Brimming with the energy, passion and music that rocked a nation, Hair is an entertaining and powerful tribute to the turbulent spirit of the 60s. Brilliantly recreated by director Milos Forman and screenwriter Michael Weller, this vibrant screen version of the Broadway phenomenon, ranks among the best film musicals.

Fresh from the farm, Claude Bukowski (John Savage) arrives in New York City for a date with the Army Induction Board, only to walk into a hippie ‘happening’ in Central Park and fall in love with the beautiful Sheila (Beverly D’Angelo). Befriended by the hippies’ pacifist leader Berger (Treat Williams), and urged to crash a formal party in order to declare his love for Sheila, Claude begins an adventure that lands him in jail, Central Park Lake, and finally in the army. But Berger’s final effort to save Claude from Vietnam sets in motion a bizarre twist of fate… with shocking consequences.

According to Wikipedia, the plot of the movie is slightly different to that of the stage show. A young man from a farm in Oklahama travels to Manhattan for a few days sightseeing prior to being drafted into the Army. He is befriended in Central Park by a happy-go-lucky bunch of panhandling, drug abusing, homeless bums, who .... ah, who cares. It has a mildly funny/ sadly ironic ending, if you can last that long, and there is no repeat no nude scene.

The musical numbers are amazing (a few songs had annoying and crude lyrics which dated it quite a bit - I guess it was daring back in the late 60s - early 70s) . I was quite familiar with a number of songs (probably through them being adapted for ads in the 1980s or singing them at school) . This movie is beautifully filmed and staged. However, I felt irritated with most of the hippie characters and at times felt quite bored with them and their behaviour. This made me and my partner switch off from the film at times - but it's worth hanging on for the moving ending. Just a note: it also seemed to have been an influence on "Across The Universe" - the Beatles inspired musical film from a few years ago. There were quite a lot of similarities.

This movie is plotless and pointless. I think you'd have to be a hippie to appreciate it. All I saw were a bunch of whiny slackers who do nothing and contribute nothing - completely unlikable characters. The music is still awesome; the message is not. The ending was just dumb and unrealistic. Treat Williams gives a great performance, but that doesn't make his character any more like-able. Doesn't include any bonus features.

I found this screen version of the hit sixties musical annoying and boring. Though the musical has three good songs the rest are largely forgetable. The whole thing comes across dated and silly.

Good fun. Treat Williams is excellent as burger. The "I've Got Life" dance along the table top is a highlight.

A genuine evocative trip back in time (tho' I prefer my soundtrack from the Australian stageshow). Ending is surprisingly chilling.
