This is the 2nd of the Millennium trilogy after "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". It is important to have seen the first movie as it uses the same characters, revealing some more of Salander's background. The plot is new but touches on the same underlying theme of men's mistreatment of women. There's hardly any male characters who treat women well, and this gets a bit tiresome, nevertheless this film delivers a slick thriller with an intricate plot.
It helped to have read the three books - it is remarkable how they could fit this epic story in to two hours. A pity the sub titles were so small but the action was about as I remembered from the books.
A simplified version of the book, but still gripping, tense and with something to say. Direction is unobtrusive and workmanlike, but Noomi Rapace has brought to life an unforgettable character - and she does it without the pathos of the character's US incarnation.
I think this is solid cinema. I am not hugely excited about it, but I think its solid (appropriately well made) cinema. Noomi Rapace does the job and so does MIchael Nyqvist. The Daniel Craig effort was more glamourous but these movies tell the story. 3.5/5
Subtitles are very small, dosn't let you keep the pace with movie.
carries on from the first movie very well
Excellent although subtitles were sometimes difficult to read. Stays faithful to the book and much darker than the Hollywood version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Definitely a must see for fans of the book.
I really enjoyed the Dragon movies. People should watch them, despite the subtitles. If you are a confident reader of English, you will be able to follow the movie without being conscious of the fact that you don't understand what they are saying. Your brain adjusts quickly to reading instead of listening. Give it another shot! Like others, I feel there was too much hype surrounding these movies, but they have to do what sells! Looking forward to seeing the last of the trilogy.
the lead actress in the movie Noomi Rapace, is really very ugly in this movie and is an insult to all those busty n gorgeous Swedish women. Plz dont watch this unless u like ugly ducklings :(
After 10 minutes I realised that I had made a bad choice. Poorly put together with pathetic acting and equally pathetic script.
Emotional story. Great actors!
I didnt like this is was no where as good as the first in the series and I didnt even finish watching it
Riveting viewing and as good as the book.
was a good movie, only you had to read it.
Really fantastic and real - espescially if you have read the books. However, if you have not, you may miss a lot of whats going on. But well done to the Swedes's great movies, great tension -excellent portrayal of the books
This movie was a bit weird, interesting but if I had not read the book of The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo first I would have been even more confused about the characters and following the story and understanding who was who.
Great movie, just a fluke to play this one as second of three in series without reading that it was the second movie. Again subtitles. Couldn't wait to view it after the first movie.
Enough suspense and intrigue to keep you interested throughout. However, this could just have easily been a two part TV mini-series. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one in the series, but I can't really say why. I also agree with a few other people that the yellow subtitles were at times very hard to read against some backgrounds. On to the third one...............................
This was almost as good as the first. we get to know abit more about the main character and about her childhood. Not all of it made sense straight away but got there in the end. Pretty entertaining with some blood gory scenes.
did not like this movie could not watch it all
DANKA DANKA.. A MUST WATCH...
intense and graphic...not for the squeamish
I watched the first in the trilogy and I was a bit stunned by the violence in it;but I think it helps you undersstand the following second film, the girl who played with fire which I enjoyed watching
Excellent adaptation of the movie. Noomi Rapace is really suited to the role of Salander.
As good as the first one, but spoilt a bit by the weird ending.
Good representation of the book
loved this second part or the triolgy
If you do not mind subtitles and are a fast reader then the movie is quite good. Current movie track a bit back on the previous episode and is not really a new or continuing story.
I thought the first movie was somewhat better than this. What has saved it is some pretty good suspense, entertaining action and brilliantly artistic filming technique. The story line was a bit weak and (maybe it's just me) at this point I don't think that I could labour through another 2 hours of subtitles to see the third instalment, which I was looking forward to even after the first one. I think that is what has left me a bit cold - I feel that the native dialogue would have been brilliant, but it lost something in the translation. Also I think the sexual depravity was unnecessary - I don't think I am really a prude, but the sexual abuse theme was a bit over the top and could have been replaced with any number of intriguing alternatives (I'm not saying to completely remove sex, maybe a little less dark.).
This was the sequel to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. We preferred the Dragon Tattoo as the ending in the Girl who played with fire was not that great - it left you feeling - Well is that it? Perhaps another will be made to tie it all together.
Over all, it was pretty good and it was still worth watching.
The second installment of the Larsson trilogy did not disappoint. Lizbeth Salander’s past continues to unravel as she discovers more about her tainted and mysterious history, whilst she is confronted with new controversy and enemies in the present. Similar to that of the first installment, the films retains the luster of a Scandinavian foreign film, maintaining the level of ‘grotesqueness’ and violence you would expect from a physiological thriller, whilst retaining the pizzazz of a big budget mainstream film. In Isolation this film could possibly be difficult to comprehend, best watched after watching “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
Another dubbed movie but still an excellent story. Lead character of Salander was very strong. Can't wait until the last of the trilogy is on DVD
Loved it only prob was sub titles written in yellow this movie and makes reading hard. The next one and previous ones in white and great.
definitely as good as the other two movies in the trilogy.
Great movie, but it is a 'to be continued' not good unless you have the next one to watch straight away
Great follow-up to 'Dragon Tattoo'. Kept us on the edge of the seat all the way through. Found the yellow subtitles quite hard to read.
delivered... can't wait for the Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest
I have seen two of the trilogy now and believe they are both brilliant and true to the novels.
Couldn't concentrate on the movie as having to read subtitles all the time. BOY , I HATE SUBTITLE FILMS!!! I like to WATCH the movie NOT READ it. My fault maybe didn't read the info about movie well enough.
Great movie which stays true to the book. Highly recommended.
i found all 3 installments of this trilogy quite refreshing, albeit foreign still intrigueing, captivating, surprising with very interesting 'twists' throughout. I highly recommend this trilogy as recomended viewing. (try and watch in sequence for full effect of storyline)
Didnt watch it couldn't be bothered with subtitles
Contrary to most critics reviews, we thought this was a good movie. The character of Elizabeth Salander is amazing, she's one tough woman! I also like Mikael Blomkvist, I don't think he's boring, he's a nice guy. A good suspenseful thriller.
The plot was difficult to follow as it was very hard to read the subtitles which were in yellow writing and got lost against the background.
Good. Missed a fair bit of the book though. Not as good as The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo.
Very insteresting, better than the first one
As always another suspenseful story. Excellent.
great book, disjointed, subtitled movie
Good story, but the subtitles spoilt it for me.
Enthralling dark story. Really need to see "Girl With Dragon Tatoo" to appreciate this film.
Unbearable mayhem inflicted through one human lifetime is possible!
Just as good as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But see that one first. Especially if you haven't read any of the books.
I loved the first movie, but have since read the books, and I must say the second movie was underwhelming. It's not that the acting or the script or the pacing were bad, but that they weren't as engaging as the book. Took three sittings to get it finished; the books I couldn't put down!
Not as good as the first. Seemed to lack storyline and connection with the characters whereas the 1st one was very engaging. I suppose you have to see it though if you plan to see the 3rd in the series.
Great movies, cant wait to read the book.
I feel obliged to watch these films because I've read the books. Not a bad adaptation of the book but a good book always wins over a movie.
great movie. Subtitles a little hard to follow somtimes as they were in yello and lost in background..
As good as the first, which is a hard act to follow. The third one is eagerly anticipated.
Really enjoyed this movie even with subtitle, sticks very closely to the books. Can't wait to see the next....
Not as good as the first one, but still interesting.
loved the first one, second one was great too .. have heard a third is coming .. is one of those movies you have to remove all distractions from your viewing arena due to sub titles but well worth the watch. Some very explicit scenes though :-(
These guys know how to make a suspence/crime movie.
Loved the 1st movie, this was not a dissapointment
The first movie in this trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) was better but it is still a very good movie and I highly recommend seeing it. I don't understand why people don't watch movies when they are in a foreign language with subtitles. They are missing out on very good movies. It's just a matter of what you're used to. The only downside was that this one's subtitles had a very small font and it was difficult to read at times. I hope that the next one will have clearer subtitles in larger font.
This film is a sequel to "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". This film keeps us enthralled until the last moment, with the reporter saving "The Girl" from death inflicted by her cruel father. However, the rapid pace of the film you lose some of the storyline. A repeat viewing is a must!
Fantastic film version of the book. It is lovely to view a movie that sticks to the original storyline. Cannot wait for film no.3 . The english captions are not a problem, which verifies the closeness to the book. lOVE THEM
EXcellent. Intriguing storyline, good writing. Various twists in the story line.
Everything realistic.
The seccond movie in the series. Not as enjoyable as the first with several of the main characters in dispirate sections, however the links created are wonderful.
sub titles made it hard work. Book is better if you have to read the movie.
Fabulous. Didn't let the book down
OK
just too much hype..
nothing new.
a girl who is burried underground comes back..ha ha..very funny..
freak who does not have sense..
and a half burned father with some lesbian acts..
come on..
this is just an ordinary movie.
4/10
I read the Millennium books
i loved the speed and the suspense of all actions
i visited Stockholm in 1988 and it all came back, including the freezing cold weather in May, but i really enjoyed that place, and the people
worth visiting the Venice of the North.
The films are slightly shortcutting the book story, but once you've read the books, it is a good series to watch on big screen.
by reading you don't feel the atrocities of the story on screen so much
it is all mild compared to the books,
nevertheless very good to watch!
very disapointed that it was not in english
Didnt bother watching the subtitles were to annoying for me
not as good as the book but still not a bad flick. I dont think would be that great if you hadnt viewed the first moovie. Look forward to the next chapter.
Extraordinarily well acted by Noomi; it helps to have read the book first.
Very good. Not as good the first one (Girl with a dragon tattoo) - but definitely worth seeing. The subtitles and rapid scene changes mean you've got to pay attention to keep track of the detail in the story - but another great film and a great screen adaptation of a brilliant book.
Great Movie, loved the first, couldnt wait for the second , now cant wait for the third.
Subtitles not a problem, captured by the plot they never became invasive.
Very Good , but you should watch the girl with the dragon tattoo first , to many holes in this one if you don't . I don't understand a word of swedish but I find an occasional glance at the subtitles is all I need to follow this trilogy , perhaps it's body language or plot style , not sure , but the subtitles don't seem to intrude on the enjoyment of the film.
Outstanding movie. Plot, performances and direction superb. Never mind the subtitles. Can't wait for the last movie of the trilogy.
I'm certainly glad the film has subtitles - dubbing is just too awful for words(!) - right down there with colourising black and white films. The trilogy of books was by far my best read of 2010 - the film though lacks a lot of the edge of the first book (I understand the Swedish versions are available!!) and robs me of the pictures and characters I painted for myself in my imagination. In fact, the film 'flattens' what is an exciting book to read and makes it just an 'also ran'.
And, yes, Quickflix, please take up the cry to have films spoken in other than English marked as SUBTITLED - then I'll get those films more quickly since they won't first be delayed by an unappreciative audience.
Like Dragon Tattoo, this is a long movie but gripping right through. One of the most suspenseful movies I've ever seen. Can't wait for the third in the trilogy to come out.
Another good addition to the trilogy.
Must admit i was annoyed as it was obvious there were lines in the film that were not translated in the subtitles. Made me feel like parts of the plot were not detailed.
But still a great film.
Felt like I was watching a mediocre Friday night crime drama on TV. The books were overrated and the movies are orverrated adaptations of said books so what do you expect.
The movie wasn't as good as the book but then the movies never are. My husband hasn't read the books but thought the movie was great. I thought they left too much of the plot from the book out of the movie. It is well worth seeing but you may be disappointed.
Good movie but hard to get into if you have read the book
Even though you have to read sub titles the movie is very well done. Every bit as good as 'the girl with the Dragon tattoo'.
EXCELLENT FOLLOW UP TO DRAGON TATTOO,CAN'T WAIT FOR HORNET'S NEST.ACTION AND THRILLS ALL THE WAY.
I found this to be a disapointing film even though it was a good film. It did not live up to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The acting was a constant and teh story still held you but it just wasn't as good as the first one.
Amazing Instalment.
I loved it!
but not as goood as the first one :)
and hopefully as is told in the third movie.
i recommend watching this thrilling trilogy.
Without a doubt you have to have read the book to be able to understand anything that is going on in this film. I personally LOVED this 2nd installment as I've read all three books but I have friends that couldn't follow the plot on this one and they hadn't read the books. Noomi Rapace is absolutely spot on as Lisbeth - so withdrawn and awkward while Sweden as never looked so inviting a country to visit. Enthralling and dark, I can't wait for the final chapter.
Great, Love this one as much as the first, cant wait for the FINAL ACT!!!...
Loved the intrigue and suspense of the first dvd, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and absolutely enjoyed this one, and can't wait for the third in the trilogy, The Girl who kicked the Hornet's nest !
Agree with one member about the contrived picking up the gun and then leaving it with all her fingprints on it! However without that contrivance it would be hard for the plot/storyline to point at Lisbeth Salander as a suspect, so contrived it might be but necessary it is. Also agree with another member about the yellow small subtitles being hard to read but they hardly matter when it comes down to fabulous and gripping storyline and entertainment. Noomi Rapace is great she has absolutely nailed the character of Lisbeth Salander. A well crafted and thought out drama all round. Good viewing.
Haven't seen the 1st one yet- but I have read all the books. Pretty accurate. Very good
This movie is full of intrigue, at times brutal, and keeps you on the edge to the end. IT IS A MUST THAT YOU WATCH THE FIRST PART The Girl with the dragon Tattoo as this is the follow up. Fantastic
Never thought I'd enjoy a 2 hour Swedish movie but I clung on to the very end. Dark, intriguing and very engaging! Loved it!
A star down from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" but still an amazing, interesting and thrilling movie. Noomi Rapace superb.
I found the beginning a little hard to keep up with. It was disappointing that the 2 characters didn't meet up until the very end in rather disturbing scenes. I was on the edge of my seat. But, I wanted more at the end....I wasn't quite ready for it to finish.
The subtitles were a ridiculous colour. They were so difficult to read it parts of the movie (against a light coloured background). I found myself rewinding and going up closer to the tv to read them. And, from other reviews, other people thought the same. (Subtitles don't bother me - just when you can't read them due to poorly choiced colour and size is when it becomes an issue)
Very disappointing sequel (actually a TV series in Sweden) to the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. Confusing, unexciting and ridiculously far-fetched. The yellow sub-titles were very difficult to read. This may have worked better at the cinema.
Brilliant movie, equally as good as the first in the trilogy. We already know the main characters and some of the strands of the first story are continued and elaborated, yet it is a completely different story at heart, and a compelling one.
Not quite in the same league as the first film but still enjoyed it and was riveted until the end. Disappointed that the two main characters had so little direct interaction in this one. Sub-titles were definitely a terrible size and colour and difficult to read at times. Looking forward to the next installment.
Starts very slowly, I had no idea what was happening until I read the blurb on the DVD case. The subtitles were difficult to read, but that was due to font size and colour rather than the language itself.
Once it got going I enjoyed the film. It is well paced following the murders, and I enjoyed the twin stories of suspicion.
I enjoyed that it was in Swedish, as well as in Sweden. It's good to have local films telling local stories away from the Hollywoodisation of newly popular texts.
Saw this on the big screen in the same week I saw the first instalment on DVD. This sequel doesn' t match up the the drama of the first by a long stretch. We still enjoyed the non-Hollywood casting and understated acting, but things went a bit astray with the whole buried alive scene.
