Actors: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, Lena Endre, Peter Haber

Please note this is the original Swedish language version.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger (Julia Sporre) disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Haven't read the book and didn't know anything about this movie before watching it. I was even surprised when it turned out to be in Swedish however I thought it was a fantastic movie, great story and superb acting.

A gripping mystery that we couldn't stop watching. For once the sub titles weren't a problem. Strong content though and definately Adults only

To understand the plot you have to read the book first as not only is the movie very sketchy with the plot it is not in English. Don'rt bother if you do not fancy reading subtitles. The book was gripping but the movie pretty average

Taut, well acted suspense drama, a little in your face at times but very important to the movie. Needs to be seen with "Kicked the Hornets nest" to understand he whole story... Would recommend them to fans of gritty european intelligent drama.

Brilliant! You do have to get past the whole sub title thing, and the two rape scenes - but the story, acting, and movie as a whole is brilliant. Very absorbing - even to the point that you don't realise there are subtitles any more!!

hmmm, excellent thriller and very well acted.... you stay puzzled until the end.. and there are still questions left... we might learn in the next movie.... eg: where does Lisbeth herself fit in? definitly worth watching. worth 6 out of 5stars! (btw for those that have their dvd 'freesing' all the time.. it could be your dvd player... I had the same problems that sometimes the dvd would freese, other times it played fine. getting itnow fixed :D )

Own the book but haven't read it. It's a good, gripping old fashioned story. enjoyed seeing decent acting and a cracking storyline dominate rather than big budget set pieces and glitzy backdrops.

A complex thriller. I found the violence toward women portrayed in this movie quite disturbing at times. The character of Lisbeth was intriguing - I am looking forward to seeing the next movie in the series.

A good film with a lot of depth. I Don't usually go for murder mystery but this one resonates afterward because the characters are intriguing. Love the exposure of Sweden - its a country we see little of in films here. My partner ordered this based on the book and enjoyed it. I never suspected it would be subtitled, nor its book origins but enjoyed it too. The dialogue is very fast in the early parts and so expect to miss a bit of face reading while you're preoccupied guzzling down the lines of text at the base of the screen. It backs off fairly quickly to a normal pace though. A definite hit if you like foreign films and maybe also the genre.

Quite good but could have been better. Maintains the tension and mystery very well. Acting is quite good. Very dark. You never really find out what Lisbeth's interest in the case is. Why is she there in the first place? You'd have to read the book for that. The romantic relationship between Lisbeth and Mikael is not very convincing. Unlikely lovers, I'd say. But definitely entertaining and worth watching.
