Very good script, and low key acting. The humour is excellent. Yes, the Irish accent was heavy, but we have learnt to switch on subtitles with a lot of films, American and Irish. It is interesting to see the divergent views on this film, some disliked and many liked it. I think the deadpan delivery of the lines was a clever aspect, music was terrific.
Crass. Not worth watching
Really funny and enjoyable movie. Loved Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson.
‘The Guard’ is a black comedy that is littered with flawed characters. Some are appealing but others are a little too way-out to be believable. That is also a problem with the script; it isn’t credible. It is an exaggeration of ‘the troubles’ associated with Ireland. That is not to say that the incidents depicted in the film can’t or don’t happen, I am sure they do but in isolation. To make fun of the violence in a comedic way is perfectly acceptable but it’s a difficult fine line to tread and it doesn’t work here. The performers, though, are very good and make the best of a difficult task.
Enjoyable movie......Some very funny one liners
Something about this movie made it sensational. Ireland is compicated (my youngest daughter emigrated there) and just cant be summed up easily and this movie reflects that beautifully.
Exceptional. Very amusing. It takes a bit of getting used to the accents at the beginning but it's worth it for the crazy Irish goings on and the characters. Oh yeah, lots of F bombs if you worry about that sort of stuff.
An Irish Pulp Fiction. Just loved it
funny, enjoyable, though at times, the thick Irish brogue becomes indecipherable, puncturated by the magic F word. Gleason at his roguish best.
40 mins in and I gave up. Too slow and characters un-likeable. Bored me no end.
A good film in a sense with a lead character that's difficult to like.
Excellent movie. Very enjoyable. Slow start but persevere as this is building the characters up before the story really gets going. Good script. All very good characters and actors. Quirky. Funny. Worth watching.
Very quirky movie. A bit slow in parts but a well put together movie overall with plenty of laughs. Worth a look.
A must see - good fun and fearless acting by the main character -
I love an Irish accent but I found them so strong that I couldn't understand it! It was also very slow and I could watch past 1/2 hour.
Very cynical Irish cop, a bit slow but ending was great
Awesome. Not to be missed
Very good movie. Quite dark and quirky and the villains have some good lines. Watch it with subtitles on to appreciate the heavy accents
I really enjoyed this film. It was quirky. Not actually a comedy, more an intrigue/police drama with humourous lines and droll characters. The audio was a bit low and this, coupled with the Irish accents, meant it took about 10 minutes for our ears to acclimatise to it. The themes are subversive and the narrative tension is maintained throughout.
Unfortunately the Irish accents make it hard to understand all the dialogue. That the American character is easiest to understand says a lot about what Australian ears have become attuned to. Nevertheless, the story itself is easy enough to follow and is rather mediocre. The movie and its characters don't take themselves too seriously, and it's all a bit light-weight.
Yeah it's alright. Brendan Gleeson definitely grows on you in this one. He plays the role of the abrasive and cynical ploiceman so well. Mostly an enjoyable oddball comedy that doesn't always go for the easy laugh.
Best Irish flick to pop out in ages - do yourself a favour and have a gander.
Its a very bad movie the ascent is very broad hard to understand and very slow I am sure I fell asleep through the movie
Another riotous Irish comedy if you don't mind the swearing.
A worldly wise Irish guard and a by the book FBI agent make interesting combination. A little grim but always with that Irish humour.
Not as good as I expected but still worth a look.
Highly entertaining. Who would have thought, philosophising drug traffickers!
"By the book" FBI agent meets street savy local policeman, with a twist - it's filmed in Ireland! Cleverly done and entertaining, but you have to listen carefully to understand the thick irish accents.
I thought this was great fun and very funny. It reminded me of Father Ted, not just because of the Irish. But the humour. You'll either laught or be offended. I laughed, alot. And I liked the ending.....
The Guard was a surprisingly good movie. The story line is original with plenty of quirks and a hilarious script. Unlike many movies, the Guard keeps your interest high throughout. It delivers with an excellent finale that is hard to predict. I would strongly recommend this movie
Funny, smartly written with impeccable performances all round and beautiful west coast of Ireland scenery. It reminded me a little of the equally delightful film 'In Bruges' also starring Brendan Gleeson. Anyone who enjoyed that is sure to love' The Guard'.
Very funny and very dry. Unusual for a British film be so entertaining.
Very funny. Dry, British humour. Great acting!!
Didnt even make it to the end - to fast talking so you have to watch it with subtitles, really terrible storyline, the star chartacter is a relatable one.... it's hard to stay with it as it is so low action. There were a few cleaver comments but thats about it. I wouldnt watse you time!
Unbelievably slow and boring at the start. The wife cracked it and went to sleep, but if you persist past the slow start it develops into a good movie.
Sooo slow couldn't be bothered!
A delightful black comedy from Ireland, starring Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson. A small village on the coast of Ireland is about to be the dropoff point for a big drug smuggling operation and Cheadle is the FBI agent assigned to find out intelligence on the dropoff. Seems everyone in the village has been paid off to look the other way - except Gleeson 'The Guard' who refuses to take a bribe and who everyone underestimates. Great Irish humour. Highly recommend it.
At first It didn't look like I was going to like the movie but I am glad I kept on watching it, loved it!
Quirky and really funny. Well worth watching.
Hmmm enjoyed it but would have enjoyed it more, I THINK,if I had been able to understand the Irish brogue more. Funnny in parts, hard to understand in others. The wit fantastic.
Couldn't be bothered viewing it right through. I'm surprised Don Cheadle took on his role in what to me is a sub-grade movie. Coarse and vulgar.
Entertaining movie.Brendan Gleeson is fantastic.Great Irish wit throughout, didnt disappoint.
This is a brilliant small scale film. Brendan Gleeson does a great job as Michael McDongah's main character with his gruff exterior, mordant wit and brave heart. Having a strong Irish heritage myself I'm probably a bit partial to the style of story telling in "The Guard". I loved it. This film in some ways resembles Bill Forsyth's "Local Hero" - a quirky story set in an isolated community - an all time favourite of mine.
An excellent indie movie. The Guard's off-beat comey makes subtle digs at the genres it borrows from. Gleeson is excellent at portraying a serious and pained man disguised behind an eccentric surface.
A fantastic movie. Great script, brilliant acting, funny dialogue and great interaction between the characters. They should make more movies like this.
An unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring. Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle are marvelous. Witty and intelligent dialogue. Loved it
A load of rubbish. We don't need the F word literally as every second word!
Very unusual cop movie. But, very enjoyable nonetheless. Brendon Gleeson as the male lead is terrific. Dry wit, drips sarcasm, deadpan delivery. 10/10. Don Cheadle as his straight man, very good effort 7/10. Cinematography very good. This is definitely a must see movie. The script is brilliant.
An over hyped film and a waste of good lead actors. At least it put me to sleep which counts for something.
This was a weird movie. Very slow to begin with and didn't get any better
Great funny and dark - puts the CSI genre right back where it belongs
Too much unecessary swearing. Hard to watch.
Don Cheadle's quote summed-up my early thoughts about 'The Guard' character in a scene: "You know, I can't tell if you're really motherf****n' dumb, or really motherf****n' smart!". Then you've got to watch it till the end (which in a weird way, wished it wouldn't) to appreciate the 'garda' you hate to love. Even the baddies are too lovable to hate. Brilliant witty dialogues (had to switch on the Eng subtitles to keep up!) with plenty of transpacific/transIrish Sea/transcounty slurs. Definite must see for those who enjoy character-driven comedies and those tempted in visiting Ireland. On Guard!!
Watchable enough, not as good as i thought it would be going by other peoples comments.
The acting in this movie is a real gem and without it the story would simply be boring. The plot is far to be original.
The DVD cover says the funniest movie of the year! Gosh we havent laughed much that year then.
5 stars acting yeah and two stars for the story. I give it a global 3
The Irish accent is a bit thick - but authentic
Good movie and great ending
Great movie a little hard to understand accents but very funny in a dark way.
Terrific acting by whole cast.
The main character's a gnarly Irish twist on the disillusioned loner policeman schtick, and he's terrific. Excellent script, well directed. The finale's a fairly standard shootout, but getting there is well worth your time.
Hilarious! Black comedy. Great twist at end. I had no problems understanding the dialogue.
Sory great but I found the Irish voices hard to listen to and understand.
Enjoyable movie but hard to understand dialogue at times
Best black comedy of the year! Lots of laughs and a great story.
My initial impression was that this film would be just a bad-language extreme-violence free-for-all. Starting off with the most obnoxious character (The Guard - an Irish policeman) being nasty to everyone around him, who was supposed to be the film's hero. But he did grow on me. A nice tight little plot, not too complicated, great acting; a bit of suspense. As final scene was about to unfold I thought it was going to try to be like the boat scene from The Usual Suspects, but it didn't. Ended rather suddenly.
A great black comedy with a bit of action. Don Cheadle is great as the straight man, Gleeson is superb as Boyle, funny stuff.
couldn't get through the first 10 minutes - way too much unnecessary swearing, difficult to understand accents and certainly did not buy into or sympathize in any way with the main character.
good movie,some laughs and action
It seems like a slow typical Pommy film, but has some of that original humour of
that the Irish offer in a subtle way. Worth a look and some recognisable guys.
Quiet night in viewing.
GOOD ENGLISH BLACK HUMOUR WITH A GOOD STORY AND ACTORS. LOVE THE KID (SO FUNNY). MUST SEE.
Brenden Gleason is perfect for this role!! The relationship between Don Cheadie and himself saves this movie from just being another interesting story!
So very Irish and so so funny!!!
Could not stand the first 10 mintues of this movie; I generally like to give a movie the first 30mintues before i start to judge it but i Can Not Stand It.
Loved the Irish taking the piss out of themselves. Loved the over-the-top swearing that managed to remain non-aggressive.
Overall, quite enjoyable with a few laugh out loud moments. Somewhat slow paced around the one third mark but otherwise a kind of languid comedic journey.
Would've liked to see a female in a role of her own rather than adding to a male storyline.
