was the most interesting but lost interest with the french lady.

Hugely disapointed and I am a big Matt Damon fan. It was boring and after watching it which took endurance I was of the strong opinion that the motive for making the movie was to make a strong point or statement about psychics....Statement being that not all psychics are a fraud and that both psychic and seeker should persist until they fulfil their calling and answer. In addition it was clearly making a contrast being the so called genuine and ingenuine......

Depressing and dull. Not sure of the point of the film. We both fell asleep and didn't bother to finish watching it later

Slow to start but I stuck with it and am so glad I did. It all comes together , another Clint Eastwood master piece. So moving , the reference to the light and other experiences with no explaination , this is what I have experienced & had explained to me in the process of losing a loved one . Now i would like to read the book this movie was based on if there is one. 4 stars only because for me I was left wanting .

A truly beautiful movie. Absolutely loved it! Yes it is slow moving but I feel taking the extra time to explore the emotions surrounding the experiences of death was a good move by Clint Eastwood. I found more was said in the silent moments than all the script put together. I was spellbound from start to finish.

Disappointed in this one. Matt Damon normally picks a pretty good script but I feel he failed on this one. such a shame.

Hereafter is a touching movie the spiderwebs around the 3 central characters ultimately bringing them together in an interesting twist of fate. Terrific movie that drags a little in places but a must see!
