Based on the Dickens novel and winner of two Academy Awards, Great Expectations tells the story of Pip (John Mills), a blacksmith’s apprentice who inherits a handsome property. However, Pip’s great expectations have emanated from another quarter. The first Dickens novel that Lean adapted for the screen, it was voted the fifth greatest British film of the twentieth century by the British Film Institute.

By today's standards this 1946 film is a bit of a letdown. The opening scenes with the young Pip and the luminous Estella (Jean Simmons) are terrific. John Mills and Valerie Hobson look far too old as the same characters "down the track" and the "fight" scenes with the Alec Guiness character and the scene with the funbled hat are poorly handled. Having said that the photography is terrific and the fire scene with Miss Haversham is stunning. Viewed in historic context this film of Dickens' famous novel is worth considering.
