Thank goodness emerald green is such a pleasant colour to look at. Had our hero been called the Sinopia Sunlight or the Rusty Blowtorch, then we would have been forced to endure this terrible screenplay (full of painfully literal dialogue and endless exposition), some wildly misjudged acting choices and been awash in a distressing visual palette. Instead, thanks to the soothing tranquillity of Green Lantern’s signature colour, the potentially-aggressive awfulness of this film is downgraded to an inoffensive, forgettable blandness. So, that’s kind of a compliment. I suspect those things are rare in discussions of Martin Campbell’s adaptation of the DC comic character.

Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, a fighter pilot/loose cannon/smooth-talking, wise-cracking ladykiller/walking cliché selected by a fallen member of the Green Lantern Corps (kind of an intergalactic space cop brigade) to be their first human inductee. Adorned with a will-powered ring (which comes with its own handy, easy-carry charger!), each member has the capability of forging weapons out of their pure imagination, and uses these creations to fight off the fear-inducing evil nasties across the universe. But Jordan isn’t sure he has the bravery to protect the cosmos from such villainy, and fellow Lantern Sinestro (Mark Strong) is similarly dubious of the human’s capability. He is eventually put to the test when old friend Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) becomes infected with the alien powers of the planet-eating Parallax. Jordan must man-up to save Earth - as well as his former-flame Carol Ferris (Blake Lively) - from its clutches.

Reynolds, who was presumably cast because of his normally boundless-charm and certainly not on accounts of his negligible star appeal, sadly sees his charisma sucked into the green screen chasm. Some actors are able to play convincingly in front of a green screen. He is not one of them. Instead, he is doomed to float weightlessly in the fantastical realm of Oa (the planet where the other Green Lanterns chill), which is mighty pretty, but not once believable as a setting where characters interact. Of all the cast, Peter Sarsgaard fares worse, and not just because he has to wear some Elephant Man-style prosthetics whilst screeching like a piglet as the mutated Hammond. He chooses to play the Doctor like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theoryonly less threatening. Also, apparently Sarsgaard’s Hammond went to high school with the characters played by Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, which is perhaps the only joke in the movie to actually land.

Perhaps what is most astounding (Impressive? Bizarre?) about the screenplay - penned by no less than four screenwriters – is how absolutely free of subtext it is. I didn’t even realise that it was possible for a piece of art to be so literal, and so devoid of deeper reading. Everything the characters think, they say. Every piece of information discovered is shared, almost instantly. Everyone tells the truth almost all of the time, and in the rare instances when they don’t, some handy voiceover tells us exactly what it is the characters are really thinking. There are no surprises, no unearthed feelings; the audience is never required to read an actor’s face, or given pause to consider where the story might be going.

There is room for at least another compliment: I did enjoy the way that Campbell embraced the imagination-charged powers of his hero. Although many of the special effects look a little silly and fake, there is some real ingenuity in the weapons created out of thin air by our hero (although the ‘race car’ sequence is almost too stupid to discuss). The final battle with Parallax is perhaps the only action set piece to quicken the pulse, but quicken the pulse it indeed does. Perhaps the real tragedy of this very expensive mess is the fact that there are a number of intriguing characters from DC’s Green Lantern comic history to choose a protagonist out of. Instead, they went with the totally forgettable, handsome, wealthy white-boy with a cheeky sense-of-humour and daddy issues. Because we’ve never seen that before.

2/5

As a character concept, Green Lantern is TERRIBLE. The idea of a guy who can basically do anything he can imagine does not lend itself easily to drama (In the comics they even had to give him a weakness to make him interesting - that weakness was 'the colour yellow'. He's the only superhero that could be beaten by Big Bird from Sesame Street...) However, even a bad concept can be salvaged by good writing. Pity there is none of that on display here. The plot fails miserably - the Green Lantern Corp, essentially an intergalactic police force, of which our protagonist is the newest member, come off as weak and ineffectual - unable to defeat the great evil which Hal Jordan, despite being a newbie member of the Corp, is able to defeat ridiculously easily (yeah, spoilers, the good guys win). The movie features some of the worst CGI I've seen in a major Hollywood movie. For a film that is a reliant on effects as this one, why does the CGI look like something from 10 years ago? Ryan Reynolds does ok, but doesn't have a lot to work with. Blake Lively is decent eye candy, but again there isn't much to the role. The real stand-out performance is Peter Sarsgaard as villain Hector Hammond. He gives a fantastically eccentric performance, and I would have loved to see a movie just about this guy. Unfortunately his character is cast aside in the final act for a climax with a generic 'great evil' type character that should have been saved for a sequel. It really does feel like this movie was two separate scripts unconvincingly stitched together. A poor effort from the film makers. 1/5

Much better than I was expecting a good 'family movie', probably enjoyed more by my Husband and the Grandchildren than me but as far as a comic book themed movie it was ok! Hmmm decided to go up to 3 stars instead of two? ? ?

While I like Sci-Fi and Comic book inspired movies, this one failed to develop into something I'd watch again. It's as bad as, no maybe worse than, the original Hulk movie (the one with Eric Bana).

Once you get over the stupid dialogues and ridiculous costume, it gets pretty alright and equal to The Hulk or Iron Man actually which isn't bad. Definitely far better than THOR which was a real stinker. The Green Lantern visual effects are splendid and the storyline is ok with great villain.

Yeah it was ok. Ryan Reynolds is such a likeable character that most of what he does is pretty watchable. Rather ridiculous storyline and ending but it's not a bad movie.

I thought that the whole point of a lantern ring was for an imaginative average joe to be able to create clever ways of defeating his enemies. Not super powers or super strength. The people who made this movie think it makes you a green-coloured superman, without imagination or anything like normality. If I wanted a superman movie, I'd watch one. This was a cheap copy. He doesn't even put a breather on when he goes into space, probably so they can show his face more for the movie screen. And it was so booooring. If you've ever read a comic or graphic novel, don't bother watching this movie.

They could of done amazing things with this but failed. It's the Green Lantern, come on! The sky isn't even the limit! A toned down Reynolds here was great, he was a good pick for this film. Sadly, it lacked a solid storyline here and to be truthful a forgetful one at that. Understandably, this is only an introduction to the world of the Green Lantern for newbies and would be perfect for anybody who's curious.

Good fun movie. Big fan of Ryan Renolds and he doesn't disappoint. Great effects but the climax, and even the story at times, felt a bit too rushed. Hope there is a sequel and they can improve on this good effort. 3.5

i would have rated this more stars but for the bullywould 'formula'........... stupid bimbo meets stupid hero type propaganda all the way through. I personally am 135% over this genre & are now boycotting this boredom. 'y gen' out there who have been brainwashed into believing that god made this genre 'through america's eyes' will undoubtably love this & wonder what in the hell i'm talking about but those left with half a brain will get it

I had the misfortune to see this on a plane to Bali. Thank goodness for the fast-forward button. The characters are portrayed without charisma or energy. Blake Lively as an airforce trainer? Puhlease. This is so bad it reinforces the superhero movies that are done very well (The Dark Knight, first Spiderman etc). Avoid. You'll be cross you wasted time putting it in your queue, waiting for it to arrive, waiting for something better in your queue to then be sent.
