Gregory Peck stars as Jimmy Ringo, one of the fastest draws in the West but desperately sick of killing and lonely traveling. This gripping tale surrounds Ringo’s efforts to build a new life, creating a powerful drama instead of the standard shoot-‘em-up--the only gunfights in THE GUNFIGHTER are those that open and close the film. Throughout encounters with old friends, new enemies, his estranged wife, and his first meeting with his only child, Peck offers an intricate portrait of a man harboring deep regrets about his own past.

I wasn't convinced as Gregory Peck as Jimmy Ringo. He isn't really a tough guy. It was fairly predictable what was going to happened, but I still though it was okay.

Gregory Peck is suitably world-weary as the gunfighter who has realized that notoriety means never getting any rest. Until the final rest, of course, which is always just around the corner or looking down from an upstairs window.

Good performance from Gregory Peck but the story has aged terribly. It all seems rather bland.

Proof that prior to the spaggheti westerns Hollywood could produce a realistic & unromantic view of the west. Perhaps Gregory Peck's finest role.
