Action violence and coarse language

Director: Michel Gondry
Actors: Seth Rogen, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, Tom Wilkinson, Edward James Olmos, Edward Furlong

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles' largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid's shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

The Green Hornet looks and feels as if it were made by a bunch of (highly talented) 10-year-old boys. Taking any pleasure in the film depends on your willingness to let your inner-child run rampant and help you regress to your days of impish mischievousness; when you and your friends hurtled through your house dressed like superheroes, inventing outrageous scenarios and attacking one another with playful, violent glee. Penned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who famously wrote the first draft of their surprisingly astute teen sex comedy Superbad at the age of 14) and directed by Michel Gondry (whose films are littered with nostalgic flashbacks to days of innocence and juvenilia), this modern take on the classic comic serial The Green Hornet is nothing like the adaptations that have come be...

Penned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (who famously wrote the first draft of their surprisingly astute teen sex comedy Superbad at the age of 14) and directed by Michel Gondry (whose films are littered with nostalgic flashbacks to days of innocence and juvenilia), this modern take on the classic comic serial The Green Hornet is nothing like the adaptations that have come before it. Insulting to the legacy? Perhaps. But since when did reckless kids care about what the adults thought?

Britt Reid is like Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark before him: a chauvinistic bed-hopping billionaire playboy with pangs of conscience (minus the pangs of conscience). Oh sure, he doesn’t like the fact that Los Angeles is bursting at the seams with nasty drug dealers and gangsters – specifically the sharply-dressed crime-overlord Chudnofsky (a fun, sadly underutilised Christoph Waltz) – but he has no real intention to do anything about it. When his judgmental father (Tom Wilkinson) dies of a bee sting, Britt takes over his position as editor of newspaper The Daily Sentinel. He has mixed feelings about his dad’s death. On the one hand, he was a self-righteous jerk who chastised Britt for not living a meaningful life. On the other hand…actually, nope that’s it. Screw dad! Britt and his father’s mechanic Kato (the sweetly charming Jay Chou) decide to decapitate the head of Reid Sr.’s memorial statue (a sly wink to a classic Simpsons’ episode, and a hint at the film’s anarchic nature). After committing the deed, they witness – as all wannabe vigilantes ultimately do – a vicious mugging, and successfully intervene. Drunk on violence, self-worth, and, well, alcohol, the duo decide to become crime fighters, using The Daily Sentinel to publish stories to advance the legend of Britt (newly christened as The Green Hornet) and Kato (well, they’ll think of a cool superhero name for him later).

I love the wickedness of this film, both in regards to its cheekiness and bodaciality (as in, the act of being bodacious). It makes you want to drive cars fast and invent outrageous weaponry (a particular favourite of mine includes Chudnofsky’s double-gun). There is a wanton disregard for human life here; villains are dispatched brutally and efficiently in a variety of innovative ways. Batman may leave his arch-enemies alive for the authorities to arrest, but Britt and Kato have no qualms with actually killing their foes. Bad role models? When you played ‘Cops and Robbers’ as a kid, did you stop to read the criminals their rights? Hell no; you gunned them down where they stood. I’m not saying kids know best how to handle law enforcement, but there is a lot of cheeky fun to be had in a film that embraces that kind of silliness. And it’s not as if Gondry wants us to take it all that seriously; his camera lens bends and stretches to the whims of the time-stopping, gravity-defying and fabric-of-the-universe-tearing Kato. This is a cartoon, and thank goodness for that.

Of course, the joyous chaos produced by 10-year-old boys (at heart) with a multi-million dollar budget can cause some problems. Britt and Kato’s motives – much like the film’s plot - are loose and fluid, which is a polite way to say, unimportant, and disregarded almost immediately. Rogen’s Reid acts like an immature 10-year-old for much of the film; he hollers, howls, whinges, is desperate for affection and treats women – particularly his assistant (Cameron Diaz, in one of the most cursory female supporting roles in recent history) like dirt. Rogen has never had trouble being charming in earlier films, and when required he can play an incomparably awful human being (as he did in the brilliant Observe and Report). Here, he finds himself sandwiched between these two extremes, coming off sweet one moment and oppressively boorish the next. But hey, little kids do that all the time, so maybe it’s intentional. I hope audiences embrace The Green Hornet, so that we can see a second instalment of this tale. And with its success, perhaps Gondry and Rogen– already working on a long leash – will be given complete control and be able to take this bizarre new superhero property to its logical conclusion. Gondry can try out even more brazen stunts (he does feel mildly restrained here), and Rogen can refine his Britt Reid further, and perhaps commit to making him an unrepentant jerk (a’la the similarly misogynistic satirical spy Archer). It’s not my money. I say Gondry and Rogen use these million dollar budgets to make something really crazy. The Green Hornet is almost there.

4/5

While the acting was fine, within the limits of the narrative, the film was dreadful. Couldn't watch it. Might appeal to 14 year old males, just feeling their first rush of testosterone.

Absolute rubbish unfortunately, and we could not even watch the whole film. The previews were better than the movie, and the reviews on how bad it was were right.

Better than others in this genre, but 30 mins too long. Getting tired of Seth Rogan humour (yelling / screaming). Chase soon too long. Couple of laugh out loud moments but too far apart.

I expected worse. Yes, it was still written for 15 year old boys, but it had some one-time laughs. Kinda reminded me of when I first saw Happy Gilmore, and I laughed out loud. When I saw it again it wasn't funny. I'm not going to watch The Green Hornet again.

I can understand some people being annoyed by Seth Rogan's character, but once you better understand why is this way (and his relationship with his old man), he actually becomes quite likeable. Some great photography and action sequences, a few cool gadgets and laughs later, and this is quite an enjoyable ride. Definitely worth a look, just don't take it too seriously and you'll have fun. Not exactly a "chick-flick".

Very cool. It's a comedy. It's got action and it's fun. If you expected anything else you are watching the wrong movie. I really loved this movie and "got" what the creators were trying to do here. It seems the other reviewers may have missed the point. It's a clever spoof/twist on normal superhero movies with the sidekick "Kato" being the hero and Seth rogan being the idiot main. I think it worked really well and laughed a lot.

Honestly, this was forgettable. See it once, and you never need to again. Seth Rogen as Britt Reid was terribly annoying and will get on most people's nerves (which is somewhat the point, but it got rather old and fast) Kato, Jay Chou, was this film's only saving grace. As was Christopher Waltz.

This was a barely passable film. It could have been a great film, except of one thing.. Seth Rogen. He has yet again played himself, and I don't know what the producers were thinking - oh that's right, Seth Rogen was a producer! I get the homage to Bruce Lee's Kato (and the fact that Bruce Lee was much more awesome in the TV series than the super hero he was suppose to be a side kick to), but it was a flimsy premise to base a whole film on. Nonetheless the movie was saved from the bin pile thanks to the character of Kato was awesome (well done Jay Chou) and the action scenes were cool, and the Black Beauties absolutely rock!

The Green Hornet is quite an exciting action/comedy movie, i actually only decided to watch it due to one of my more serious friends who usually hates all action, comedy, and sci-fi movies, of how good this actually was, and i must say, she wasnt wrong, its not the best movie ive ever seen, but i would definately recommend it to anyone who were to ask me for some good movies to watch. I would have actually liked to have given this movie a rating of four and a half stars. The only reason they missed the whole five stars, is really because the movie seemed quite short to me. Again though, definately a movie worth watching.

Hmm. Often wanted to slap Seth Rogan's spoiled character for being such a childish twat - so I suppose that means Seth suceeded in his portrayal. Jay Chou is ultra cute and watchable and Cameron played kick ass well. It's ok - not memorable.

For a fan of comic books and stories of this nature, sadly i'll say i was disipointed. Moments of humour and slapstick comedy did not add enough value to the storyline. Over the top special effects, while impressive - seemed well - over the top! sadly the actors playing key roles did little to assist with blurred language and a need for subtitles on occasion. Suggest that this one be watched and loved by teenagers that havent yet discovered Batman!

Oh dear. Think of your most irritating colleague, neighbour, extended family member etc: Dial up the irritation factor by a couple of notches and you have the Seth Rogen character in this truly pitiful movie (Rogen has a production credit which explains a lot). Add to that a story line that makes 'This Little Piggy' look like Chekhov and more mindless killing than a Taratino film (without the humour) and you have this complete waste of celluloid. Even the recreation of Black Beauty and the presence of Cameron Diaz and Tom Wilkinson could not save it from its place amongst the growing list of super hero movies that failed to translate from the comic book or television to the big screen.

I'm not a huge Seth Rogen fan but I got this anyway because I'm familiar with the Green Hornet character through comics and the old movies with Bruce Lee as Kato. This new action/comedy take on the story works well. It has charm, cheeky humour and cool fight sequences and car stunts. I'd watch it again.
