Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, The Help stars Emma Stone (Easy A) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (Doubt) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minnie—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Finally! A film about the civil rights movement in which the hero is a privileged young white thing instead of the tireless, self-sacrificing politicians or the downtrodden and racially vilified lower class blacks. The Help teeters perilously close to falling into the ‘white-person-helps-minority-group-fight-back-against-evil-white-people’ trap. A recent offender is Avatar, in which Jake Sully wears a Na’vi suit for a couple of weeks and then lectures them about their ancient civilization (admittedly, the Na’vi are fictional, but you get the idea). OK, OK, I’m being (mostly) facetious. Tate Taylor’s adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help is actually rather even-handed in its depiction of the social mores in the United States during the tumultuous 1960s. That being said, when 30 seconds of screen time is devoted to one of the black housemaid’s life of poverty and relationship with her abusive husband, as opposed to the numerous scenes set aside for our white protagonist to be courted – and eventually dumped – by a random dude, you have to wonder whether writer/director Taylor really respects the gravity of the situation he's depicting.

Emma Stone stars as Skeeter Phelan, a go-getting tomboy and wannabe journalist who returns to her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi after graduating from university, all educated and such. She discovers her mother (Allison Janney) has fired her beloved maid and nanny Constantine (Cicely Tyson) for mysterious reasons, and witnesses her former chums' disrespect the rest of the town’s ‘help’. They include Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), who mourns the death of her son while waiting on the Leefolt family and their precious baby girl; and Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer), who must contend with the black-hearted Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her senile mother (Sissy Spacek). When Hilly tries to introduce a bill that will see separate bathrooms installed in homes for the black help to use, Skeeter plots to write a book from the perspective of these voiceless women. She secretly interviews Aibileen and Minny, who share with her their life experiences, cautious at every moment that their illegal practices could be unearthed and ruin their (already unenviable) lives.

The film is very easy to like – specifically thanks to Davis and Spencer, as well as the other leading and supporting ladies – but that might be part of the problem. The white characters are divided so clearly into categories of good and evil; everyone is either an unrestrained and hate-filled bigot, or a bleeding heart who really doesn’t want to be racist, but everyone else is doing it so they might as well too. To see a character like Hilly Holbrook be so blatant in her disdain for another race is to further separate us from the events of the 1960s. We sit and scoff at these small-minded Mississippians. “How could anyone be so racist and cruel?” Never mind that issues of immigration – legal and illegal – rage on today in Australia just as much as in America. The same goes for the class divisions of racial groups within our society. The Help takes place less than 50 years ago; this is barely history. There was a real opportunity here to hold up a mirror to the audience and our current-day prejudices, with a variety of complex characters who blurred the lines of racist and non-racist. With inhuman villains like Hilly, it becomes so much easier to disengage. We shake our heads, tut, and sympathise with the diversity-loving Skeeter. How much better a film would this have been if we were forced – yes, even unwillingly – to see a bit of ourselves in Hilly?

The Help deals with a loaded subject, and perhaps it’s unfair to lump the expectation of defining an entire era on the one film. Maybe we have to be content with the fact it’s focusing on a single facet of this plight. Now, do we chastise the film for whitewashing the civil rights movement, or do we applaud it for showing us both sides of this racial struggle? The film is neither offensive nor brilliant enough to earn either response. It is, however, an exceptionally performed and consistently (even over the course of its two-and-a-half-hour runtime) entertaining drama. The film’s tagline is, ‘Change begins with a whisper’. Consider The Help ‘a whisper’. I look forward to one day seeing the ‘change’.

Was really good for the first half but then got overly long and got a bit sentimental toward the end. One of those movies that could have been much better than it was with a bit of editing and some better acting from some of the minor characters.

I have to admit this movie pretty much broke my heart. The fact that this appalling behaviour by the white wasps of 50's America is recent history, really makes you feel sad for the human race. Luckily the story wasn't all racism and tears as the maids get a certain amount of payback. Octavia Spencer is brilliant as ever but it was Viola Davis's movie and she deserved that Oscar. Shame on the American South, shame!

I enjoyed this movie all the way through. A real eye opener. It's a pity people still get treated like this in so many parts of the world. People who spoke up during times like this really did risk their & their families lives. I also liked how Skeeter stuck to her principals & remained loyal to her beliefs. A solid movie. Great appeal.

I was a bit wary about watching this, as I thought it'd be yet another air-headed US movie, but I was totally wrong. I thought it extremely well acted and the storyline very interesting in the way the plight of coloured servants was told through writing a book. Authentic to the period with costumes etc and the way people spoke and reacted.

Agree that this is a great story and well enough told. Bit hard to pick up on some of the dialogue though given the thick southern accents. Also suspect the film is a bit sugar coated re the air of threatened, and real violence that hung over dissenting blacks in the US southern states. Its touched upon but largely missing in this Stepford wife portrayal. However this is predominantly a film about women and maybe the film is an accurate portrayal of just the psycological violence perpetrated by some white women over the black help.

Amazing film, very moving, enjoyed all of it. In the last half hour I was waiting for something really, really bad to happen to at least one of the characters, but I'm glad the ending was very satisfying without any added melodrama. I especially liked the beautifully colourful way it was filmed and the costuming - the dress designs for that decade of the last century. I can recommend this film as one of the 'must sees' for this year.

An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. Every time you have a whinge about how hard you have it, switch on this movie for a reality check of what it was like to be an African American in 60s Mississippi . Top notch

The Help tries so hard to be appealing that making any sort of criticism of it seems a little like kicking a kitten. Hollywood loves a good historical drama - just so long as they can airbrush the hell out it and take out all the really nasty bits first. The Help proves no exception, presenting a bubblegum view of the American civil rights movement and at times, flirting dangerously with condescension. On the upside, it's very well acted, carefully crafted and moves along at an engaging pace. It's social upheaval with lip gloss - but The Help is hard to dislike all the same.

Excellent movie. Worth the credits everyone keeps giving it. Excellent cast. Funny at times which breaks up the shock of what times were like.

This movie is about a very heavy subject, but still manages to be light and entertaining. Funny and engaging for most of the movie and also a bit of an eye opener.

Excellent movie and describing a time that is within so many of our memories. Segregation, only the USA could come up with such a farce. "You are black skinned so therefore you cannot sit on my toilet". No wonder the world is in such a wierd state when we all try and emulate the USA. WATCH AND LEARN what not to do.

An outstanding film. It's a movie that when it finishes you sit and watch the credits, listen to the closing music and think about it what went on. Well worth seeing more than once.

The book was great - I'd highly recommend it for an enjoyable and involving read. Sure, it's a bit cliched and there are flaws in the plot, but I liked it a lot. Impossible for a film to condense the plot and characters into 100 minutes, so I suppose I have no right to feel disappointed but I was. If the film appeals, read the book instead - you won't regret it!

Absolutely brilliant!!! I was a bit dubious at first, as so often you hear good things about a movie & you go in expecting a lot & be totally disappointed, but not this time. It got you in right from the beginning to the very end. Whilst I agree with some of the other reviewers that Emma Stone's character didn't really fit the time, you tended to overlook that & just be caught up in the unfolding story. For me, however, the best character by far was Celia Foote (Jessica Chastain) who took on her maid with no false airs or graces, and just treated her as an equal - brilliant!! After watching this I am now dying to read the book. OUTSTANDING!!

I found the movie quite hard to follow, if I hadn't read the book before I watched the movie, I would have been lost. Characters were not explained. It is a shame because the book was gripping but it has not translated well to the screen.

A very touching and intelligent movie. Always powerful to hear the voice of the downtrodden and mistreated. But, the balanced perspective was appreciated, as all races were fairly represented, both the good and the bad within all of us. It's the detail that provokes thought in an understated and clever way.

I had heard great reviews about this movie and must say I have to agree, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great story about racism in the 60's era, great acting and it opens our eyes to the appalling way the 'colored' people were treated back then by white people, totally disgusting. I'm going to buy the book now - great movie.

Rather disappointing and much too long. The story suffers from too much detail, irrelevancies and episodes that make little sense. The characters are caricatures and largely unconvincing. Strangely out of place is the central character who looks like she was transported from a 2010s world back into the 1960s. While that might make sense in some movies, it doesn't here. Everyone else looks totally different, befitting the era. Yes, the new graduate was supposed to look different, but 50 years ahead of her time?

A very well done movie - I thought Emma Stone a touch too "modern" for the 1960s but otherwise a beautifully presented story about black suppression set in the 1960s in the southern Mississippi region. Thought provoking, very moving story. First rate acting from all the cast.

Very good story, told in an elegant way with beautful supportting actors (and I'm not referring to their appearances). The characters all have their own styles and beliefs and don't always fall into the sterotypes. Really enjoyed it.
