Much like the book, this movie is confusing, unstructured, intensely erotic and ultimately depressing.
What it doesn't do well is convey Ari's already vague motivations and reasonings.
Its all been said below, Highly recommended watch.
I'm with Lance...
"Good movie... some excellent moments... quite an accurate comment on the modern tensions in Australian Greek communities"
An acceptable adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas' "Loaded", but may be disappointing to fans of the book. Alex Dimitriades is absolutely brilliant as stubborn, selfish Ari, as is Paul Capsis as complex Johnny/Toula. The film does not however manage to successfully examine the deeper themes of Tsiolkas' novel, or Ari as an unreliable narrator and protagonist. It also lulls in points, as several scenes have little or no dialogue, and focus on the environment of urban Melbourne (although this is possibly due to government funding requirements, it does detract from the film.) All in all, a worthwhile watch, but (as always) the book is much better, and most of the value comes from the exceptional cast.
Always a good watch, very Greek!
Yep good movie... some excellent moments... quite an accurate comment on the modern tensions in Australian Greek communities
"Is that all there is?" sang Peggy Lee. I get the feeling that Ari is feeling the same way. He can't get no satisfaction from nuthin. He tries and tries but comes up short and his frustration is palpable. He doesn't want to end up another clone like his culture/ family demand of him. The world is not enough - well at least suburban Melbourne.
I really enjoyed this movie. Alex Dimitriades played an excellent role. Quite raunchy in parts
I mistook this for the German movie, Gegen die Wand (2004), which has the same English title. Even so, decided to take a look. That was a mistake. An explicit encounter in a men's toilet in the first 10 minutes was not something I wanted to see.
I guess the idea of the movie was to portray a disjointed multicultural society. But it is poorly told.
In some sections of the movie, I was left wondering why I should watch this movie at all.
I didn't find Head On to be as revolutionary as I had thought it might be. It is certainly a dark tale, almost depressing. Overall, I found it disappointing compared to the expectation and hype.
Deals with controversial topics, namely hypocrisy, human expectations, multiculturalism among others. Not for everyone but appreciated by those who understand its underlying issues.
worthwhile but only just film; too reliant on the novel.Overrated b/c Australian.Superb performance by Demetriades
I thought it was ridiculous.
