LOW LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: John Sturges
Actors: James Coburn, Donald Pleasence, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald

In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft North, a maximum security prisoner-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history-brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn-who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar), and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that "entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs" (Variety).

Dramatic tension, perfectly timed comedic moments and it's all based on a true story. That's why this film is a classic!

It was an ok movie. I found the story was quite hard to follow at points. It did have great camera work and good actors though. I wish I could give it 3 and a half stars.

The story of the attempted escape of over 75 Military POW's from the UK, USA and Australia from a newly built POW camp in Germany. Their early success, then their recapture proves that freedom comes at a price when 50 of the 75 are killed by a firing squad instead of being returned to the camp. Based on the true story of many men who served during WWII against Germany and their allies.

This iis great movie even by today's standards. The cast is outstanding despite James Coburn doing one of the worst Aussie accents ever put on celluloid. The movie is not 4:3 fullframe as listed but an non-anamorphic letterbox widescreen presentation that always disappoints owners of big widescreen displays.

Brilliant movie. Holds its own after all these years. Watch the Special Edition DVD that comes with it also as the real story is told. As usual Hollywood didn't allow facts to get in the way of a good story.
