Strong sexual violence, coarse language and sex scene

Director: Niels Arden Oplev
Actors: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, Lena Endre, Peter Haber

Please note this is the original Swedish language version.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger (Julia Sporre) disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Here’s a fun fact: Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was originally named ‘Men Who Hate Women’ in its Swedish homeland. Niels Arden Oplev – the filmmaker responsible for bringing the book to the screen – missed a trick by not similarly naming his adaptation ‘Directors Who Hate Viewers’. Much like his intensely-hateful characters, he seems to take great delight in subjecting his audience to some cinematic torture. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a rape-and-murder-mystery sans the mystery, and a character-drama minus the character … and drama. I personally find the wide-spread affection for this movie astounding. The film versions of the late Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy (which include Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest) are box office blockbusters in Scandinavia, and have been similarly successful abroad. Do people love the original book so much they’re willing to forgive a film that is sorely lacking in substance, motivation, action, tension, ambiguity and style?

The film stars the excellent-but-ultimately-wasted Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, a criminal computer-hacker who lazily assists journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) in the hunt for a particularly uninteresting serial killer. Lisbeth is dour, determined and (obviously) dragon-tattooed. We’re told that she’s been sexually abused in the past, and shown that she’s being sexually in the present (by her parole officer no less). This, for some reason, is motive enough for her to become interested in Blomkvist’s investigation of a missing girl. That’s probably all you need to know, and frankly, all I can be bothered to divulge about the paint-by-numbers plot. Let’s get back to the title.

Men Who Hate Women is the better label for a number of reasons. First of all, the eponymous ‘Girl’ is absolutely a non-character, and not at all deserving of having a film named after all. Secondly, she is grossly outranked by the film’s almost-comical number of misogynists, who each reveal themselves throughout the interminable two-and-a-half hour runtime as if emerging from a clown-car. Were the international distributors of the book and film concerned that having the words ‘men’, ‘hate’ and ‘women’ in the title would make us immediately assume the film was misogynistic itself? That’s silly. The content of the film – in which the acts of rape, child molestation, gendercide and the methodical psychological abuse of females are tossed off as exploitative, dismissive plot points – would be reason enough to make that assumption.

I’m not necessarily accusing Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg of misogyny. But I don’t understand why audiences would cheer on the ‘Girl’, when you can instead root for Antichrist’s ‘She’; a woman who is similarly broken down by a cruel man, and also takes her bloody revenge. At least ‘She’ is a character. Why accuse Antichrist director Lars von Trier of hating women, when he offers a richer, more sympathetic depiction of a woman ruined by male cruelty? The problem is not (only) that Lisbeth is an irresponsibly constructed “hero”. It’s that she’s an intensely boring one too.

Lisbeth is supposedly spunky, but we only ever see her being abused by men, or settling the score in a rather aloof manner. Neither of these extremes elicits much of an emotional reaction. That’s not necessarily a flaw in the film; in fact it makes sense for Lisbeth to remain desensitised to such trauma after the abuse she’s suffered in her life. But we never really learn about her trauma, and have no sense of her character outside of this abuse. She’s a computer hacker … but why? Because it’s cool? As we already know, computer hacking is one of the least interesting things to watch on screen, and among the laziest of screenwriting tricks (every piece of info required in this case is practically Googled). Is this really all there is to this character? Is she merely a thing to be raped? A nonentity with access to the internet? This isn’t a human being.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one hell of a slog. It’s unencumbered by personality or finesse. I’ve not read Larsson’s original book, but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and presume that in its 450-plus page length it offers the depth and motivation absent from the film. Perhaps the book crafts tension, instead of merely trying to hit the requisite beats of a procedural, as if it were an episode of Law and Order: Stockholm. Maybe Lisbeth Salander is actually a character in Larsson’s novel, instead of just a faux-gothic cipher fuelled by a vaguely-defined sense of vengeance. Perhaps the 180-minute extended edition of the film that screened on Swedish television fills in all the gaps that I’ve been complaining about. Maybe that’s the one I should sit down to watch. Hmm…

1.5/5

Not having read the book or seen the english version I wasn't sure what to expect. The movie is violent (an understatement in some scenes) but the acting is brilliant and the story rivetting. This movie stays with you long after it's finished. Definitely worth watching but not for the faint hearted!

Excellent in every way! The story lines of both the journo-investigator and the computer hacker Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as well as the stories they investigated were well intergrated and the sub-titles kept up clearly with the dialogue so it was not at all distracting. It was very clever if rather gluesome.

I loved, loved, LOVED it! I've read the books awhile back and I listened to people to NOT watch the movies but finally I succumbed to my curiousity. I'm glad I did. Adapted really well to film and the casting was very much perfect, in my opinion. The subtitles didn't bother me - I learned pretty quickly not do mend the socks while trying to watch! lol. I strongly recommend for people to watch it to make up your own mind about it.

I really enjoyed the movie. People should watch it, despite the subtitles. If you are a confident reader of English, you will be able to follow the movie without being conscious of the fact that you don't understand what they are saying. Your brain adjusts quickly to reading instead of listening. Give it another shot! Like others, I feel there was too much hype surrounding these movies, but they have to do what sells! However, I am looking forward to seeing the last of the trilogy.

I watched it all way through, I didn't mind the subtitles but I don't know what all the fuss is about in terms of this being a really great movie. It was just a who dun it type, a bit more graphic than what you get on TV but not amazing. It could have been a TV drama. Its not rubbish but its not brilliant either.

To the reviewer: You can't give such a horribly astonishing review to a movie that was adapted from a book when you haven't even read it! The books are fantastic and of course, movies rarely match up to the characters and tension in the book, but really - it wasn't that bad. 1.5 stars is a bit harsh. Go read the book. I give it 5.5/10

This is the original and probably best version of this film. For Swedish film buffs, there are a few familiar faces in the cast and the production values do not disappoint. The dark secrets of this wealthy family fit into the cold remoteness of the location; the brooding history of world war two affiliations lurk beneath the surface of wealth and priviledge. This is a gripping thriller!

Seriously I don't know what to write. Anything I can say about this film wont do it justice It IS A MUST SEE movie especially before its remake comes out in January! This move is once of the best movies I have ever seen! 1. I hate foreign films 2. I hate having to read a film But this film pulls you in from the moment you press PLAY!!!! And once it sucks you in it does not spit you out until you reach its climatic finish in the final chapter! The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire & The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest are fantastic films. All I can say is give them a chance to suck you in. I promise you wont be sorry but make sure you watch them with an open mind because even though this film is GRAPHIC in nature all reveals itself in the finale.

Ugly minded people, ugly behavior most of which is incidental and does not need blatant depiction for a movie. The script writer / director has no idea of the difference in impact of images to the written word and the ability of the viewers mind to auto-extrapolate. Avoid this movie and just read the book.

Not a rivetting film, but dramatic suspensful, yet confronting but contextual scenes of a sexuall deviant nature. The films protaganist is damaged emotionally and her spectrum disorder is a gift that allows an insight that results in cracking a long undisclosed series of events that was thought (wrogly) to b a murder.

I read each of these books almost as soon as they hit the shelves (the first was a fluke!). I usually find the movie less enjoyable than the book (if I've read it), but held out hope that i would enjoy this. I was wrong. There was a lot of violence, and for some reason this was ok for me to read and vision myself, but I found it much more difficult to watch on the screen.

While confronting in places this movie has a stark reality like quality that can't help but move you. The plot interweaves the story of the sleuth’s lives and their investigations with ease and style. These 3 films (trilogy) are better approached and enjoyed after reading the 3 books (in english or swedish if you are lucky to be scandinavian). The books give many details that are not explained/obvious in the films... After reading , the thread is easier to follow because action is very rapid, we could be missing a few pieces of the puzzle. the subtitles require us to watch the films at least twice each time, to recap the situation. iI have been in Stockholm many years back for a holiday and seeing places over the films made me appreciate my trip even more. this is a modern version of Ingmar Bergman views of the swedish society, in my opinion.

OMG, this is an excellent murder mystery thriller but there are some scenes that I could not watch and got my husband to fast-forward through them, it is definitely NOT for the fainthearted! There are some truly sick, depraved characters in this movie, but those scenes are thankfully alleviated by a compelling murder mystery. I warmed to the main characters, both vastly different, who pair up both professionally, then personally. Lisbeth is a deeply traumatised and troubled character, a very tough chick with balls, who gradually appears more communicative and less scary-looking as her relationship with Mikael progresses through the movie.

What a refreshing sight to see a European crime thriller reach the big time. The film embodied a sense of realism, that in my mind no Hollywood blockbuster has yet of muster of late. The characters are truly believable and their interesting personal histories are released subtly throughout the film. The viewer is witness to the harsh fine grain reality of their lives throughout the cleverly unfolding plot. Not having read the book, it was a terrific watch.

Amazing, complex story filmed to showcase the depth of the its characters. Very graphic, ugly and confronting elements which shock in many ways. Strong actors make this a 'real' interpretation of the book. This film confirms why the author intended to name his work differently. Disturbing insights into the twisted minds of people who try to create their own twisted world. The two protagonists were excellently interpreted.

A movie that does everything right; involving, intriguing and capturing the essence of the book. Obviously the story from the book is condensed and changed, but all the essentials are there. The only thing to criticise is the Australian scene: sheep in what looks like a Central Australian gorge? Doesn't happen. But it was probably filmed in Spain, as there's no mention of an Australian filming location.

Not sure why people have so much trouble with subtitles..some of the best scenes are when you can hear the genuine emotion in the native tongue of the director easy enough to pick up the plot throughout..very dramatic movie with one hell of a twist at every turn right to the end..Great acting great story great drama and some very poignant if not disturbing scenes..ourstanding foreign filmaking at it's finest..Worth a look!!!

Yes it's a murder mystery and has some violent sex scenes but it is an excellently crafted film. The film is not rushed, you don't even notice it's 147 mins, it just gets on with telling the story. Full of intriguing twists and turns. Great acting from what seem like down to earth people and not hollywood stars. I agree with other members' reviews about it being difficult to view and read subtitles, (thank goodness for the pause button). Like other members I can't wait for the other two films in the trilogy.

I was very glad I'd read the book as some of the plot lines were not very well explained. Still thought it was an excellent attempt at filming this amazingly popular thriller. Lisbeth Salander was subperbly well portrayed. Why is everyone so worried about subtitles?

Great movie! Breaths life back into crim fiction genre. It’s a bit sad state when people can't enjoy a movie with subtitles. Is it really that hard to read and watch the TV at the same time?

Sorry to say the subtitles got the better of me - gave up about a 1/4 into the movie and sent it back. Luckily I had read the book beforehand, so I knew the outcome of the movie ... will wait until an English version is filmed then try watching again. Would be great to advise on the website that this is in subtitles, though, just as a warning to viewers.

Swedish film with subtitles. Good story line. Suspense filled drama. Very strong sex and rape scenes. I think it should be classified as R-Restricted for over 18.

This was an intriguing movie, but not for the faint-hearted. Some very gruesome and graphic parts to this movie. But loved the twists and turns in the storyline.

The subtitles were a surprise, but didn't distract too much from the action. Excellent thriller - gritty but touching with the "victim" becoming the victor in the end!

I read the book - this film follows the story very well considering they have to fit so much in 2 hours. Well acted by well chosen actors for the lead parts.

Saw this at the movies. Subtitles, you have to watch & listen carefully but well worth the effort.Heavy sex scenes and violence, but acceptable in the context of the story which is excellent full of twists & turns. Sound acting and quality direction. Ist of a trilogy looking forward to the others.

Perhaps we watched this a bit to close to completing the books, but some of the unnecessary variations in the story line grated, especially omitting the whole Berger/Blomqvist subplot. Michael Nygvist is just not charismatic enough for the role and Berger is not hot enough. Salander, however, was perfect and the movie was worth seeing for this riveting portrayal alone. And for the record, why get out a foreign film if you don't like subtitles?

Fantastic - true to the book although lots left out, but characters pretty accurate EXCEPT the Reporter, not the best choice. He is too floppy and doesn't show the dynanism of the book character. Nevertheless, loved the girl, such spunk and independence, a great role model. Swedish men leave a lot to be desired ... good example .. the author of this trilogy died intestate and his partner of 30 years did not get a thing. All went to the father and brother who it seems contributed nothing and gained everything.

Read the books first and was completely sucked in (still thinking of Lisbeth's character, what a tough cookie) and the movie did NOT disappoint. The actors are exactly as I pictured them, and the fact it was in Swedish made it all the more authentic to the original script. Love it and can't wait to see the next two installments, they can't get here quick enough. Only disappointment is that Stig Larrson died before he could see how fantastic his vision could be on screen...

I actually saw the sequel "The girl who played with fire" before I saw this one at an advanced screening, but as I saw them in the same week, it was pretty easy to compare them. This was the better movie for mine, with more tension building and a mor einteresting story line. I like how the Swedes (and most Eurpoean films) don't have your typical Hollywood types in the lead roles; it makes for more believable viewing. Lots going on in this to keep you busy working it out, good drama and very good acting.

Utterly absorbing! This is a fantastic film. All the better for being shot in Sweden. Noomi Rapace is exactly as I pictured Lisbeth Salander although they have toned her down a bit. This is a rare thing - a film that is better than the book. Roll on books 2 and 3.
