Was really good for the first half but then got overly long and got a bit sentimental toward the end. One of those movies that could have been much better than it was with a bit of editing and some better acting from some of the minor characters.
Loved it. It was really clever and got you thinking.
Absolutely wonderful movie. Highly recommend. Delivering a serious topic with good humour and beautiful sets and costumes. A must see for all.
Great movie! Best one i've seen in ages!!!!
Really enjoyed this movie
Great story. Well written script.
Really good, shows how awful humans can be but how there is also some good in people.
I haven't read the book so I'm not sure how well the movie stands up in comparison.
I found the movie quite touching. I certainly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it.
This was a fantastic movie. One of the best that I've seen in ages.
Very well written script and the cast were great. I was surprised.
This is a wonderful movie!!
Good movie, quite moving!! Love how it made me laugh, cry and value bring up my children :-)
Fantastic movie. Good humour, one of the best I've seen in ages.
Incredibly moving film with wonderful actors playing their roles beautifully. With tissues handy I laughed and cried as they finally spoke about their lives and gave themselves freedom from within.
Great movie, very sad at times. Sometimes I wished I could have served all the mothers up with Poo Pie !!!!!!
Very good movie - don't be put off by its more serious message - it is very entertaining as well.
I knew this would be my type of movie and it was. Shows the injustice and the amazing strengths of people, a real tear jerker for me.
great film. interesting. topical. along the lines of erin brokovich type stuff. held your interest and really showed the value of people. very worth watching
Really enjoyed this film. Cried, laughed and enjoyed it completely.
Best movie I've seen in a long time.
Amazing movie, great story. Out to buy the book now.
What an awesome movie! Absolutely loved it...everybody should see it
Powerful and thought provoking - this movie made me sad and angry (how can humans be so inhumane to each other?) but was not depressing. Great performances all round with a first class script - well done !! Could watch it again...
Sad story but needed to be told..enlightening
I really enjoyed this one- a bit Americanised, and southern accents are difficult to understand, but still good. Hard to believe these situations really happened.
Excellent movie, i hate to think that people were treated like that.
Wow this movie made me laugh, cry and want to punch my fist in the air. powerful and very moving.
A well presented and told story. Very enjoyable
really good movie, sad but good
Really beautiful movie. Great story and excellent performances.
Great movie - loved it - tears and laughs
This movie makes you laugh and fun................a great movie!!
What an amazing movie. I have held off seeing this but so glad I eventually did. It is really different to what I was expecting. An amazing cast and screenplay, a really thoughtful, intelligent movie. Loved it.
A movie that drew me in completely. Laughed and cried.
The characters are very believeable and the subject matter still relevant to this day and age.
I hear the book is amazing.
Absolutely brilliant - a must see. A very powerful and thought provoking movie where all of the cast played their parts exceptionally well. One of those movies that makes you want to be a better person. Only downside, at times comprehending that deep south accent that could have been a bit clearer.
Found this amusing in parts, and sad. A really great drama.
I grew up in the fifties and never new how bad it was for the African American people I never looked at them a people like us ,this film showed me how bad it was for them it is a must to see.
Loved this movie. Had read the book and it lived up to that so very enjoyable. Very touching. Well worth it.
I watched this movie with my 15 year old daughter and we both really enjoyed it! It's funny and sad, great acting - a wonderful movie! Recommend it to everyone!
The name does not do the movie justice. Has impact on all human situations, not just the southern states. Some hilarity makes for excellent balance and heightened effectiveness of the message.
This film will make you laugh and make you cry as it traces the arc of human nature from its most despicable to its most inspirational.
I absolutely loved this movie. I think that some families NEED to make their teens watch it.
I have to admit this movie pretty much broke my heart. The fact that this appalling behaviour by the white wasps of 50's America is recent history, really makes you feel sad for the human race. Luckily the story wasn't all racism and tears as the maids get a certain amount of payback. Octavia Spencer is brilliant as ever but it was Viola Davis's movie and she deserved that Oscar. Shame on the American South, shame!
Had read the book before watching film. Highly recommended. So sad, but funny in parts, thought provoking.
Fantastic movie. A glimpse into the America history in the deep south. Well deserved the buzz it created.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - and after I had read the book too! I would recommend it highly.
I loved the book & the movie was not a disappointment. The characters were so well portrayed.
Deep & powerful. Keep the tissues handy.
This was a fantatic movie, it made me cry, laugh, and sad at how we can treat people, great acting, and really good story line. beauty full - i wished it would not end.
Its a good story and definitely worth a watch.
Great movie - Not often you come across a movie where mum, dad, and 3 sons aged 15, 14 & 10 actually laugh out loud, a very enjoyable movie and a great night with the family
This is a FIRST CLASS movie. Once you get over the Michael Jackson look alike you will find this movie a real heart tugger. This movie will have you reaching for the tissues and hopefully your outlook on life (albeit for a brief moment) as we are after all creatures of habit. ENJOY.
I enjoyed this movie all the way through.
A real eye opener. It's a pity people still get treated like this in so many parts of the world. People who spoke up during times like this really did risk their & their families lives. I also liked how Skeeter stuck to her principals & remained loyal to her beliefs. A solid movie. Great appeal.
I was a bit wary about watching this, as I thought it'd be yet another air-headed US movie, but I was totally wrong. I thought it extremely well acted and the storyline very interesting in the way the plight of coloured servants was told through writing a book. Authentic to the period with costumes etc and the way people spoke and reacted.
Loved it, very faithful to the book and a great cast
I really really enjoyed this, much more than expected!
Just a great movie
What a ripper. Thought it would be a chick flick as my wife said get it, but it was really good. Sad thing is that there are parts of the world people still work for nothing and are treated not much better than slaves.
I really enjoyed this movie.
Good review from Simon Miraudo, available here on QuickFix. He gave it 3.5 stars.
For some reason I was expecting more and I think it could have been more. It was ok, nothing brilliant in my opinion - but of course we all view movies differently! Given the subject matter I think it lacked 'oomph'.
Excellent and very engaging!
This was a very good movie, an important message was told in this movie.
Excellent movie. Fully recommend this.
not bad a real eye opener about racial prejudice
an amazing and uplifting film, loads of great actors, loved it.
Enjoyed the movie I then read the book. Movie pretty much follows the book very well.
Agree that this is a great story and well enough told. Bit hard to pick up on some of the dialogue though given the thick southern accents. Also suspect the film is a bit sugar coated re the air of threatened, and real violence that hung over dissenting blacks in the US southern states. Its touched upon but largely missing in this Stepford wife portrayal. However this is predominantly a film about women and maybe the film is an accurate portrayal of just the psycological violence perpetrated by some white women over the black help.
Lovely movie.... had a great movie night with my mum!! Loved the story linem now off to get the book!!
Absolutely FABULOUS, if i could give him more than 5 star i would. I loved it and so everyone else that was with me to watch it. Really moving as racist has always excited. WATCH IT, you won't be disappointed, but bring on the tissues. OUTSTANDING
Great to see the film version of a great book :)
I was expecting more...a bit predictable...liked it...was I wasn't spellbound or anything, it was ok.
really good film - really enjoyed it despite what I expected
Excellent, moving story line. Acting roles very solid and well suited to roles.
one of the best films i have ever seen.
A really well-made story, and it has captured the essence of the book so well; casting brilliant.
Thoroughly enjoyable movie. Even though it probably would be listed under the genre "Chic Flick", I enjoyed it and I am a red blooded male
brillant, as good as the book, we watched it twice
Great Movie ... fantastic
good dramatic storyline with a strong cast - despite its length it didn't drag a bit.
Loved it. Truely great movie, hits the heart strings a few times and really opens your eyes as to just how much hurt went on. Quite funny in parts. Again, I think everyone should watch this movie, especially teenagers...... agree with you Pap! Terrific acting to boot - even my husband enjoyed it and hes all about the action! Well done guys
A social conscious movie that drags a bit.
Loved it. It's hard to believe how cruel white Americans were to African Americans. This movie should be compulsory viewing for every student.
The hype is true! Great movie! Loved it!!
This is a well made thought provoking film with terrific acting from the women. Worth watching!
Wonderful!. All performances are terrific. The stories of all the women are funny and moving. I thorough enjoyed this movie.
Absolutely wonderful movie. It made me laugh and cry and ponder on man's inhumanity to man (or woman). The acting was fantastic and the story lines threaded through this movie were believable and heart breaking. Highly recommend it.
Good movie - gives very graphic involvement in the US colour discrimination issues with great story line and wonderful actors.
Amazing film, very moving, enjoyed all of it. In the last half hour I was waiting for something really, really bad to happen to at least one of the characters, but I'm glad the ending was very satisfying without any added melodrama. I especially liked the beautifully colourful way it was filmed and the costuming - the dress designs for that decade of the last century. I can recommend this film as one of the 'must sees' for this year.
A feel good sista-hood movie...touching and a great story for young ladies and ladies young-at-heart. .
Yes corny, cheesy and predicable with simple goody and baddy characters but nevertheless enjoyable
Only watched 15 minutes and turned it off - the way the females talked was stupid and is hard to relate to such air heads. Not entertaining.
enjoyable film, revenge is so sweet.
A wonderful story about a young woman ahead of her time. Has both funny and very touching moments. Much recommended.
Such a wonderful and moving film. Don't be surprised if you shed a few tears.
Enlightening and stirring.
An easy watch 'chick flix' about how racism went throught the different generations of housewives in the 50-60's, a little slow at times BUT the main problem I had was following the story with the broad Mississippi accents. Would like to read the book now.
Great movie. highly recommended. A must see for everyone.
loved it loved it loved it. Get the tissues out girls. Close enough to the book
very slow and didn't engage me in the way the book did.
Excellent movie. Shows the callous, hurtful, ignorant, blatant racism of WHITE America in the 60's. No doubt some of it still around today. Highly recommended
Excellent movie, showing the difficulties the Africian American people had to face from the women's point of view. Also how society on the whole can make it difficult to those that wish to make a difference. I recommend for all to see this film. Absolutely loved it.
A brilliant film. A very provoking film and makes one realise just how difficult it was for the African Americans and still is today in some parts of the USA. The film could be quite funny as well as quite dramatic.
Excellent movie, an great insight into the racism during those times.
An absolutely fine movie and one that everyone should see. A sklllfully directed movie with some superb performances. Well worth taking time to watch this.
LOVED IT! One of my faves, I would happily see it again. Great cast and fantastic storyline. Very sad in some ways.
An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. Every time you have a whinge about how hard you have it, switch on this movie for a reality check of what it was like to be an African American in 60s Mississippi . Top notch
one of the best movies ive seen. drama but a few laughs on the way. really enjoyed it.certainly not boring.
a wonderful and funny insight into the other side of life
AWESOME MOVIE! This movie had me intrigued and rivetted. The acting by everyone was superb and the storyline eye opening and disturbing.....how could anyone treat another human being like that because of the colour of their skin?
The Help tries so hard to be appealing that making any sort of criticism of it seems a little like kicking a kitten. Hollywood loves a good historical drama - just so long as they can airbrush the hell out it and take out all the really nasty bits first. The Help proves no exception, presenting a bubblegum view of the American civil rights movement and at times, flirting dangerously with condescension. On the upside, it's very well acted, carefully crafted and moves along at an engaging pace. It's social upheaval with lip gloss - but The Help is hard to dislike all the same.
Had some really fantastic bit but not as funny as I would have thought. Definitely more touching and great story rather than funny
Brilliant movie which sent me through every emotion. Would thoroughly recommend.
A movie worth watching more than once
Excellent movie. Worth the credits everyone keeps giving it. Excellent cast. Funny at times which breaks up the shock of what times were like.
This movie is about a very heavy subject, but still manages to be light and entertaining. Funny and engaging for most of the movie and also a bit of an eye opener.
A great movie, good insight about that time in history, I will watch it again, worth the watch
Brilliant movie! I have watched it probably 4 times now.
awesome movie ... a very goog insight.... to watch it would have been like in those days.
Gorgeous movie! Loved it to bits, can be a tear jerker at times though.
Excellent movie and describing a time that is within so many of our memories. Segregation, only the USA could come up with such a farce. "You are black skinned so therefore you cannot sit on my toilet". No wonder the world is in such a wierd state when we all try and emulate the USA. WATCH AND LEARN what not to do.
Excellent movie Very well done.
Really good movie!!! excellent acting ... but then thats why they took all the oscars...
An enjoyable film, I did not get what all the fuss and hype was about, it did not change my world - but this film has been done before. Good Acting and good storyline.
This movie is nothing short of brilliant! A must see and this movie is the best movie that i have watched for a very long time.
Very good story, most enjoyable
Heart felt & touching movie! loved every minute of this movie! Great! A
Cried and Cried and Cried - just loved it - well worth a watch or two like I did
This is The Best Movie I have seen this year. A movie with a lot of heart and soul - I could watch it all over again!
Simply brilliant. well writen, well acted, great movie!! a must see for all. :D cheers, thumbs up!!!
This movie was excellent, such a good story and really pulled the heart strings. Everyone should be equal!!
A touching and heart felt movie that will open your mind and make you think. Great acting, lovely story and one to highly recommend.
Excellent movie and great acting. Really enjoyed it,
An outstanding film. It's a movie that when it finishes you sit and watch the credits, listen to the closing music and think about it what went on. Well worth seeing more than once.
The book was great - I'd highly recommend it for an enjoyable and involving read. Sure, it's a bit cliched and there are flaws in the plot, but I liked it a lot. Impossible for a film to condense the plot and characters into 100 minutes, so I suppose I have no right to feel disappointed but I was. If the film appeals, read the book instead - you won't regret it!
Very enlightening, and it just goes to show, revenge can be so 'sweet' sometimes. Enjoyable movie
an excellent movie.Loved it.
This is such a good movie with a very positve message.
Loved it, funny with real life issues...great acting, setting, story line....My fav so far!
AWESOME< AWESOME Read the book and the film did it justice..LOVED IT...
Absolutely brilliant!!! I was a bit dubious at first, as so often you hear good things about a movie & you go in expecting a lot & be totally disappointed, but not this time. It got you in right from the beginning to the very end. Whilst I agree with some of the other reviewers that Emma Stone's character didn't really fit the time, you tended to overlook that & just be caught up in the unfolding story. For me, however, the best character by far was Celia Foote (Jessica Chastain) who took on her maid with no false airs or graces, and just treated her as an equal - brilliant!! After watching this I am now dying to read the book. OUTSTANDING!!
I found the movie quite hard to follow, if I hadn't read the book before I watched the movie, I would have been lost. Characters were not explained. It is a shame because the book was gripping but it has not translated well to the screen.
Awesome movie. Husband said he wouldn't watch it but walked by, sat down and really enjoyed it lol.
A very touching and intelligent movie. Always powerful to hear the voice of the downtrodden and mistreated. But, the balanced perspective was appreciated, as all races were fairly represented, both the good and the bad within all of us. It's the detail that provokes thought in an understated and clever way.
I had heard great reviews about this movie and must say I have to agree, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great story about racism in the 60's era, great acting and it opens our eyes to the appalling way the 'colored' people were treated back then by white people, totally disgusting. I'm going to buy the book now - great movie.
Rather disappointing and much too long. The story suffers from too much detail, irrelevancies and episodes that make little sense. The characters are caricatures and largely unconvincing. Strangely out of place is the central character who looks like she was transported from a 2010s world back into the 1960s. While that might make sense in some movies, it doesn't here. Everyone else looks totally different, befitting the era. Yes, the new graduate was supposed to look different, but 50 years ahead of her time?
great movie well worth watching
good movie,worth watching
An interesting premise focused on human rights and equality in 1960s Tennessee. Still predictable in places. Nice movie with a good purpose though.
Loved it!! Excellent story. Great acting- everyone needs to see this!
A very well done movie - I thought Emma Stone a touch too "modern" for the 1960s but otherwise a beautifully presented story about black suppression set in the 1960s in the southern Mississippi region. Thought provoking, very moving story. First rate acting from all the cast.
I strongly encourage you to watch this movie. I absolutely loved it - absolutely wonderful story telling with magnificent acting. I can totally see why this movie has been recommended for so many awards. I will be buying this, and will now also be reading the book! Watch out Oscars - here comes The Help
Excellent Drama about the racism that existed in the southern states of America during the 1960's, well worth watching.
Very good story, told in an elegant way with beautful supportting actors (and I'm not referring to their appearances). The characters all have their own styles and beliefs and don't always fall into the sterotypes. Really enjoyed it.
Excellent movie. Wish I had read the book before seeing it. Deals with a lot of racism. Quite sad in parts.
