Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One might be the most unsettling, bone-chilling, flat-out-terrifying children’s film ever made. As readers of the book already know, Part One is practically a carefree romp compared to the upsetting events that occur in Part Two. The final book in J.K. Rowling’s seven-part saga of witchcraft and wizardry has been cleft in twain for its cinematic release; a move that is both cruel and absolutely necessary. Some will argue that the resulting product is merely half a film, and they’d be right. It’s also one-eighth of the full story, so why start complaining now? The division is not as essential as it was with Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill (in which part one and part two practically fell within different genres). But there is just so much content in ...

But there is just so much content in Rowling’s Deathly Hallows book – so many set-pieces, so many emotional beats, so many characters, so many character-arcs – it would be unfair to expect director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves to cram them into one bladder-considerate sitting (and unfair on the audience expected to endure the resulting four-and-a-half-hour emotional rollercoaster). So instead of focusing on the inherent limitations of the film’s structure (as well as the numerous supporting characters who are left on the sidelines) allow me to celebrate that which is achieved in HPATDH: P1. And it’s an awful lot.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson all return as Harry, Ron and Hermione for the most strenuous and draining film of the series so far. Over the last ten years, we’ve watched them evolve from cutesy child stars to talented actors (although the spellbinding Watson has been breaking away from the pack for a while now). They’ve grown so adept at conveying stress, guilt and deepest fear, it now seems wildly out of character for them to crack jokes (Grint’s Ron is surely the most heavily-burdened comic relief in cinema). The trio have abandoned their final year at Hogwarts in favour of attempting to overthrow the newly empowered Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his snivelling right-hand-men Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) and Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter). Voldemort’s first orders of business since being resurrected from his kinda-death include taking over the Ministry of Magic, terrorising the mudbloods (wizards and witches with non-magical parents) and generally restoring panic and dread to the wizarding community. Needless to say, with all this talk of "pure blood", plenty of propaganda posters and numerous trials and interrogations, the Nazi/KKK/McCarthy allusions come thick and fast.

So, how does one kill he who can’t be killed? Handily, through a series of video game-esque tasks. Voldemort’s soul has been transplanted into seven magical objects called horcruxes, and it is up to Harry and friends to locate and destroy each of them. Once this has been completed, Voldemort will be ripe for the taking. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This instalment is about setting the tone (oppresive!), establishing the stakes (high!) and ultimately defining the film’s aspirations (grandiose!). In all seriousness, I can’t recall any recent blockbuster epic with such well-defined consequences. The danger is no longer contained within the walls of Hogwarts; it stretches out into the streets of London.

I think back to the sweet-natured, but ultimately modest, early instalments of the Harry Potter series, and it now feels as if I’m focusing on the quaintest elements of a giant gothic portrait. Part One of the Deathly Hallows offers us the opportunity to step back and look at the saga as a whole, before we finally farewell it for good. Although the first couple of films appealed to people of all ages, they were children’s’ movies. No one would dare say that about The Deathly Hallows (despite the fact I did just that in the opening paragraph). Yates shoots it like a horror film, and the shrieking, ear-piercing sound design is intent on keeping viewers in a constant state of anxiety. Characters die, nay, are killed (although – and this is one of the film’s failings – rarely on screen). And in one of the film’s finest moments, a haunting little animated parable explains the film’s title – complete with depictions of the grim reaper, suicide, slaughter and reanimated corpses.

Part One is not without its problems. First of all, the delightful Evanna Lynch is brutally underutilised as the loopy Luna Lovegood. John Williams’ spine-chilling Harry Potter theme is also unfortunately absent (although Alexandre Desplat does a solid job at the conductor's podium). Finally – and I said I wouldn’t focus on this –the film is missing a totally satisfying conclusion. Once Part Two arrives and we have the completed saga within our grasp, I will likely no longer care about Part One’s abrupt ending. Until then, consider this the first half of my review.

4/5

Very hard to see what is happening as most of film seems to be shot in the dark! If you have read the books you will know, otherwise don't watch during the day, unless the room is relatively dark! Otherwise very enjoyable and exciting!

Ah Harry & friends are growing up now. Guess you do really need to see the previous episodes to fully appreciate the "Luke I am your father ", stuff. " Ooops spoiler alert."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still Harry delivers on more of the world of wizards and evilnesses.

It feels too much like the prelude that it is and I really wish they just combined the last 2 films into one, but regardless this is a very different Potter film that stands out. They were executing the near ending very well.

Very dark, very moody and almost impossible to understand what the main characters are saying. Had to rewind to pick up plot points. Overlong with lots of boring padding. extremely disappointing. Will only watch Part 2 to find out how the damn thing ends.

Too much detail and not much interest - this part was devoted to setting the scene for Part 2 which was much more engaging. I think the movie makers did a number on us so they could make twice as much money.

First 10minutes hinted at a darker story only to be followed by 2 hours of nothing. Only reason i sat through this whole movie was that i hoped something would happen. Fingers crossed that part 2 has all the action and story in it.

Exciting movie! Not sure why Ron Weezley again had a bad attitude towards his best mate, Harry Potter. (I mean apart from the effects of the amulet) That's the second movie where this happened. Good to see characters developing further and new goals set for the three friends; Harry, Herminy (spelling?) and Ron. Cliff hanger ending to make us hunger for the second part of the final chapter in the Harry Potter story.

I really love the Harry Potter series, the books are fantastic. This movie was long but I'm glad it has been made into two parts as it will do the book justice. Lots happening in this part of the movie, slowly bringing it all together and unfortunately to an end. Some scary parts in the movie, would not recommend for little ones to watch.

The series gets darker and darker - this (episode) though needs editing with a similarly edited pt 2 (seen at the flicks) tacked on the end - making it just one film - but hey, let's bleed the public for two admissions (plus popcorn)

I have enjoyed all the Harry Potter movies and it is interesting to see them grow up (not something often seen in movies). However this one certainly lacked action and pace and was more just running and hiding than any real action. As such, it is one of my least favouriate Harry Potter movies. Thankfully Part Two made up for this.

Slow burning but satisfying first instalment of the final film of the Harry Potter series. Director David Yates has brilliantly captured the dark and depressing atmosphere the wizarding world is living in under the terror of Lord Voldmort (Ralph Fiennes). Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) continue their search for the final horcruxes in the hope of destroying them so they can ultimately defeat their enemy, who meanwhile is searching for something that will make him even more powerful. As usual, the film is peppered with funny moments care of Ron, the series' much needed comic relief. Any moment that his twin brothers Fred and George (James and Oliver Phelps) grace the screen is equally as entertaining and all the more welcome for those that have read the books and know what the future holds for them. There are some truly emotionally charged moments throughout this film, fans of the novel will be aware of the events that transpire at Malfoy Manor and they don't disappoint (but make sure you have some tissues!) Fans who have been waiting for some time to see some serious wand duelling scenes will be pleased, the fighting scenes finally feel dangerous, brutal and realistic (by magical standards anyway... ) By far the best film so far and a perfect lead in to what is sure to be an epic final installment. Watch out for the snatcher Scabior; played by Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels alum Nick Moran, he manages to steal every scene he is in, and despite being a evil, nasty piece of work has still managed to garner a large following of female fans(myself included...) Must be all that eyeliner. The story of the Three Brothers is also a brilliant scene to watch for - a creepy but glorious shadow puppet animation that is a wonderful, unexpected little treat. Great film - a few faults, a couple of VERY awkward scenes (both involving Harry and Hermione funnily enough) and die hard fans like myself will surely disapprove of some minor plot deviations, but overall it is mostly faithful to the story and fans will certainly not be disappointed. Bring on Part 2.

Yes, it was very long with nothing much happening. Ron having a dummy spit was about the highlight of the film for me. It was all very dark too, as in not enough light, so it was hard to see what was happening half the time. Hope the last one is better than this one.

Excellent viewing, as I expected, and am looking forward to part two. As with the Lord of the rings triology, when the last storyline goes to air, you just keep wanting more but know that this will be the final instalment. Fantastic effects, and directing, the cast have played memorable roles with an enthusiasm still in effect from the very first edition of what will be listed and remembered as a classic.

Part One has definitely set up the franchise for a brilliant final chapter. Deathly Hallows part one however is slow. if they'd cut out some of the long dull pauses they could have added way more storyline. Hermione and Harry dancing was just squirm inducing. The Half Blood Prince was better but this one has it's moments too.

Having grown up reading the books, I loved this film. For those who felt it dragged - try reading the last novel. Unlike the other stories this one jumps straight into the plot and I thought the movie team did well to keep the movie from feeling like it was skipping parts, because the book felt like it skipped a lot. The characters have grown so much personality since "the philosopher's stone". The seen in Ron's mind between Harry and Hermionie was a bit too far though. I loved the ending but now I can't wait to see how they portray the book's ending.

For the fans only. No attempt made to engage new viewers to the franchise. And not a lot happens to progress the plot. Technically, it's great, but the story dragged for me and it's just way too dark. I preferred the earlier ones, with their sense of fun and adventure, rather than the whole darkness of the more recent sequels.
