Doing Business In Moscow Can Be Murder.

Murder, seduction and intrigue in the Kremlin form the backdrop for Gorky Park. Scripted by Dennis Potter from Martin Cruz Smith's best seller and directed by the versatile Michael Apted, Gorky Park is a gripping, intricate thriller co-starring Lee Marvin in his last great performance. When three murder victims are discovered in Moscow's Gorky Park - their faces and fingertips removed - detective Arkady Renko (William Hurt) is determined to identify the bodies and find the killer.

But as a picture of the victims takes shape, the clues point towards involvement not only of the KGB but also of the woman he loves, Irina (Joanna Pacula). Now, hunted by the secret police and confronted by an intricate web of deception and treachery reaching to the highest political levels, Renko will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and bring the killer to justice - even if it means guaranteeing his own destruction and losing Irina forever.

Nothing spectacular, but the crime thriller aspects mixed with a recreation of life in Moscow in the 1980s is quite fresh. Plus, Brian Dennehy rocks. Certainly worth more than the 3/5 I've given it, but I'm uncertain if I'd deem it worthy of a 4/5.

Hurt miscast as Renko. The music is over the top and very intrusive. If you hadn't read the book I doubt you'd have any idea of plot.

A bit long and quite dated, but a good spy thriller, with a slightly improbable end.
