A more in-your-face "American Beauty." Not bad on the whole but I'm really skeptical about the mental health of the writer(s). A good husband and father was found out that he's actually a child molester. He admitted the truth to his 10-ish-year-old son saying he "fxxx them (little boys)" and that "was great." Then came the most unbelievable line -- the son still worships his dad and asks: "will you fxxx me?" -- As a 100% supporter of artists' freedom to create, I still consider this part of the plot unaccepable.
Forgotten that I had seen this before. Is ok. Not GREAT as some have said but not as bad as others have said.
Great acting, intense themes. The opening scene was great and really set the tone for the rest of the movie. Powerful and disturbing stuff with a dash of dark comedy.
Excelletn - kept me enthralled to the end - reminded me of American Beauty - send up on modern society not just American
Every cast member delivers a top-notch performance in this controversial film. At over 2 hours, the film is very dialogue heavy, but never becomes boring.
One of the final scenes has a young cast member giving one of the greatest child performances i've seen.
Beware: This is pretty tough viewing, with themes of child abuse and pedophilia brought to the fore and dealt with in quite an original fashion. Definitely a thinker's film.
Some of this is hard to endure if your cringe-o-meter isn't set properly. But it's a bit of a one-off and is worth a look. It switches between the blackest of black humour and downright tragedy with a smattering (splattering?) of everything in between. Not an easy watch but worth it in the end.
One of the very best of all times, and I'm a movie lover and do not say that about many films, almost none. If you are too conservative, just remember your golden, little wisdom, somwehere deep down inside of you that a) sometimes films and art simply portray and do not make particularly judgement, b) not a bad thing to try, ie. not making those knee-jerk judgements we (humanely) make, c) can't you watch or accept anything that is outside your bounds of personal experience/ understanding? Bravo to Solondz for the extremely sharp, even wittier and yet, compassionate eye.
It's bleak, it's disgusting, it's misanthropic - I love it!
This movie is one to leave you sick in the stomach. I'm a fairly non taboo kind of person where not much phases me but this movie was truely disturbing in the worst way. Watching a man play out his urge to molest boys and succeeding in doing so had me not finish watching this movie. Although this was one of 3 main characters the storyline lacked direction and you are left waiting and hoping that the movie will pick up and develop only to find it gets worse and drags out further. Don't waste your time with this one.
You'll need a good appreciation for dark humor to watch this one, bit disturbing.
This is a movie that deals with almost a taboo subject. That is, the reality of the pursuit of happiness by ordinary people.
Frustrated and despondant people with lonely existances struggle to find love and meaning in their disappointing and unsuccessful interactions.
Sounds miserable? well maybe, but it is good drama .
This film is quite powerful and heavy material. Don't be fooled, this film is not really at all a comedy! It's more of a Hard-hitting heavey drama, and will make you laugh ONLY in disbelief at the shocking things that play-out in this film. And yes, most people will be offended by this film, as at it's peak it has a rather depressing affect on the viewer, but if you like powerful and disturbing material, then this is perfect for you!
A little bit disturbing, and too slow!
