Daniel Craig did well in this movie - I think though where he shines best is 007
Surprisingly good American version of a great Swedish book and film. I would definitely recommend it. Be aware some of the scenes are quite disturbing but an integral part of the story.
Really good movie.Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig were excellent in the lead roles,as were all actors concerned.
Another version of the original, but very well done.
Just as intense and thrilling as its Swedish counterpart. Daniel Craig is a bit less visually tormented than Michael Nyqvist but still manages to be all broody. I also think Noomi Rapace does a much better Lisbeth Salander, but its visually just as stunning and captivating.
Fantastic plot, at times a bit long winded but great storyline, gripping and steely.
Excellent, although you have to pay attention :-)
Excellent. The director (David Fincher) has done an outstanding job. This longish movie went so quickly indicating just how good it was paced, directed and acted. Loved Daniel Craig and Stellan Skarsgard in their roles, Christopher Plummer was his usual top shelf self, but the standout was Rooney Mara. Probably better than 4 stars. Fairly graphic but highly recommended.
All the rape, none of the subtitles.
GOOD MOVIE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE.
Excellent! Maybe a bit too long but I enjoyed this movie. The revenge scene was brilliant!
Great movie, a little graphic in parts but excellent plot.
I loved the original Swedish film and was worried that Hollywood would destroy this brilliant story but I am thrilled to be wrong....it's an excellent adaptation of the original and worth every minute. Daniel Craig was fabulous and no Bond pouty mouth which was a nice change, All actors did an above average performance to make the story come to life.
Most of the film was good, but I didn't enjoy some of it.
better now without sub titles
Not having read the book, I did not know what to expect. I found it interesting and would certainly recommend it.
below average as a film, the only thing I liked was Daniel Craig. with his shirt off!!! anyway, for story, for acting for action, the original Swedish version was way better. this American version is just lacking that spark.
As usual, the book was better, but enjoyable none the less.
Brilliant movie. Wasn't quite sure for the 1st 45mins, but then the movie started to come together and wow - thought provoking, twists and that dark edge that pushes the boundaries. The main characters in Daniel Craig & Rooney Mara played great parts, even though a real unlikely couple. Worth watching the Directors Comments as well - quite interesting... Will have to see the Swedish version now looking at the other comments.
I haven't read the book, but have a whole family who has and highly recommend it. Totally don't understand some of the negative views posted here. Compared to the vast majority of Hollywood rubbish I have watched over the last 12 months, this is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Well worth watching 100% of the movie until the very end.
Now I have to read the book. I highly recommend this film.
Really couldn't get into it,tried to but turned it off after 40mins
Compared to the Swedish productions, despite the care taken with locations and atmosphere, the major changes to the book turn this into just another glossy but non engaging thriller. Miscasting of the main characters doers not help.
And, as with so many these days, you need the subtitles to follow the all important dialogue. For pleasure read the unputdownable books.
I didn't expect to like this version after seeing the Swedish version but I did. Daniel Craig was excellent, I wasn't so keen on Rooney Mara; I think the actress from the Swedish version was better. The ending to the movie was a bit disappointing. The film stayed true to the book.
I reluctantly watched this movie as it was recommended by a friend- I haven't read the books or watched the other version of this. To my surprise I really enjoyed it. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara were fantastic.
This movie just didn't appeal to me at all. I'm still not sure why. The investigation seemed too simple. The rape scenes and rape theme throughout was offputting to me. I don't get why Lisbeth was marketed as the main character,m when clearly Mikael is. Her characted had no substance and was quite boring. I thought this was about computer hacking, but had little to do with that. Perhaps viewers are supposed to have read the book first, I'm not sure. Just overly long and not enjoyable.
I thought this was exciting and engrossing, from the stunning opening credits. I had the English subtitles on while I was watching it which helped enormously as the soundtrack was poor. I haven't read the book or seen the Swedish version though, so I knew nothing about the plot or characters. Definitely worth watching.
Having seen and enjoyed the original and sequel movies I was skeptical of this remake... however was suprised to find that I enjoyed it. Slightly different to the original, just enough to maintain interest without ruining the storyline.
Very good movie, although probably not as good as the original, it was a relief not to have to read subtitleshough, didn't like where they ended the movie though, a bit abrupt and weird.
‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ could do with judicial pruning. It’s a complicated movie that doesn’t reach its stride until well into the first half. The two major plotlines are finally interwoven, one satisfyingly predictable but not so the other. While it’s essentially a thriller, and the movies works well at this level, the more interesting theme is the physical attraction that develops between the two leads, which explores age difference, bisexuality, instability and female assertiveness.
a little slow in the beginning but other wise a good remake
I loved this film, edgy, with a good storyline, kept me hooked, great acting from both leads.
Great story, great actors!!!
Hadn't read the book but enjoyed this film. Thought both lead characters were mis-cast: Daniel Craig, as a publicly humiliated journalist driven to uncover the truth and restore his credibility and Rooney Mara, as the socially-inept flawed genius, lacked conviction and chemistry.
This covered Larsson's storyline extremely well and gave a much more complete picture than the foreign film. If you've read the book then this is recommended viewing.
As others have said, the sound was not great in this movie. I had read the book before watching it and I was left feeling pretty disappointed - the book was far better and the ending of the movie was a massive let down. My husband who had not read the book said the ending was ok for him.
Great story and well produced movie. All of the actors are well cast. I liked the Swedish version and this is just as good.
very close to the book. some parts of the book were left out, such as a spy in the magazine, a relationship the main character had with one of the suspects, and the trip to australia. but if those thing were added to the story it would have added another 20 - 30 minutes.
great acting.
Probably would have been a great movie if I could have understood half of what was said. I know I'm going deaf but felt the sound track was a shocker...
Wow loved it saw the other version loved that wasn't sure what to expect was ver good
I liked the foreign language version better.
I really liked this movie. It was edgy and dark and a few of the scenes had me looking away from the television (you will know it when you see it!). I would have given it 4 stars but it was so hard to hear the people talking that my partner kept rewinding it (we are only in our 20's so we arent deaf!) and i found myself stringing the conversations together with the few bits that i actually did hear. Other then the sound it is great, i haven't watched the swedish version though so it would be interesting to see how it differs.
OK it is similar (very similar) to the Swedish version, however just different enough to be different. I really can't say which version I prefer, they are both good in their own right., certainly well worth a watch
What can I say? The original Swedish version is far better. Starts with a typical hollywood makeover of loud music and a sort of 007 lead in. Rooney Mara is good but no better than Rapace in the original. Maybe because I have seen the original, I just could not find this hollywood version anywhere near as exciting, regardless of how much I wanted to. See the original, is my advice.
Wonder when Hollywood will do a version of 'Headhunters'??
Terribly boring film. The Swedish version is 100% better. Don't bother with this film
Most of the 39 reviews below suggest the original Swedish film even with subtitles was better. I agree I gave it 5 stars. Watching the American version (3 stars) was a little confusing as it differed slightly but I knew that would happen. The acting and intensity of the film was not as good. This Lisbeth was to clever to soon. The heavy rape scenes were disturbing but necessary for the story line. Recommend you hire the 3 Swedish versions over time for a good night's entertainment.
Right, so there was 2 versions of this film made. I liked this one 'slightly' more than the swedish version. Daniel Craig was good and I dont like him in everything, here he was good. Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace were both great in both versions. I cant separate them (but also wasnt paying close attention to comparisons). The rape scenes had me covering my butt hole and going 'ouch' and Im not usually squeamish... hope thats not bad language for this review. Anyway, 4/5
This will stay with you for a few days so probably make sure you're in a 'good place' before viewing. Contains some dark material. That said, it's well made and rather hypnotising. The bleak, unforgiving Swedish winter suitably reflects the harsh interiors of most of the film's protagonists.
Fantastic movie in it's own right. But definately not true to the book.
This version of the film is completely pointless. Every aspect of the film is less appealing than the spectacular original Swedish version. The main characters are poorly developed and portrayed hollowly by both Rooney Mara and (to a lesser extent) Daniel Craig and their relationship, which is a focal point of the story, is completely void of chemistry or believability. Noomi Rapace's Lisbeth was complicated and engaging; sadly, Rooney Mara's version was anything but, not to mention extremely physically unattractive, making the movie very hard to watch. Unlike the Swedish version, this version contains no subtleties which in the original version not only helped to develop the story but also the viewer's engagement in the film. Also worth a mention is the barrage of strategically placed McDonalds, Coca Cola and 7Eleven products, requisite in any American movie but which are extremely irritating in this setting. In short, this movie is a pale imitation of the original.
Excellent very close in keeping with the book
It's not a patch on the original Swedish trilogy but this isn't a bad film. It's stylish and sticks mainly to the book (which is already a rambling, convoluted tale to start with). I enjoyed Daniel Craig's portrayal of Mikael Blomkvist, it seemed closer to the version of him I had in my head. I was all set to hate Rooney Mara portrayal because I genuinely thought Noomi Rapace nailed Lisbeth in the Swedish version....however she was actually very, very good. She seemed more social in this version but there was real intelligence behind the blank gaze. There were some lovely touches here though, like the scene when Lisbeth goes shopping prior to her revenge scene on Bjurman and she shops for gaffer tape, ink, rope and a happy meal! Very funny.! Entertaining and gruesome, just like the book. I hope they make the other two.
Good story line. Great scenes. Good acting Totally ruined by overpowering background music.
I go through life WITHOUT background music why cannot they make a movie without it.
The original is way better and easier to understand even with it's subtitles. Daniel Craig plays his part well but Mara Rooney sorry to say doesn't come close to the original Lisbeth.
I was totally entertained from start to finish. Well worth watching more than once. Best movie I have seen in a while.
Great. I thought this was quite well done.
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
I enjoyed the movie but it is not a patch on the original Swedish version! Pretty good English version, but in my opinion pretty unnecessary when there's already a recent and superior version out there. Just goes to show that having a big budget does not always make a better movie. Still enjoyable but do yourself a favour and watch the original!
I have read the books (before all the films) and love them. Nice to watch but this version isn't a patch on the original set of 3 done by the swedes
Excellent movie, keeps you interested the whole time, great viewing.
Did not enjoy the movie way to disturbing.
Much prefer the original but Daniel Craig's portrayal isn’t a bad effort, but like I said the original is so much better, still worth a viewing.
Prefer the original so much better. Such a shame that some people cant be bothered with foreign subtitled films, however this film is not a bad remake. daniel Craig is gorgeous.
Just received it and the disk is a burnt DVD-R!! Is that even legal???
Worth watching but smoothes out almost all of the rough raw unexected touches of the book and Swedish movie version
Unfortunately, the Swedish version with subtitles has the edge. This version too glitzy and less authentic.
Very good movie with all the twists & plenty of action
I've read all the books and seen the original Swedish movies. Wasn't expecting much from an American remake, but they did pretty well with this one. Some things are obviously a little different, but I think they kept pretty true to the books. Maybe they'll remake the whole trilogy??
Not a bad movie at all but I felt it was way too long. Daniel Craig was good and more suited to the role than the original and Rooney Mara plays Lisbeth as much more fragile than the original but I don't think she was as good. Also, the Americans just can't help themselves - they have to explain every little thing just in case you are too dumb to work it out for yourself.
I have seen all three of the original swedish movies and did not expect this to match up but it did !!!!. In fact the characacter of michael b. as played by daniel craig was much closer to my mental image of this character.when I read the books. well done.. will they make the rest of te triligy too ?.. I hope so
I wasnt expecting it to be as good as the original Swedish version but it was very well done
The story line was great. Very entertaining! I did find it hard at times to understand what the girl was saying but otherwise a great movie
I enjoyed this movie very much
Good movie, some pretty full on rape scenes so BE PREPARED if that's something you don't enjoy watching.
Good story and I liked they didn't Americanise the movie too much. Bit slow at the start but stick with it.
Be aware that this is NOT a typical American Movie. The accents are thick, the actors mumble alot (almost need English Subtitles in this version too!), very real acting rather than polished, music in the background takes a while to stop becomming distracting. Not complaining, just pointing out to be prepared that this is a different style so it doesn't dissapoint.
Amazing movie! Loved it to bits
What an absolutely brilliant film, brilliant acting, so worth it
loved it and lisbeth and michel all over again. have now seen swedish & US version and read the three books. will never tire of it
Surprisingly well done by the American film makers. I thought they may have gone over the top, but they have stayed fairly close to the original story and this one compares well to the Swedish movie - although I do still prefer the Swedish version despite the subtitles.
Having read the book and seen the Swedish version there was not much to be gained from seeing this version, but it is not a bad movie.
Why was it called The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? That's like calling Psycho "The Woman Who Stole Some Money". The movie wasn't about her, she was just a character in it. Title issues aside, I did like David Fincher's atmospheric direction, but the awesome Bond-on-hallucinogenics opening credit sequence promised a bit too much that the rest of the film didn't deliver. Haven't seen the originals and haven't read the book, and would've loved to have seen a movie that catered to someone new to the series, and not treated it's audience like hardcore fans who knew every little thing about it before watching it. If you're a fan, add a star. Take one away because Rooney Mara is so hip and cool she's unlikeable. Daniel Craig is good.
After watching the Swedish version, I wasn't expecting too much from this movie, but I must say it was enjoyable and entertaining.
Rooney Mara is in my opinion one of the greatest and most convincing actresses I have ever seen. She plays a most believable character and had me glued to the screen from beginning to end. It is not a film to be missed
Overly long and drawn out. Haven't seen the sub titled (foreign) version but I've got no intention of seeking it out after wading through this one.
Nice remake worth watching, some very nice screen plays.
I was a bit unsure since the Swdish version was so good, But I think this one equals it. There is one very smal deviation from book and orginal at the end, but it doesn't take away from it. They managed to cathch the Swedish feel, the light. I was suprised but I loved it.
Yankees can't read subtitles so they have to spend millions and remade it. The original swedish version was simply excellent, suspenseful with chilling moments while the US version and particularly the investigation seems too easy. The clues pile up too fast making Lisbeth looking like some kind of genius, super women or robot whom with the help of her computer can find out, point out linked murders that 40 years of investigation were not able to figure out. Also Mikael's daughter was capable in a quick look to relate numbers to the bible... Wow isn't she smart? I like David Fisher but his job on this remake was to overdo everything like Americans are used to..over explaining just in case idiots were watching and couldn't understand what is not obviously explained or shown. Regarding the actors, I also found the Swedish actors more believable. If you have not seen the original or read the book, watching the US version is a plain mistake as the actor playing the bad guy is the type of actors who can't p,ay something else but that type of roles. Fisher has just copied and added up a touch of Hollywood which includes an end quite different and disappointing. So yeah the picture is sharp, clean..yeah the opening credits are impressing but is it worth the original version? Hell no!
Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are very well cast in this whodunnit. Solid acting by both. The director keeps your interest with a combination of both fast and slowed paced intervals.
Well, I was a bit sceptical after watching the Swedish version first, but I must admit - I thoroughly enjoyed this film. From the excellent opening, right through to the end it was as good as the original. The only thing is though.....if the original version was that good - why make another? I feel the western, English-speaking world needs to embrace and enjoy 'foreign' language films for what they are, and not feel the need to appease the masses that are frankly too lazy, or stubborn, to appreciate a great film with subtitles rolling across the bottom of the screen........ nonetheless, a great piece of viewing - get it watched!
It was a great film. If you've read the book and seen the Swedish version you know exactly what to expect with this. The acting is brilliant, the music and scenery are beautiful.
Its a shame they had to change the ending, but at least it didn't alter the storyline too greatly. Some scenes will be quite hard to watch for those new to the story. Oh... and catch the awesome opening titles. Definitely my favourite part of the film.
