Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller), single, forty-ish and at a crossroads in his life, finds himself in Los Angeles, house-sitting for six weeks for his more successful/married-with-children brother. In search of a place to restart his life, Greenberg tries to reconnect with old friends including his former band mate Ivan (Rhys Ifans). But old friends aren't necessarily still best friends, and Greenberg soon finds himself spending more and more time with his brother's personal assistant Florence (Greta Gerwig), an aspiring singer and also something of a lost soul. Despite his best attempts not to be drawn in, Greenberg and Florence manage to forge a connection, and Greenberg realises he may at last have found a reason to be happy.

I wouldn't call this a comedy, more of a drama film. It was interesting seeing Ben Stiller in a more serious movie instead of a comedy, and it would be good to see him in more films like this. Enjoyable movie.

Noah Baumbach's film is labeled a comedy but I'm not sure it is -- a black one perhaps. I think it succeeds not by making us laugh but by doing the hard work of creating characters and putting them in reasonably realistic situations and settings. However, Ben Stiller can't help but make things too broad, thereby threatening possible identification with his character. And yes I did half-identify with a 40-something who feels adrift and wants to recapture the feeling of being 20-something -- this film makes it clear that you can't go back again (and really it wasn't how you remember).
